Strong beautiful women have long been admired by American society. While standards have changed as to what is considered beautiful, nothing has changed in the way that people idolize celebrities. Back in the mid-1900s, women were most beautiful when they were curvy and had fuller bodies. During the 1950s, Marilyn Monroe, an actress, singer, and model, was the ideal image of the perfect woman. She had beautiful blonde hair, a curvy figure, and was successful. She was the woman that every man wanted to be with and that every woman wanted to be.
However, there was much more to her than what met the eye. Monroe had a rocky upbringing and because of this she suffered from many psychological issues including attachment disorder, depression, insomnia, …show more content…
Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortensen, was born on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California (Henriksen, 2000). Norma Jeane was born to her mother Gladys Baker and an unknown father. Her mother had previously been married to Edward Mortensen, her last husband before Norma Jeane was born (Henriksen, 2000). While some speculated that this was Norma Jeane’s father, no one could be certain because Gladys Baker had also been seeing another man, Charles Stanley Gifford, around the same time (Owings, 2013). Neither man claimed Norma Jeane as their daughter; therefore, she lived her life without a father. Not long after birth, she was baptized and went by the name of Norma Jeane Baker, her mother’s surname (Owings, 2013). Unfortunately, her mother was too far involved in her own life to really care for a child. Gladys Baker gave Norma Jeane up for adoption less than two weeks after her birth (Spoto, 1993). This was Norma Jeane’s first experience with being abandoned and it would not be her …show more content…
While living at the Orphan’s home, Norma Jeane “sent herself a postcard ‘signed’ by her mother and father” (Schwarz, 2009). This was part of her made up story that her parents would be coming back for her and were just traveling (Schwarz, 2009). Clearly she suffered from psychological issues such as reactive attachment disorder. A person who suffers from this disorder is likely to have difficulty establishing relationships later in life and will have emotional issues (Mayo Clinic, 2015). While Norma Jeane needed someone to love and care for her more than anything, no one was around long enough to help her work through her issues.
After this stint at the orphanage, Grace took Norma Jeane back to live with her and her family. However, things still did not work out. Instead, Norma Jeane went to live with Aunt Ana, Grace’s aunt, in 1938 (Owings, 2013). Aunt Ana was the only one in Norma Jeane’s life who provided comfort and help. A person is bound to have many issues when they do not truly feel loved and understood until some point in their teenage years. The developmental years are the most important in a person’s life because it defines who that person will become and how they will carry

Marilyn Monroe Biography

...Monroe, Marilyn (1 June 1926-5 Aug. 1962), film actress and sex symbol, was born Norma Jeane Mortensen (and was also known as Norma Jeane Baker in her youth) in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Gladys Monroe Baker Mortensen, a film cutter, who was unmarried when she gave birth to Monroe (her father has never been positively identified). Gladys Mortensen was an avid movie fan, but Monroe spent very little time with her often unstable mother. Within two weeks of her birth, Monroe was placed in the first of what would be a succession of foster homes, guardianships, and orphanages. This experience convinced her that she was a "mistake," a person easily abandoned. Given an insecure childhood that included the trauma of sexual molestation and an early marriage (to James Dougherty in 1942; they were divorced in 1946) arranged in part to prevent her return to an orphanage, it is a testament to Monroe's tenacity, personal strength, and resilience that she managed to achieve the heights in her career that she did. Her marriage to Dougherty compelled Monroe to quit high school, and her lack of formal education furthered her sense of inadequacy. While her husband served in the merchant marine during World War II, Monroe found a job inspecting parachutes at the Radioplane Company (1944-1945). Army photographers who had arrived at the plant to take commercial and military pictures of female war workers discovered her. From this first successful posing arose Monroe's fabled "love affair"...

