DOWN LOW GLOW: Owner’s Manual

Way to Glow! You are holding the world’s first neon downlighting system for bicycles – now you can ride safely at night, while hovering on a cloud of neon light.

For more information about the Down Low Glow, to post your pictures or see the latest shots from other bikers, please keep in touch with us at www.fossilfool.com.

Section I. Contents of the Down Low Glow kit:

|[pic]fig 0. Complete contents of the Down Low Glow kit. |Your Down Low Glow kit contains: |
| |2 shockproof light tubes (1 1” tube and 1 ¾” tube.) |
| |1 power driver box with Velcro mount (power driver comes attached |
| |to the two light tubes) |
| |1 rechargeable NiMH battery, with integrated power switch |
| |Wall charger |
| |Full mounting kit, including: |
| |1 X-shaped plastic snap-in clip for the front light tube (with |
| |rubber straps attached) |
| |2 rubber blocks and Velcro cinch straps, for mounting the rear |
| |light tube |
| |1 TwoFish bike block for mounting the battery to your frame |
| |1 two-sided black Velcro cinch strap for routing the wires from |
| |both light tubes |

Section II. Installing the Down Low Glow.

Mounting the front light tube:

Your Down Low Glow downlighting kit comes with two light tubes, for the front and rear of your bicycle. The rear light tube is narrower than the front, to fit between your foot and the rear wheel.

The X-shaped black plastic clip creates a snap fit for the front light tube. Using the attached rubber straps, secure the clip against the frame. With nail clippers or a wire cutter, you can trim the excess for a neat look.

Note: Some racing bikes have a tight clearance between the front wheel and the frame. If this is the case with your bike, mount the snap-in plastic clip closer to the bottom bracket of the bike to allow for proper tire clearance.

Use the X-shaped rubber security strap to provide extra security to your front light tube.

Fig. 1. Mounting the snap-fit plastic clip for the front light tube. Pull the rubber straps around the frame tightly to ensure a slip-free fit, and take care to route the straps underneath any brake and derailleur cables.

Mounting the rear light:

[pic] [pic] figs. 2,3. Mounting the rear light tube to the chainstay (non-drive side). Pull the velcro strap tightly to ensure a snug fit on the chainstay.

The two small rubber blocks are for the rear light tube. To mount the rear light tube, use the rubber blocks as a cushion between the light tube and the frame. Then tighten the velcro straps with the integrated plastic ring. Take care to position the light tube directly underneath the chainstay, so that it does not interfere with the path of your heel or the rear wheel.

Mounting the power driver box:

The black plastic box connected to the light tubes is the power driver for the light tubes. It attaches to the seat tube of your frame with adhesive backed Velcro.
Important: Because the Down Low Glow is designed to fit a wide variety of bicycles, some bikes may have extra slack in the wires leading from this box to the light tubes. If installed improperly, these wires will hang in the way of your pedals or your front chainring, potentially getting caught when you pedal. Before sticking the adhesive velcro patch on your bike frame, pick a spot that minimizes the excess wire. However the wires should not be so under tension. Strain on the wires can lead to premature failure of the light tubes.

Once you have chosen a good spot for the black power driver box, peel back the paper on the Velcro rectangle and affix it to your seat tube. Take care to clean the frame beforehand with soap and water or alcohol.

fig. 4. Mounting the power driver box to your seat stay.

Mounting the battery

[pic] [pic] fig. 5,6. Mounting the battery. The TwoFish bike block stays on your frame, even when you bring the battery inside to charge it.

Your Down Low Glow kit comes with a high quality Twofish Bike Block to snugly mount the rechargeable battery to your frame. The TwoFish Bike Block uses a directional Velcro strap and buckle that allows you to use a pulley action to cinch the battery to your frame. Read these instructions first, and you’ll get a snug mount for your battery, every time.

Step 1. Open the Velcro strap completely. Position the rubber block on your seat tube. Loop the strap around the frame, through the plastic buckle and back to itself. When done properly the Velcro will stick to itself. If the Velcro does not stick to itself at this point, flip the strap around and try again. This part stays on your bike semi-permanently, even when you bring your battery inside to recharge.

