...Band in most schools, is made up of students stereotyped as “band geeks/nerds”. When in reality, band is composed of students who have a love and expressive passion for music. Marching band on the other hand, is a part of band, usually found in high school, that incorporates music and visuals into one extremely vigorous sport. It is a genuinely important part of high school, because not only can give you great looking calf muscles and exercise, but it can also help you multitask and build leadership skills. Although it may require great deal of hard work and practice, the fun that comes with marching band makes all that work worth it. For example, during marching season the whole band develops into one enormous family, and in this family, we go on trips together, we go to games together, and we enjoy every bit of it....

...All of us a part of folk groups throughout even though we may not realize it at first. A folk group is a type of group, which shares a least one common element or folklore between them. For this assignment, I will be discussing about the folklore of two folk groups that were a part of my life, my high school marching band and drumline. I believe that marching bands as well as drumlines are folk groups because they share informal knowledge, customs, gestures, and traditions passed down by the band members only and not by the band instructors. For example, one of the informal traditions my high school marching band does is when we put pieces of grass from the school’s stadium inside our left shoe right before the tournament begins. The reason...

...I began high school band in 8th grade. I had played flute for about four years, but it was quite a change for a musician who could barely read rhythms at a 6th grade level. While at first I had thought they would put me with the other flute players because that is what I had known for the last three years, but they did the complete opposite! For the 2014-2015 marching season, I was in Ledford Marching band’s front ensemble. The front ensemble was filled with the most ridiculously talented people. There were people who had played percussion for over eight years, there were people would later go to audition for all-state, and people who marched for national drum corps! I learned many rules my 8th grade year being in the front ensemble. The first thing that I learned was: you’re never alone. Dalton Craven taught me this rule when I was supposed to bring in seven percussion items outside by myself. While you’re...

...When people usually hear the word “band” they probably think of a certain artist or group of artists that they like, but marching band rarely comes into anyones mind.Well, what exactly is marching band,? It is a large group of musicians playing and competing while entertaining in competitions. Marching band isn’t just about getting on the field and playing a few notes and then you're done. It teaches young teens many life lessons that they will carry with them through out their adult life. Band has taught me discipline, respect, and determination. Discipline is an extremely hard thing to learn especially if you're young and stubborn but it’s one of the biggest things that make a good band a great band. Every member of a band has to have...

...“Detail Atten-hut!” “Creek!” This is something I’ve been shouting for three years now. Marching band is the one place where I can freely shout as loud as I can. I have to. If you are not loud enough, practice will not end until you are. The marching band has been something so incredibly important to my life, I can’t imagine what it will be like when I’m done with college. What am I going to do with myself when I don’t have friends to go see? When I don’t have a horrid and hot two and a half hour practice to attend? Or when I don’t have to wake up and almost cry because my summer is over and a two-week long band boot camp is beginning in an hour? And why the heck am I so upset about not having to undergo this pain again? It is because of the one thing I get hyped about after the practices and soreness is over. The friendships and the love and fun. Even though the season is the same every year, with the same competitions and high schools and the same twenty or so competitors at each one, the people you...

...Marching band has given me a lot over the past three years. I became more socially and physically involved with school and fine arts, and I learned that I’m happiest when I’m surrounded in a musical setting. I care for our band program, and I want to leave my senior year with as much commitment as I can give. This past year, as I improved not only as a player, but a marcher as well, I began to expand my leadership outward in my section and in the ensemble. For example, when I noticed a problem within forms or fundamentals, I would take initiative to point them out and attempt to find a solution. If I could see a line was curved in front of me, or that a new marcher was struggling with keeping in time, I would try to fix it. If a member might...

...States, modern marching bands are most commonly associated with performing during American football games. Many American universities had bands before the twentieth century typically associated with military ROTC programs. In 1907, breaking from traditional rank and file marching, the first pictorial formation on a football field was produced as a "Block P" created by Paul Spotts Emrick, director of the Purdue All-American Marching Band. Spotts had seen a flock of birds fly in a "V" formation and decided that a band could replicate the action in the form of show formations on a field. The first halftime show at an American football game was performed by the University of Illinois Marching Illini also in 1907 at a game...

