In Boston in 1832, Maria W. Stewart, an African American educator and writer, delivered a lecture in which she inform the audience of the effects of hard labor on the African American people, in addition to how even the free African Americans are still victims of oppression. Stewart uses a variety of rhetorical strategies, such as appealing to the audience's emotions and creating credibility in order to help the audience understand the tragic lives African Americans are living in.

Maria Stewart appeals to the emotions of the white Americans by connecting and relating to their feelings. In saying, “...I am as willing to die by the sword as the pestilence; for I am a true born American; your blood flows in my veins, and your spirit fires my

Rhetorical Analysis On Maria W. Stewart

...In the opening lines of Maria W. Stewart’s speech (1832) she asserts that there is no defeating the statistic of colored people being nothing more or less than a servant and no happiness will ever accumulate, death would be a better option than the life of a house-domestic. Stewart supports her claims with observation and knowledge of fellow honorable and aspiring servants, Also her willingness to die by a sword of “pestilence”. Her purpose is to show the ignorance in owners and uplift those with possible higher purposes in order to rise above the stereotypes and become free and independent. She uses very explicit and passionate tones for her fellow servants to build a relationship and convey similarities. In the second paragraph, Stewart...

Rhetorical Analysis Of Speech By Maria W. Stewart

...In the lecture given by Maria W. Stewart, who was an African American educator, uses multiple different forms of rhetorical strategies to create a powerful speech, where as in this lecture the most dominate strategy that reoccurs is the use of hyperbole. With the use of hyperbole, Stewarts compares servile labor to the equivalent of slavery. Within the lecture, Stewarts states in the beginning of the text, “Few white persons of either sex, who are calculated for anything else, are willing to spend their lives and bury their talents in performing mean, servile labor. And such is the horrible idea that I entertain respecting a life of servitude...” , so reviewing the text, Stewarts compares that of pointless demeaning work, compared to slavery...

Discovering Truth in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

...from guilt and disgrace over the way she was treated while enslaved and the actions she was forced to take to become free, particularly those pertaining to sexual acts. Wanting to be viewed as a “proper Christian” she decided to create the pseudonym name Linda Brent. It was under this name the text was published. In later years, her text has been viewed as an important text, speaking truth to the ears of sentimental novel readers in the north, and calling for action against the cruel institution of slavery. Employed as a teacher by Pace University in 1968, Jean Fagan Yellin wrote and published her dissertation. While re-reading Incidents in the 1970s as part of the project and to educate herself in the use of gender as a category of analysis, Yellin became interested in the question of the text's true authorship. Over the next six-years, Yellin found and used historical documents including the Amy Post papers at the University of Rochester (Post was a close friend of Jacobs), state and local historical societies, and the Horniblow and Norcum papers at the North Carolina state archives, to establish both that Harriet Jacobs was the true author of Incidents, and that the narrative was her autobiography. Her edition...

...Sustainability Research Sustainability is of increasing significance for businesses, communities, and national economies around the globe. Sustainability addresses economic, environmental, and social issues, but it also incorporates cultural dimensions. In the face of globalisation, societies seek to preserve their cultural values and community identity, while still participating in the global economy. In New Zealand the importance of sustainability issues has been recognised by central and local government policies, environmental and economic development agencies, and business leaders. Two of the active business groups focusing on these issues are the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development (NZBCSD) and the Sustainable Business Network (SBN). Waikato Management School is working in partnership with both of these key business groups on sustainability projects and events. Public Health Paper

...From past to present; the changing focus of public health by Maria Joyce Key sections include: Environment, infectious disease, locating public health, the enlightenment, the Sanitarians, national provision of services, the inception of the National Health Service, ‘crisis in health’, The New Right, The Third Way, new public health. Public health, the new ideology may be taken to mean the promotion of healthy lifestyles linked to behaviour and individual responsibility supported by government action; whereas traditionally the description tended to relate more to sanitary reform and ‘healthy conditions’. The chronological development of public health is mapped out, supported by the outlining and discussion of the emerging themes and influences pertaining to the study of public health. The approach to public health is positioned alongside the health of the population and the prevailing political/societal influence at the time. Public health is impacted on by poverty and environmental factors. Presently government policy to improve public health is delivered in a strategy that recognises the need for health improvement at times when the greatest impact on health is poverty and exclusion. The evidence reviewed demonstrates clearly that poor health without appropriate resources or intervention is cumulative and that the ‘right’ form of intervention can bring about long term health gains. Intervention from a national agenda needs to include individual’s health and the...

...Social Change and Modernity Edited By Hans Haferkamp and Neil J. Smelser UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA PRESS Berkeley Los Angeles Oxford © 1992 The Regents of the University of California INTRODUCTION Hans Haferkamp and Neil J. Smelser Haferkamp is grateful to Angelika Schade for her fruitful comments and her helpful assistance in editing this volume and to Geoff Hunter for translating the first German version of parts of the Introduction; Smelser has profited from the research assistance and critical analyses given by Joppke. 1. Social Change and Modernity Those who organized the conference on which this volume is based—including the editors— decided to use the terms "social change" and "modernity" as the organizing concepts for this project. Because these terms enjoy wide usage in contemporary sociology and are general and inclusive, they seem preferable to more specific terms such as "evolution" "progress," "differentiation," or even "development," many of which evoke more specific mechanisms, processes, and directions of change. Likewise, we have excluded historically specific terms such as "late capitalism" and "industrial society" even though these concepts figure prominently in many of the contributions to this volume. The conference strategy called for a general statement of a metaframework for the study of social change within which a variety of more specific theories could be identified. 2. Theories of Social Change Change is such an evident feature of...