Marilyn Monroe

...Marilyn Monroe was a legend. In her own lifetime she created a myth of what a poor girl from a deprived background could attain. For the entire world she became a symbol of the eternal feminine. But I have no words to describe the myth and legend. Nor would she want us to do so." Those were the words delivered at her Eulogy by Lee Stratsberg (Lefkowitz 114). The Eulogy summed up her impact then and it does now as well. Marilyn Monroe impacted music, movies, society and culture, in her time ,and still does today. Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson, as it said on her birth certificate, although she was also known as Norma Jeane Baker because she never knew the true identity of her father. She was born on June 1 st, 1926 in Los Angeles (Lefkowitz 21). Norma Jeane's childhood and life was anything but perfect. Shortly after she was born, her mother, Gladys Baker, was admitted into a rehabilitation center. Looking back on it she remembered her mother only as the "woman with red hair", who on occasions, would stop in and visit her (Wilson Biography II). From that point on she went from foster home to foster home. She also spent time in an orphanage in Los Angeles (Wilson Biography1). When her final set of foster parents was to move to California she decided to get married. At the age of sixteen she married 23 year old, Jim Dougherty. (McKittnick 1) The marriage lasted until 1943 when Dougherty joined the Merchant Marines during World War I. (Biography.com article 2) During...

The True Light of Marylin

...The True Light of Marilyn When we here the name Marilyn Monroe many thoughts come to mind. Was she that big time Hollywood star that overdosed on drugs? Was she Hollywood’s angel with hidden secrets? Internally she was stuck in darkness and externally it seemed as if she was always in the light. All of these thoughts circulate in our heads about who Marilyn Monroe really was when in reality, she was just a person who wanted to be loved and feel wanted. Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jean on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. Her issues started as a child. Her mother was a single parent and was not around due to work and later being placed in a rest home due to her mental illness of schizophrenia. Consequently, Norma was moved around between family members and eventually ended up in several orphanages. By the age of 15, one of Norma Jean’s family members thought it would be good for her to marry their next door neighbor so she could have some stability in her life. The union between them only lasted several weeks because shortly after the marriage he went to the merchant marines and was shipped away. Feeling alone and needing extra money, Norma Jean began to work at a factory where she was discovered and got her first break as a model. Personality Disorders: Marilyn Monroe

...Marilyn Monroe was a troubled woman who wanted to understand herself, her institutionalized mother, and her chaotic childhood. She wanted to understand her pain and be released from it. Her whole family had seemed to yield to madness, so the threat of “insanity” stalked her at every turn. She sought to educate and get cutting edge treatment to strip off what she feared was inevitable. Most of her life she wasn’t the glamourous starlet we envision her to be. Under the glitter was a regular girl trying to get a grip on things and constantly trying to learn and improve. She read at length, and treated everyone she encountered as a teacher. Poetry was her favorite. She would delight in words, seeking to frame and define her twisting and glorious emotions. Gloria Steinem was one of the first biographers to look for Marilyn the person. After she wrote a relatable article about Marilyn in Ms. Magazine, tons of letters poured in from women who identified with Marilyn in some way. They, too, had suffered miscarriages, domestic violence, childhood molestation that no one believed. They had been overprescribed painkillers, sleeping pills and tranquilizers for common problems, they, too, struggled with the difference between their internal identity and the way others perceived them. Marilyn represented something so big on the screen, something so inaccessible and fantastic, that her vulnerability could seem aggressive. “How dare she be just as vulnerable and unconfident as I felt?” Gloria...

Marilyn Monroe Research Paper

...Marilyn Monroe started her acting career when she was 20 years old. Although the name “Marilyn Monroe” was popular, it was not her real name. “At age twenty Monroe had her first screen test, signed a contract with 20th Century-Fox, and adopted her stage name of Marilyn Monroe (she legally changed her name in 1956).” (Margot A. Henriksen par. 3) Throughout her career, Monroe acted in many dumb blonde roles. She enjoyed being the center of attention at first, but as her career continued to develop, so did she. She longed for people to notice her as a strong woman rather than a sex symbol. According to Marilyn Monroe “a sex symbol becomes a thing, I just hate being a thing.” She couldn't stand acting as a dumb blonde, so she flew to New York...

