...Marcus Garvey Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr.,Order Of National Hero(ONH) (17 August 1887 – 10 June 1940) was a Jamaican publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator who was a staunch proponent of the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements, to which end he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL). He founded the Black Star Line, part of the Back-to-Africa movement, which promoted the return of the African Diaspora to their ancestral lands. Prior to the twentieth century, leaders such as Prince Hall, Martin Delany, Edward Wilmot Blyden, and Henry Highland Garnet advocated the involvement of the African Diaspora in African affairs. Garvey was unique in advancing a Pan-African philosophy to inspire a global mass movement and economic empowerment focusing on Africa known as Garveyism. Promoted by the UNIA as a movement of African Redemption, Garveyism would eventually inspire others, ranging from the Nation of Islam to the Rastafari movement (which proclaims Garvey as a prophet). The intent of the movement was for those of African ancestry to "redeem" Africa and for the European colonial powers to leave it. His essential ideas about Africa were stated in an editorial in the Negro World titled “African Fundamentalism” where he wrote: “ Our union must know no clime, boundary, or nationality… to let us hold together under all climes and in every country… ” Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr. was born in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica...

...Marcus Garvey created the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) as a small body in Jamaica. By his philosophy of promoting racial pride and developing black-owned and operated enterprises, Garvey was able to secure the popular support that eventually made his movement so grand. Garvey used mobilization, communication, and identity-forming to create largest black mass movement in history. In the end, however, the size and potential power of the Garvey movement inspired both inside and outside actors to move against Garvey, culminating in its eventual decline. Garvey’s philosophy of promoting race pride and uniting all blacks depended on mobilization. This turned out to be one of his greatest skills. With his fiery oratory and public grandeur, Garvey became a larger-than-life figure. He was able to eventually captivate followers that numbered in the millions (Cedric Robinson, Black Movements in America, 121). Any downfalls of his businesses, and eventually the movement, were not for lack of followers. Literally thousands of people wanted to buy a piece of the Garvey machine. Additionally, Garvey distanced himself from such other black leaders as W.E.B. DuBois by criticizing DuBois’s desire to have a place among whites in American society (Birnbaum and Taylor, Civil Rights in America since 1787, 272). By polarizing the black population, Garvey was able to delineate the differentiation of the UNIA and galvanize his support. Furthermore, the prevalence of UNIA...

...Black Nationalism: UNIA The UNIA was a Black Nationalist movement led by Marcus Garvey. The movement made up a unique gender hierarchy and poor class membership that grew to extend all across the world’s geography. With the criticism of opponents, and the help of allies, the UNIA would come to stand as one of the most significant Black Nationalist movements. The UNIA maintained a hierarchal gender system that enforced female domesticity and male breadwinning. The female domesticity included caretaking and homemaking tasks, such as nursing and clothing production. One of the nursing programs, the Black Cross Nurses, “once a week learnt first aid and Medicare under the tutelage of a registered nurse who was a UNIA member (Lewis 68)”. For clothing production, women manufactured and designed various materials for the organization. Martin notes, “Women’s Manufacturing Department and Bazaar, which made Black Cross Nurses’ uniforms, Panama hats, and other millinery, shirts and ties” (Martin 34). Given the military culture of the UNIA, women also found themselves engaging in more soldierly activities. For instance, “Another uniformed auxiliary was the Motor Corps for females, both adult and teenage. These women met once a week to practice military drills as well as learn to drive” (Lewis 68). The gender structure of the UNIA was frequently met with criticism and examination through debate forums. Topics might include, “Is the intellect of woman as highly developed as that of man’s...

...The title says it all. “Can data breaches be prevented? Congress and companies answer: For now, no.” At a congressional hearing that took place Tuesday, February 4th through Wednesday, February 5th, executives from Target and Neiman Marcus reported that they are still in the dark as to how they could have better secured their consumers from cybercriminals. The breaches to the two industry titans occurred between July and October of 2013 for Neiman Marcus, who logged some 1.1 million customers whose payment card and personal information were hacked, and between Thanksgiving and December 8th of last year for Target, where payment card information of over 40 million customers and the personal contact information of some 70 million people was compromised. These recent hackings “compromised the privacy and security of millions of consumers… (and the ensuing) erosion of consumers’ confidence, with data breaches on the rise affecting retailers, Internet companies and others, could hinder the U.S. economy’s recovery,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the chairman of the panel of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing testimony from the Target and Neiman Marcus officials. Unfortunately for this situation, the primary legal tool against cyber criminals is the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, which “mainly prohibits unauthorized access to a computer – a limited and increasingly outdated legal standard,” said Seattle U.S. Attorney and chair of the Attorney Generals cyber-crime enforcement...

