Students who attend college come from various backgrounds. Higher Education professionals have the important responsibility of ensuring that we are providing an environment that is welcoming and inclusive of all students. Racial insensitivity and white privilege are currently the issues that Mallory College is facing. Minority students only make up 19% of the population at Mallory College; therefore, with the lack of diversity at the college it is inevitable to have underlying racial issues. In addition to these issues, students from other racial ethnicities may find it difficult to find their identity. According to Evans, Fornye, Guido, Patton and Renn (2010), individuals how exhibit dominant behavior, rarely admit it, and will not recognize the contradictions between their actions and beliefs (p. 262). It is apparent that from his excuses, that Marc views nothing wrong with his statements. It is important for me to recognize the fact that Marc may not have encountered many individuals from different races. As a result, Marc does not understand nor is he concern with the effects of his actions. These conversations can initiate from my office, however they also should be reflected in the values and belief of the college. Utilizing Chavez, Guido-DiBrito, and Mallory Diversity Development Model (2003), I will host monthly events that will highlight various cultures and ethnicities. These multi culture events will allow students to view these ethnicities in a different light and also learn to value their accomplishments (Evans et al., 2010, p. 24).
