Marble Challenge

1) Identify the Problem- The marble has to travel for twenty-five seconds or greater.

2) Gather Information- If we use cardboard, it will slow down the time but by using the folder, it will increase the time the marble travels.

3) Generate Possible Solutions- By testing different possible designs, we can generate a solution as to how the marble will travel for the twenty-five seconds.

4) Select the best Solution- We had two main solutions and tested both of them. One was a zig-zag structure but as we tested it, the cardboard became too flimsy and our second structure was to build the zig-zag in a base that would support it, and that was our end product because we knew we had found our perfect structure.

5) Implement Selected Solution- (Turned in)

6) Evaluate- As we tested our structure, we came to conclusion that the marble only traveled 17 seconds but our design was successful in my opinion because the marble had potential to go the full 25 or even longer with a few tweaks. It could’ve ended differently but unfortunately, we did not solve the problem.

A) The positives I took away from this project were that our design actually worked the way we planned. Through the building process and testing it, everything came out the way we hoped and although the marble didn’t travel the full twenty-five seconds, we were successful and positive on the design and structure.

B) The negatives I took away from this project were that the marble didn’t travel the full twenty-five seconds. We wasted the first 2 work days testing one possible structure that failed and luckily, we were able to bounce back with our back up plan and finish our project on time. We failed on the time, we failed on our fist idea, we had failures but we had positives to correct those and that’s why we made it by the deadline.

C) Identifying the problem is definitely the one process we didn’t spend enough time on. I feel like we could’ve had a way different outcome if we would’ve actually took the time to execute the process instead of jumping the gun and because of this, the marble didn’t travel the full twenty-five seconds. By skipping this step, it left us with many difficulties that resulted on us failing the time frame that the marble was supposed to travel.

D) We had many challenges during the construction. We used the first couple work days building a failing structure that we didn’t realize until we had it all ready to be built. Saying that, we were left with only 3 days to start over with our back up plan and try to execute the design and structure. We changed everything and started over again and this time, we were able to make our project work and travel the marble even though it didn’t make the time requirement. By making a stable base, we were successful the second time through.

E) If we were given more time, I would’ve made a more complex design and structure so that the marble could’ve traveled longer than twenty-five seconds. Time is key when it comes to this project and better yet, the design is what makes this whole project. If your design isn’t there, then you don’t have a project. I would’ve added more features to make it look more unique and travel the marble in fashion. There are many things I would have done if time was a variable.

F) If we were given a second opportunity to attempt this project again, something I would do differently is use all of my space that wasn’t used the first time. All the empty space that wasn’t used could’ve added more time the marble traveled. Another thing I would do differently is add more features so that it looked presentable. I would use all the time given to me appropriately and not rush right into building and constructing it. There are many things I would’ve done differently if we were given another time through.

G) I learned time, resources, and design are key to a successful project. In this class or any other class or even out of school, I learned that I need to stop taking advantage of all those. I learned to have a successful project that I need to work harder than I did and use all the resources that are available to me. There are many things I can take away from this project and learn from so next time I know what to do right and not wrong.

Count Solution

...Extra Counting Practice 1. A fair coin is tossed 10 times. (i) Find the probability of getting exactly three heads. (ii) Find the probability of getting 3 or fewer heads. SOLUTION: We set it up by counting how many things are in the sample space, then count how many ways of getting the three heads. For each of the 10 coin tosses, we have either a head (H) or a tail (T). Therefore, there are 210 strings in the sample space (and each is equally likely). To count how many ways we get exactly three heads, we might think about the number of ways of selecting three out of 10 slots- Those we will take to be the H, the rest will be T. This is 10 . Overall, 3 10 3 210 ≈ 0.117 From this, the solution to part (ii) will be: 10 10 10 10 + + + 3 2 1 0 210 ≈ 0.17 2. A class consists of 15 boys and 30 girls. Ten students are selected at random for a special committee. Find the probability that exactly three boys are selected. SOLUTION: First, how many “objects” are in the sample space? We are choosing 10 students from the 45, so: 45 . 10 Now we need three boys, and the number of ways of selecting them will be 15 3 . If we could not tell the girls apart, we’d be done- But of course we can choose them apart. Therefore, we also need to account for the number of ways we can put 7 girls on the committee, which is 30 . 7 Altogether: 15 3 30 7 45 10 ≈ 0.29 3. We will deal all the cards of a standard deck (52 cards) to 4 players (so...

...Thesis: The challenges of being a single parent include managing finances, responsibilities and resources The challenge of being a single parent has become harder over time. The fact is that over time things have changed but not for a single parent. Statics show that there has been a steady rise for five decades and that the births to unmarried women has crossed a threshold. An example of this would be, a single mom that can’t provide day care for her child because her income is not enough to pay the bills and day care. The challenges of being a single parent include, managing finances, responsibilities and resources, their work is never done nor are their struggles. One of the challenges a single mom has raising her son and daughter would be getting up at 4am taking 3 buses to transport her children to her mother (who lives on the other side of town). Spending 2 hours getting there and another 3 buses and a hour and a half getting to work. There is a limit on everything she does because she does not have the opportunity to get an education, she has to work and provide for her family. Pawning valuables to make ends meet when money is short, living from pay check to pay check. Child support is another challenge for a single mom when the children’s father does not work, all the financial responsibility is on the single parent. Another challenge to a single mom is that because she is a woman, to keep from being taken advantage of, she will pay more money for rent to keep...

Workplace Difficulties

...Women face greater challenges at the workplace. Do you agree or disagree? Write an essay, giving reasons to support your viewpoint. A photograph recently caught my attention. It was a mother carrying her 18 month old daughter in one hand and a document in the other. What’s special about it? She is a member of the European Parliament, Licia Ronzulli, and this photograph was taken when she was addressing the parliament. This epitomizes modern motherhood, and takes multitasking to new dimensions. Just stringing together the two words “women” and “workplace” automatically conjures the third word in our mind- “Challenge”. But as work places are constantly evolving, what one perceives as a challenge is indeed changing. A few decades ago nurse , receptionist or secretary was all a working woman could aspire to be. Any woman who dreamed beyond was ridiculed and her integrity was questioned. Corporates viewed women as weaker and less committed than male counterparts. “Lady Candidates Need Not Apply”- was the common last line in job advertisements. Those 5 words in a ‘TELCO’ advertisement sparked Sudha Murthy to send the famous postcard to JRD Tata in 1974 saying “I am surprised how a company such as Telco is discriminating on the basis of gender”. When I first walked through TML factory, I wondered how Sudha would have felt 37 years before, knowing that hers were the first feminine footsteps there. Did she possibly know then that she had taken a giant leap for her kind in TELCO...