...Marcus Garvey on Race During the 1920’s, Marcus Garvey created the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) that thrived on racial purity and nationalism. Though he had many enemies, especially those of his own race, Garvey was determined to create a country for Black people to improve the lives of Blacks globally. He was compelled to form this organization through experiencing racism and taking note of the racial inequalities all over the world. Earlier, race didn’t have a meaning until Garvey turned fourteen. At the age of fourteen, Garvey and his white playmate were separated by her parents. They called him a “nigger” and separated them for life. After experiencing racism first hand, Garvey realized different races have their own and distinct social lives. The differences between races were further clarified after the...

...Marcus and Simon Case Study (Draft) As part of Core Ethical values, it is recommended that employees exercise good judgment in their professional practices and abide by all ethical principles as laid out in Company’s code of conduct manual. It is all employees’ responsibility to adhere to a high level of honesty, integrity and self-discipline at the work place. In the case of Marcus and Simon, I think Simon should “Take the Bull by the horns” and do what is appropriate in the interest of fairness and for the good of the Company and public at large. Marcus may have been a friendly boss, and Godfather to Simon’s two children. He should lean more towards loyalty to the profession. It is true that Marcus is an even-tempered man and a real professional. That notwithstanding, the quality of his work has begun to slide and if proper action is not taken, it could lead to a catastrophic end of the company. Marcus is going through serious personal struggle. Marcus’ marriage of twenty years is ending abruptly due to infidelity on the part of his wife. The situation is taking a toll on him, and negatively impacting his job performance. Several Marcus’ colleagues have become aware of what he is going through and offered to help but he declined their offer. This could be pried taking over common sense. I believe Simon should follow his hunch that if proper action is not taken, Marcus’ errors will impact the firm and will in turn have terrible consequences for both the public and the...

...EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Marcus Island healthcare system is characterized as socialized medicine where all residents have access to primary care, pharmaceuticals and diagnostic testing. While residents have access to care, they are responsible for a small portion of the payment at the time of service, and in some cases, those who are willing to pay a premium are afforded better access to services. While patients themselves believe their healthcare is either adequate or good, there are several aspects of the Marcus Island healthcare system that suggest care could be better. Specially, Marcus Island’s health care system has been running increasing budget deficits for the past five years. The health care system lacks access to comprehensive services including preventive care and screenings, mental health, dental service, and specialty care. Long wait times for appointments are an issue, as well as continuity of care between providers. Furthermore, there is no system in place to track quality of care indicators. An overhaul of the health care system is needed, including improvements in budgeting and increasing access to the full range of comprehensive health services. In addition, implementation of an electronic health records system would allow for greater continuity of care, improved efficiencies in services, and tracking of quality indicators. DEMOGRAPHICS Demographics: Marcus Island has thirty million residents; the population is growing. Family size is generally...

...Frederick M. Kennel Instructor: Chef Chapela CL410 A (SP16) 13 April 2016 Assignment #1 I. Characteristics of Marcus Lemonis I chose Marcus Lemonis because of my interest in his TV program “The Profit” on CNBC. What caught my attention was the “handshake deal.” It to me established his character as being a man of his word – truly honest. Next, he founded each new business relationship with “I am 100% in charge.” This represented his commanding leadership. Ultimately, the entire process of his entrepreneurship style is cemented in his “3 Ps” – People, Process, and Product. This formulaic approach translates his passion for helping struggling businesses succeed by helping the entrepreneurs cultivate their people, fine-tune their process, and bring their excellent product/service to market. Marcus has a keen eye for analyzing P&L numbers, minimizing costs, maximizing margins, and offering viable solutions to broken processes. Through his charismatic leadership style, he inspires the owners and employees to rally behind the collaborative process to succeed, which benefits everyone involved – owner, employee, customer, and consequently society. II. Brief Business History Marcus graduated from Marquette University in 1995, but decided not return to his family’s very successful car dealerships in the Miami area. Instead, he blazed his way through the ranks of AutoNation during his late twenties to regional manager of 65 stores in 11 states. At the advice from Lee Iacocca, a close...

...E-Commerce Introduction The retail industry is very large and full of many different strategic groups. There is a strategic group that focuses on the finer tastes in life and caters to a more upper-class market. Three dominant members of this group are Saks Incorporated, the Neiman Marcus Group, and Nordstrom. Through e-commerce strategies we will be able to see the similarities and differences in these firms’ core competencies and business strategies. Background Since 1998, Saks Inc. has opened forty-seven new stores. Their capital spending has increased to over $1.4 billion and they have upgraded or remodeled the majority of their stores. Saks Inc. has also reorganized into two distinctive groups; the Saks Department Store Group (SDSG) and the Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprise (SFAE).