Her father was not a part of her life and her mother was mentally ill making Monroe an orphan and in foster care. She was in and out of homes until family friends were paid $25 a week to take care of Monroe. While living with them she was not allowed to go to movies or have much of a social life. The home was short-lived due to the couple having to relocate for a job. Returning to the life of foster care at age 7 caused Monroe to be sexually assaulted on multiple occasions until getting married at age 16. Having no high school diploma Monroe started work in a factory until being discovered as a model which later caused her get a divorce. Her career took off as she changed her image to be the model she always dreamt of being. Starting out as a small part in The Asphalt Jungle jumped started her acting career as well. He was born in 1915 in Harlem, New York and raised in a very wealthy household by his parents, Isidore and Augusta Miller. After high school Miller worked lots of jobs to save up enough money to attend the University of Michigan, where he wrote his first paper that turned into his first play, called “No Villain”. Once he realized what he was good at, he moved east to start his new career. There he met his first wife Mary Slattery, but their relationship did not last long, and three weeks after the divorce he married actress Marilyn Monroe. This relationship was very good look for him because of what Marilyn Monroe’s career was at the time. He “divorced Monroe after five years”, and several months later “got married to Inge Morath”, whom he had two children with, Rebecca and Daniel Miller. There was one flaw about this family though, that “Miller excluded his son Daniel out of their lives” for the longest time. Miller did not want Daniel around because Daniel was diagnosed with Down syndrome, but Miller’s daughter, Rebecca, was married to a wise man that convinced Miller to keep seeing his son, because he did not feel that Miller was doing the right thing. ...development and personality paper on is Marilyn Monroe. I have always been very fascinated with Marilyn Monroe. She is an American icon but did not lead the life of glam and glory that she led people to believe. Inside she was a very troubled, sad and insecure woman. In this paper I am going to explore the personality and background of Marilyn Monroe from the viewpoint of developmental psychology. In my exploration of Marilyn Monroes’ background and how I can point out what impacted the young stars life from the viewpoint of developmental psychology I will focus on the influences of her heredity and environment. As well as what family and social support systems influenced Marilyn Monroes’ developmental growth and adjustments. I will also address two different theories of personality I have tied with Marilyn Monroe and lastly I will explain which theoretical approach I believe best explains Marilyns’ achievements and behaviors. I believe that the early childhood development, or should I say lack of played a key role in Marilyn Monroes’ life and her unhappiness. Marilyn Monroe, who was actually born Norma Jean Baker was born into a family that had a long line of mental illness. Marilyns’ great grandfather commited suicide, her uncle went on a run for errands one day only to never be seen again and her mother who had been married and divorced twice prior to Marilyn left her two eldest children to be cared for by neighbors. When Marilyn was only two weeks old her mother left...

Death of Marilyn Monroe

...On the night of August 4, 1962, Marilyn Monroe died of an overdose of Nembutal, a Barbiturate. She was found lying naked in her bed, face down, clutching the phone tightly in her hand. There were several empty bottles of sleeping pills on the table next to her bed. Her housekeeper, Eunice Murray, had been there all night. Around 3:30 a.m., August 5th, she became alarmed that Marilyn's light was still on and that the door was locked. She called Marilyn's psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, and he immediately rushed over. When he arrived they looked in Marilyn's window and saw her lying on the bed. They then proceeded to break into her room, and when they found out she was dead they called the police. The coroner pronounced it probable suicide. This is the official version of what happened. But one must also take into consideration the cover-up, the conflicting stories of what happened, and the inefficiency with which the investigation was carried out. Marilyn Monroe did not die by her own hand, it was someone else's. Who killed her? Was it the Kennedy’s or the Mafia? What reasons did anyone have for killing Marilyn Monroe? Did she know too much? Was she a security risk? Was her death used to blackmail the Kennedys? Whoever the person, whatever the motive, Marilyn was dead, and it was due to foul play. The man who performed the autopsy on Marilyn was Dr. Noguchi. His report stated that her blood contained 8 milligrams percent chloral hydrate, and her liver contained 13 milligrams...

