New York: Bantam, 1979, contains several people who manipulate someone else within the story. The manipulative characters are Mr. K, the Martians, and Mr. Teece. In The Martian Chronicles, Mr. K manipulates his wife by using other Martians on planet Mars to kill the astronaut Mr. York, who comes from planet earth. Captain Black was confused of how much Mars looks exactly like Earth in the 1920’s. While the other astronauts thought they had gone the wrong direction, or ended up in a different dimension. One of the astronauts’, Lustig, finds it odd that Mars has his dead grandmother living and well, as if Mars was heaven. Lustig says to his crew that his grandparents have been dead for thirty years. When Hinkston asks if where they landed was heaven, or if they are dead as well. Lustig’s grandparents replies to Hinkston, “’Nonsense, no. It’s a world and we get a second Chance. . .’” (41). The Martians manipulate the astronauts by being emotionally manipulative, and pretending to be the earthlings dead family members. By bringing them to their old homes to kill the crew.
