Hawaii is a paradise known for it’s elegance, beauty, “aloha spirit,” and gracious welcoming culture. Recently, a symbol that embraces these revered qualities of the 50th state emerged to represent the people of Hawaii. That is the number “8,” worn by Tennessee Titans quarterback and O’ahu native, Marcus Mariota. Not only does Marcus hold the esteemed title of starting professional quarterback and athlete, but more importantly, for many, he represents a symbol of hope and great character. I believe he impacts young athletes as he consistently displays a disciplined and determined work ethic in athletics and in personal character beyond compare, something he attributes to his modest upbringing.
Marcus Mariota was born and raised on the island of O’ahu. He grew up in a town called Hawaii Kai and played for the Pop Warner team, Kalani Falcons. All these people were there to celebrate the success of one individual, someone who didn’t want to be treated differently than anyone else. Marcus was truly happy to just be in the company of those who loved and supported him. It was a comfortable atmosphere with casual decorations and settings, where local favorite foods filled the food line. It was similar to a graduation party celebration, except this time we were celebrating Marcus’ success and letting him go once again. The televisions were on and the cameras were rolling. But the room went silent as Marcus’ phone rang. It was as if the earth stood still. Anticipating the moment we all got up and started cheering. Uncle Toa turned up the volume and we heard over the speakers, “the second pick overall, drafted to Tennessee Titans is Marcus Mariota!” The room exploded with joyful noise; everyone living up this moment that would become a memory never to be