...Before I earned the drum major position, I had fallen in love with my marching band. The big hits that made the crowd roar, the lush, tender moments, and everything in-between made my experience transcendental. In addition, I practiced, sweated, and improved alongside friends that have become my family. I auditioned for the drum major position this year to put myself in the position to set that passion to work for the band’s improvement. However, as the competition season drew closer, I could see that the band was not where it needed to be. My initial solution was to identify and solve individual issues. I watched for sloppy marching and made sure we drilled that technique more. Mistakes in music were corrected by leading sectionals. I decided to count aloud when marching to solidify the count structure. Week after...

...just gotten on my nicely pressed marching band uniform. The whole band was getting ready for the second performance of the year. I slowly zipped up my jacket to ensure it didn't get stuck and then went to get my gloves and hat. Up to this day I had liked marching band. I liked the whole idea about how you had to look a certain way, act a certain way and play a certain way. That was all about to change though. As the band walked over to our warm up area everyone was talking. Not about drama in school but the show and how not to mess it up. We got to the warm up area. All of the staff was there. The band warmed up like always and got yelled at like always by Mr. Skeffington. The...

...During marching band, I had never really been one to want to stand out. I always wanted to blend in with the rest of the flute section and make the formation look as perfect as possible; being quite shy my first two years of high school, I just wanted to play and go through the motions along with everyone else. I was afraid of the rest of my fellow flutes judging me, my ideas, and my playing skills, so I never stood out or spoke up. That is, until my junior year – I decided that I would try to step outside of my already very minimal comfort zone. This year, I signed up to play piccolo for this season’s show, since I had one lying around at home. Although, it was definitely a switch to get used to. After a few practices, my relationship with...

...I started marching band during my freshman year in high school. My first thoughts during my first practice were “this is too hard” and “this isn’t for me” but later in the year, I learned to enjoy it with every event I participated in. The Cedar Hill Longhorn Red Army Marching Band is a great organization that teaches a great number of skills useful for life to become successful in any situation such as teamwork, time management, and discipline. Teamwork: All aspects of a team is critical. Each part contributes. There is astounding fulfillment in coming together with a team, buckling down with a group, to perform a show. What's more, the cooperation is altogether different from that of a sports team, where the objective is to defeat rivals...

...Throughout my life, I try to completely enrich myself in all aspects. These have all affected my personal character and qualities and have made me the person I am today. A very important extra-curricular of mine is marching band, in which I play the tenor saxophone. Additionally, I am the uniform captain, which means I am in charge of sizing everyone for their uniforms, distributing them, and ensuring they are all handled correctly. During marching season, I spend on average around 30 hours a week in practice, competitions, and football games. Marching band has taught me the important qualities of teamwork, cooperation, and creativity. Additionally, marching band has allowed me to meet so many new people and make new friends. I have definitely become much more outgoing and convivial through participating in this activity....

...I first joined band in 5th grade as a trumpet player at Chapel Hill Elementary School. At the end of my first year, I recieved the award for Most Outstanding in Band, and had participated in district honor band. After two more years of successful trumpet playing, Mrs. Brown asked if any trumpet players would like to play the French Horn. It was at this point with my competitive attitude and love for a challengethat I expressed my intrest of playing a new instrument to her. Once 8th grade started, I quickly adapted to playing the new and more challenging instrument. I persuaded my mom to allow me to join the Southwest Dekalb High School marching band. After a 2 weeks of practice, I performed in my first game as a trumpet player against Pebblebrook High School. After this game, I was approached by Kelley Walker...

...When I was an 8th grader, I was blessed to be apart of the high school marching band. I remember back then, band camp used to be all day and we’d stay and eat lunch at the school instead of leaving and coming back. After lunch, Mr. Fisher would play videos of these professional marching bands. They were part of an organization called Drum Corps International. It’s like the NFL for marching band kids. The first show we watched was “Spartacus,” performed by Phantom Regiment. At the end of the show, the drum major is slayed and the rest of the show continues without the drum major. This was a big deal within the marching community. I didn't know it at the time, but by watching that one show, my life would forever be changed. Fast forward to Sophomore year and I made the decision I was going to march the following summer. Granted, my parents hadn’t necessarily said yes to me leaving for 3 months and living on a bus for the entire summer, but they did say I could leave for a weekend and see what it was all about. The first corps I auditioned for was Legends. They’re an open class corps based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Auditions went well; I made friends, got a callback, was able to keep up with all the audition pieces, but something just didn’t feel right. They didn’t feel like home....