The Judging of Beauty

...The Judging of Beauty The dictionary defines beauty as a beautiful or pleasing thing or person, in particular a beautiful woman; an excellent specimen or example of something; (the beauties of) the pleasing or attractive features of something; the best feature or advantage of something. But it refers to only the outward appearance of things. So is the inherent beauty excluded from the judging of the beauty? In the real world, we consider Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn as beauty. Both of them are celebrities with a nice-looking face, perfect body and great fashion taste. And they have the characteristics indicated in the dictionary to be such beauty. So people would classify them as particularly beautiful women. Clearly, there are huge differences between these two beauties. Marilyn Monroe was a major sex symbol during the 1950s and 1960s. She was beautiful and sexy on television. In a contrast, Monroe’s personal life was a mess. We can clearly see from her personal life that she did not have any beauty inside of her. She not only had a naked shoot for a magazine; had three marriages; rely excessively on drugs and pills but also had affairs with both John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy. Various marriages, naked photo shoots and drug abuse might not say it all, but having affair with two men clearly can. It’s on a moral prospective. Her affairs Zhang 2 with two men meant she did not put herself on a right position. Such a woman had no connotation because of her moral...

Analyze 20th Century Quest for Religion, Racial and Gender Equality

...How did they influence artistic works of the time? The influence of artistic work was a great one in the 50’s-80’s time period. With the equality of women being able to vote, and the rights of African-Americans being able to vote, sit with white people and attend the same schools as white people this gave artist of the time a chance to be bold in every way they could be. To me art is not just paintings and sculptures but it also music and movies. Rock-n-roll was a big hit in the 50’s thanks to Elvis Presley whom to me is the greatest musical artist of all times. If it were not for him and his music then there would be no type of rock-n-roll type music. The Beatles would probably not exist nor any other rock group. If movie stars like Marilyn Monroe did not exist then there would no sex symbol for women to idolize like Anna Nicole Smith did and become famous. Without Jim and Tammy Bakker the Christian religion would not have been televised and a way for other religions to be televised and come out in the open for the world to experience. Andy Warhol experimented with film and brought out the most postmodern types of film in history. Throughout the century religious, racial and gender equality was the biggest influence in time. Come the mid 90’s time changed and people were no longer influenced by what was going on in this time period instead they just redo something and call it art. Musicians take music and sample it or just redo a whole song. Film directors are redoing classic...

I can say that every object in my plate, symbolizes me or my personality. The “Pink Shoe” and the “Pearl Bracelet” represents Fashion. I've always had a 'Passion For Fashion’. Ever since I was a little girl,  I have been reading fashion and beauty magazines. I was always wondering how women could bring out the best in themselves. In fashion, my biggest inspirations are definitely Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Gabrielle Chanel. They show the difference between a woman and a lady. In my free time I like to read fashion magazines, fashion and beauty blogs. I love to surf the internet to look up all sorts of fashion online shops. Not just to see what’s new, but to get inspired as well. Being involved into “fashion” is really a big thing for me. Because in that way i help myself increase my self-esteem. My interest in fashion started at a young age. I enjoyed spending my days alone playing with my Barbies. I repurposed their clothes with a stapler and tape and gave them haircuts to match their look. The “Green Ribbon” represents how girly I am. The “Red Nail Polish”. When I became a teenager, like I said, I love colors! and so I’ve been very addicted to nail polish. Its just I’m so plain, without them. And I really take good care of my nails. Also, believed in the saying “Nails Are Like Jewels, Don't Use Them Like Tools”. The “MAC...

...‘’I knew I belonged to the public and to the world, not because I was talented or even beautiful, but because I had never belonged to anything or anyone else.” Marilyn Manroe, perhaps the most iconic woman of the twentieth century. Due to the suffering she experienced mostly as a child bouncing in and out of foster homes she desperately searched for attention and affection. A part of what she was missing was compensated by the love and admiration her fans showered her with and what she claims made her the star that she was. Her combination of beauty, sexiness, intelligence and vulnerability is what made her legendary, who continues to inspire many till this day, however that is not all that she was. Marilyn was famous for acting, modeling, singing, etc. She certainly had the whole package. However the entire world was mesmerized by her because of her sexuality and charm. She posed nude for a calendar shot and appeared on the first issue of playboy. The promotion of those photos made Monroe a very popular star. Her fame enlarged when she won a golden globe for her performance in the movie “Some like it hot”. And what launched her as a sex symbol was her appearance in big roles like” gentlemen prefer blondes” and “how to marry a millionaire”. Her dumb character was used for comedic purposes in films; however she was not dumb at all. In fact people recall her being a perspicacious and shrewd business woman who took her craft very seriously. Unlike other contemporary celebrities...