2. Now place the battery with the switch side closest to your frame, in the other side of the Bike Block’s rubber block.

3. Loop the velcro strap once again through the other side of the black plastic D-Ring, and secure it to itself.

fig. 7. This diagram shows how the Twofish Bike Block works to snugly hold your battery in place. More information about Twofish products can be found at http://www.twofish.biz/

[pic] fig.8. Ready to glow!

Section III. Rolling with the Down Low Glow.

With both light tubes, black driver box, and battery securely mounted to your bike frame, connect the round power connecter from the battery to its male counterpart from the driver box. When you’re ready to glow, flip the switch to ON. Your Down Low Glow will last about 2.5 hours before you need to recharge the battery. Running the light intermittently (instead of in a single block of time) will help the glow last longer. When the begin to dim, the lights still provide excellent front and side visibility. However, after about three hours, the lights will fade to a very dim glow and are no longer adequate for safety. Time to recharge!

Recharging the battery

Undo the velcro strap of the TwoFish Bike Block, remove the battery, and take it to your wall charger. Connect the battery to the charger and turn the switch to the ON position.

Important: You must keep the power switch in the ON position to charge your battery. If the switch is in the OFF position, your battery will not recharge.

Your battery will recharge in 8-12 hours, depending on how completely you have drained it. The Down Low Glow comes with a NiMH battery, which means there is no ‘memory’ effect. You can recharge your battery after a partial or full cycle of use. After 12 hours, or when the battery is warm to the touch, disconnect the battery from the charger, or turn the power switch on the battery to OFF.

Handling the battery:
[pic]
fig. 9. Always hold the battery by the body, not by the cord! The same goes for the tubes. Do not hold the light tubes by the cord, but by the tubes themselves.

Section IV. Common Questions:

Can I ride in wet conditions?
The Down Low Glow is designed to be water-resistant through light rain and puddles. However, if your night rides take you through sustained downpours, you must take steps to protect the battery and power driver against water penetration. Consider wrapping the driver box and battery with Ziplock bags.

Is the Down Low Glow bright enough for city riding?

In urban riding, the Down Low Glow provides superior front and side visibility, and ample rear visibility, to ensure cars will see you from all angles. If you ride underneath street lights, you should not need any additional light. If you ride beyond street lights, you may wish to consider getting a bright LED front light for additional light, such as Planet Bike’s Dual Spot or Spot 3.

Is the Down Low Glow bright enough for trail riding?

The Down Low Glow will enhance any night ride, especially an off-road ride. However, on its own, the downward facing light of the Down Low Glow is not sufficient to illuminate the trail ahead for safe trail riding. Make sure you also use a high powered front headlight, such as Light and Motion.

Do I need to clean my Down Low Glow light tubes?

If road grime accumulates on the light tubes, wipe them down with a soft cloth and some dish soap. The Down Low Glow tubes scratch easily, so avoid scratching or scouring your light tubes.

Can I recharge my battery, even if I have not fully drained it?

You can recharge your battery after a partial or full cycle of use. The Down Low Glow comes with a NiMH battery, which means there is no ‘memory’ effect.

How will I know if my battery is fully charged?

The battery will be slightly warm to to the touch.

Is it possible to overcharge my battery?

Yes. Leaving your battery on the charger for days on end will eventually shorten its working life. Disconnect your battery when it is warm to the touch, or after 12 hours, whichever comes first.

I just charged my battery for 12 hours like you said, but the lights look like they’re still running on an empty battery. Do I have a dead battery?
NO. Most likely, your battery is fine, but is probably still empty. How come? You may have not flipped the switch to ON before charging. If the power switch on the battery is in the OFF position, no charging will happen. Check to make sure the switch on the battery is in the ON position while charging.

