...Austin Matheney Professor Witschi ENGL 2220 4th December 2014 Contrasting Landscapes in Bless Me, Ultima As the pages flip, and the story unfolds, the audience begins to notice that the landscapes in Bless Me, Ultima play a vital role in many different facets of the novel. Throughout the novel, there is an obvious dichotomy between the llano, the land of the main character’s father, and El Puerto de los Lunas, the land of the main character’s mother. As Antonio, who is the focus of the novel, grows older, he is forced to make a decision between the llano and the Luna. This decision is not based upon which land to dwell upon, but rather on which path Antonio should place his life: the dreams of his father or the dreams of his mother. Rudolfo Anaya, the author of the text, also utilizes other simple landscapes, such as the river and the pond, to aid in the coming of age of Antonio. Ultimately, Antonio must choose a path in life, and Anaya implements these different landscapes in order to exemplify Antonio’s struggle and development. The land of both Antonio’s father and of Antonio’s biggest inspiration, Ultima, is the llano; a beautiful landscape of rolling hills and dark plains. At first glance, this is all that the llano holds, but the llano is much more than just a beautiful piece of land to the vaqueros, to Ultima, and to Antonio’s father. The llano represents freedom and embodies the spirit of the vaqueros, or herdsmen, who are a group of people that Antonio’s father...

...Dom Casmurro Reflective Statement My understanding of the cultural and contextual considerations of Machado de Assis' Dom Casmurro was greatly expanded by this interactive oral presentation. This presentation focused on the mythological archetypes, which providing insight that deepened the meaning of many scenarios. This presentation was very helpful covering Thetis, Aurora, Homer's cow, and Priam. This information has been highly helpful in analyzing the novel. Knowing how Bento wanted to describe Capitu to Aurora and Thetis helped me understand how he viewed her. He didn't end up describing her hair to Aurora's because, “I was yet unfamiliar with this goddess”. Aurora's hair of sunburst and sun rays were probably not a good enough way to describe Capitu's hair. Bento crossed out Thetis and nymph and instead wrote “a beloved creature, which is a word which embraces all the powers.” Thetis was one of the 50 Nereids and their leader. She had her son Achilles with King Peleus, who she didn’t really like. Bento described Capitu's undertow eyes like Thetis' because she was the goddess of the sea. The sea has an undertow current that drags people in just like Capitu's eyes dragged in Bento and made him love her even more. Homer's cow is about the sun god's Helios' immortal cows. Odysseus' crew kills the cows and Helios gets mad. He kills the crew except Odysseus because he escaped to Calypsos' island. Homer's cow was used to describe Jose Dias' eyes and how they “dragged themselves...

...Hispanic American Diversity NAME CLASS DATE TEACHER Hispanic American Diversity When we look at people's it's interesting to see that they are different in some ways yet alike in other ways. The people may be from different parts of the world, however, they share the same language, religious beliefs and even skin color. Some people are very protective of their cultures and become offended if you mistake their culture for a similar culture. Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans and Latinos are four groups that fit into this category. This research paper will give us an in-depth look at each group identifying their similarities and their differences. Mexico is a Latin country with a complex culture that spans different times in history. The Mexicans are proud of their country, culture and lifestyle and try to preserve it as much as possible even when they are living anywhere other than Mexico. Out of the 26.4 million Hispanics that live in America, 64% of them are Mexican Americans (Thinkquest.org). The Mexican American culture is a mixture of the Mexican culture and the American culture and often causes them to stand out. The primary influence comes from Spain while the secondary influence comes from America. Mexican Americans have strong ties to their families loving each other and taking care of each other. Honor within the family connects all the members together and loyalty without question is expected. They work hard, strive to live in...

...Dimensions of Latino Experience In the United States there are foreign and domestic born Latino groups. The Latino population is growing at a high rate in the United States. There are eight different Latino groups, which are Mexican, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Colombian, Ecuadorian Salvadoran Peruvian and Guatemalan. In regards to the literature review on Latino experience I have gathered in the semester is that. Puerto Ricans historically have been the 2nd largest Latino population in the New York City. I know from personal knowledge that the Cubans that are domestic born are the richest among all the Hispanic groups right now in 2015. Cuban’s Latino group is at the top in regards to socio economic and educational attainment. In Latino studies and survey’s focuses on comparing socio economic conditions and cultural conditions and problems found within in each primary Latino group. Latino group on the whole still control a small portion of wealth in New York City compared to non Hispanic White, Black, and Asian city residents. The socio economic lower income levels among Latinos maybe at least partially because of lower education attainment compared with Asian, Black and non Hispanic whites. Approximately two thirds of New York City Latinos over the age of 25 reported having no college education, which is higher than Asian, Black and non Hispanic. Puerto Ricans are also the only national group in the Latino population where the majority of respondents were born in the United...
