Intentionality as discussed by Margaret Davidson (pg.173-180), is the artist's active decision making in purposeful design. Her interpretation on the matter states that an artist mindfully chooses everything for a reason, whether it be paper, medium, or mark, each thing is deliberate and specific. Each intentional and conscious choice will ultimately shape the artist's piece in a very precise way. The intentionality of a piece however, goes beyond the tools made to create it; it also involves what the piece is depicting as well as why it conveys a specific message to the audience. When utilized, intentionality can be the artists greatest tool.
With every artist you will see intentionality displayed in a very unique way. What may be the intentional goal of one artist, may very well be the avoidance of another. In my own art work, I use blank space intentionally. He used detail, his own memories, and other personal references to intentionally depict his view of London. His intentional use of the entire space forces the viewer's eyes to try and examine one detailed part at a time. When looked at as a whole, this piece seems like a messy concoction of ill made shapes and lines, however, when closely examined, one will see the painstaking amount of detail Fuller put into each thing he drew. He intentionally spends years creating elaborate pieces that contain fully blow out works of detail. For him, intentionally covering all of his given space allows him to fully express what he is seeing and in turn trying to show back to the viewer.