What should I do with my battery after it has lived its full life and served me well for 500-1000 charge cycles?
Great question! Please do not toss the rechargeable battery pack in the trash. Bring it instead to a battery recycling center so that it can be properly disposed of or recycled. In many parts of the country, this is as simple as stopping by your local Safeway, Walgreens, Kragen, etc… Tossing batteries (rechargeable or alkaline) in the trash causes a potential heavy metal contamination of local ground water, and can destroy the habitat of local fish and other species. Even though NiMH batteries are considered environmentally safer than NiCad or lead acid, they still pose a risk. So do the responsible thing, and bring it to a battery recycling center.

Replacement batteries for the Down Low Glow are always available at www.fossilfool.com .

Who do I call if my lights break or don’t work?

Please call 415-810-DOWN (3696), or email techinfo@fossilfool.com. In most cases (depending on circumstances of breakage) we will ship you replacement parts at little or no cost to you.b

...does the light on this day affect the shadows in the photograph? On an overcast day, you are already in a large shadow of the cloud cover, so the light is non-directional, diffused and soft. There are no sharp shadows. This can be a great light for portraits. 2. Define and describe “Depth of Field”? Depth of Field is the range of distance that remains in focus in a photograph. The smaller the aperture size, the larger the range from near to far will be in sharp focus. If viewing a large depth of field, images in the foreground middle and background will all be in sharp focus. 3. Define and describe “Aperture”. The aperture refers to the size of the lens opening in a camera. The aperture controls the amount of light that reaches the sensor or the film. The aperture size is represented by f stops on a camera. The higher the number of the f stop- the smaller the opening. Aperture and shutter speed combined are referred to as the “exposure”. 4. Define and describe “Shutter Speed”. Shutter speed is the length of time the shutter on the camera stays open to emit light. Shutter speed is measured in “stops”. Each full stop is half (or double) the speed of next. The faster the shutter speed the sharper a moving object will appear in a photo. By contrast, the slower the shutter speed, the more movement will be captured. 5. Define and describe “White Balance”. White balance is the function of the camera that allows for the adjustment to match the different colors of light to their light...

The Pros And Cons Of Hoverboards

...customers instructing them on how to use their hoverboard – or worst, asking them to discard it in return for a full refund. They also temporarily removed their Hoverboard inventory from their store as a precautionary measure. So what is making this uber toy catch fire? Experts seem to have boiled it down. The gist of the problem was apparently the lithium batteries catching fire. Now, under normal circumstances, this rarely happens, to genuine Hoverboards made by reputable manufacturers. But evidence shows that the mobility vehicles catching fire used cheaper, imitation parts in its charger, circuitry and batteries. Almost 100% of hoverboards that caught fire, were in fact, pale imitations of original hoverboards - all made in China. In light of this alarming situation, here is a quick write-up that will show you how to spot a fake hoverboard. - Is the name spelt correctly? You will often find fake hoverboards, usually those coming from China have the name intentionally misspelled. For example, a popular Hoverboard brand like Swegway will have an imitation called Smagway. This is done intentionally for legal reasons, but it is a dead-giveaway that it is an imitation and, therefore, must be avoided. They can be an exact replica of the original, and hard to tell by just looking at them. But inside, they use inferior materials. - Are they too cheap? Hoverboards are not the cheapest of gizmos. They are in fact very pricey. A good hoverboard will cost you, at least, $300...

Maybe, the features and quality of product are not changed greatly but the customers cannot use the new product as easy as before so they have to change their behaviors dramatically. To give an example about this category, in past years, all types of cars were produced as manual gearbox. First automatic gearbox cars were produced in 1958. When we look at the changing of the gearbox, we cannot see major differences between both manual and automatic gearbox cars but the usage of these cars are different from each other. There are a lot of people who use automatic gearbox cars but cannot use manuals or just the opposite. To get used to automatic gearbox cars, people have to change their behavior dramatically. For instance, there is no clutch lever at automatic gearbox cars. Although, there is a significant innovation, many people do not prefer automatic gearbox cars because they believe that this types of cars are not worked full effectively if their engine is not strong. Also, driving pleasure of manual is more pleasant than automatics’ for many manual gearbox car users. They believe that, their own cars create more value for them. Because of different reasons and personal desires, innovators’ and customers’ thoughts can be differ in terms of different aspects.
