“Maria Full of Grace” is a movie about a young woman who lives in a three generation all female household that is desperately trying to break the cycle of how these Colombian women live their expected lives. Maria is a feisty seventeen year old that works in a rose plantation and is expected to financially contribute to her family as well as her sister who is an unemployed single mother. She wants out and unfortunately is pulled into the drug world by becoming a “mule” or “drug carrier” in order to financially secure herself and family. The twist to the movie is that Maria is pregnant and she only tells the father who has no interest in her or helping. So, she’s basically left all alone to figure out how to provide a better life on her own.
The most desirable character in this movie is most definitely Maria. From the beginning you can tell she wants more from her life other than what she watched her grandmother and mother go through. Working in the rose plantation gives the viewer a first glimpse of her thorough disgust for doing this manual labor for menial wages and no respect whatsoever from her boss. At one point while discovering that she was pregnant, she had to succumb to her boss’s ability to approve or deny her to leave her work post to use the restroom because of morning sickness. When she discards all over the roses she was prepping, he then denies her the use of the restroom and makes her clean every last inch of the soiled roses. How different is this scenario in modern times to what the slaves went through on the other types of plantations during their time period?
Next was the scene where she is with Juan, her boyfriend, having some relations and there is a shot where she is looking up at the sky totally ignoring what he’s doing. She’s seeing that there is a whole world

Maria Full of Grace

...Joshua Marston's superior and shattering Maria Full of Grace manages two of the hardest tasks a narrative film can achieve. For one, it tells a story of personal misery, shot through with strong ideological overtones, without reducing its protagonist to a mere symbol or its screenplay to a simple polemic. Moreover, it is the rare film that starts out very strong and gets increasingly better. Add into the mix that this is the Brooklyn-based Marston's debut feature, directing a new actress in nearly every scene of an all-Spanish-language movie—none of the cultural backgrounds or political dilemmas represented in the movie reflect Marston's own biography or experience—and Maria Full of Grace seems all the more impressive. To top it all off, at the time of this writing, Maria trails only the mass-marketed martial arts opera Hero as the highest grossing foreign-language release of the year. When aesthetic dexterity, cultural sensitivity, and positive audience response unite this pointedly, staying at home just shouldn't be an option. This exquisite and profoundly humbling film is as good as they come. Marston has reported that Maria Full of Grace was inspired by his acquaintance with a neighbor who came to Brooklyn as a drug "mule," the horribly but unavoidably cruel colloquialism for women, usually young girls, who are recruited to smuggle drugs into the U.S. (and, no doubt, elsewhere) by transporting them inside their bodies. These women swallow pellets hard-packed with cocaine...

Reaction to Maria Full of Grace

...Reaction to Maria Full of Grace Maria Alvarez was not just any ordinary 17 year old Colombian girl. In the movie Maria, along with her best friend Blanca, strip thorns off roses to make a living. She must contribute parts of her paycheck in order to help her family out. This shows that she loves her family, and will do just about anything for their well being. One simililarity this movie has with America and its cultures is teenage pregnancy. Not only is it a rising problem in America, it has become an international phenomenon. When she reveals to her boyfriend, Juan, that she might be pregnant, Juan suggests marriage, which is a type of family value that has been an practiced for quite some time and has become a well known approach in America. One one level, it is the story of a young woman who feels trapped by the confines of life in a small town and is looking for a way out—searching, as it were, for a situation where she feels more truly at home. Once Maria begins to move she keeps on moving throughout the film. Maria Full of Grace is an display of the complexities surrounding women's involvement in drug trafficking and becoming a woman in a male dominated society. The movie effectively portrays the differences in lifestyle between the United States and South American countries with much smaller Gross Domestic Products. Also there are many examples of communication that are impeded because of America's view of women's current role in society. Drug mules, those...

Drug Codes In Mean Girls

...Another girl's name Lucy, who had done that type of job already had one of the pallets popped inside her and was killed by the drug traffickers in order to get the rest of their merchandise. Drugs in this film were portrayed as a path for a better life, but in reality only has two routes either go to jail or die doing it. Maria needed way to support her as well as her family economically and at the time this seemed to be the most effective way in her country. The film itself contains a strong message of due to the lack of job and/or poor wages pushes teenagers to work for Drug Lords and become traffickers. In a family the responsibility shouldn't be carried by one family member, it should be divided because if it's carried on one person only...

Montessori Material

...Maria Montessori described the sensorial material as the key to the universe discuss this statement and give examples to support your discussion. Dr,Maria Montessori was dedicating herself to understanding how and why children learn. Montessori discovered that the child learns different from an adult, the child seeks an internal aim but the adult seeks external aim. Maria believed that the first years of the child is the most important one; the child is forming his personality and absorbing every thing from the environment. She called this period from 0-3 the unconscious mind. And the second period is called the conscious mind is the age from 3 - 6 years the child now is building his will and his memory. "The tiny child's absorbent mind finds all its nutriment in its surrounding especially at the beginning of life .we must there- fore, make the environment as interesting and attractive as we can." ( The Absorbent mind ). The child also needs freedom in order to develop. A prepared environment is a place that is created for a special purpose. In this to assist the full and natural development of children between ages of 3-6. The prepared environment should contain everything that is necessary to enable the child 3-6 to develop fully. To achieve this it must also make it possible for the child to function independently, to explore and discover for himself. It should also be attractive so that invites the child and every thing should be accessible to reach. Dr Maria...

Language

...Language lies at the root of that transformation of the environment that we call ‘civilization’. How is language encouraged in the Montessori prepared environment? Language is something that I can’t explain. It is absurd for me. What I know is I am able to speak to communicate what is on my mind to other people, but the process how did it happen I barely remember it. Before I learn about Montessori, I used to think that language is something that comes naturally. I thought it was something ridiculous if children learn how to write and how to read in early age because I was thought that eventually children could done it easily. Well, I guess I was wrong all this time and sure I am taking for granted that I was underestimate how we can speak, read, and writing. Human needs practice to be fluently in speaking, to be understood in reading, and to be able to writing a simple note. In fact, human being learns language from he or she was an infant. An infant is first exposed to language through sounds generated by the environment and languages spoken by the adults surrounding him. As I observe my 9 months old son, he starts babble when he was 6 months old now he is more talkative event tough he can only say baba papa mama or dada. But I always replying what he says in order to make him feel respected, to teach him Bahasa and I don’t want to lose his sensitive period. Language is goes a long way in establishing a people’s identity, somehow showing people’s artistic, economic...

...Joaquin Anareta Rizal Today We all know that Dr. Jose Rizal did not only spark a revolution but also added a huge chunk of fuel to the flames of Filipino nationalism through his writings and his philosophic ideals. But to what extent is the question. It’s obvious that our national hero loved our country and believed in something greater for our country –a brighter tomorrow, a future of equality. He believed in our potential as should any other country-loving citizen. Indeed, there was no man of that time better qualified to inspire the people. He definitely did not fall short on his credentials, considering he studied medicine in Manila and travelled to Spain to finish his medical degree and later studying ophthalmology in Germany in high hopes of curing his mother’s slowly failing eyesight. While he was in Europe, he became part of the Propaganda Movement, cultivating his nationalistic views which would much later be manifested by his two greatest works, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, two novels that spoke of the dark aspects of the Philippines under Spanish colonial rule, focusing mainly on the abusive friars and the power hungry politics that plagued the local government. This gives rise to the common misconception is that Rizal yearned for independence from our Spanish colonizers. There is no doubt that Rizal loved his country which begs the question “Why wouldn’t he want independence?” Well Rizal was a well educated man who lived most of his adulthood in Spain...
