...IL Divo Live in Barcelona Charliena Diego Professor Nancy Barlar HUM 11- World Cultures 1 Dec 18, 2012 IL Divo Live in Barcelona I was not able to attend this concert in person, but I did watch it on youtube.com on December 18, 2012 at 12:46 pm on a Tuesday afternoon. I sat and watched it by myself in my family room, because my children and husband do not care for this kind of music as I do. The concert was with IL Divo, they are four men named David Miller, Sebastien Izambard, Carlos Marin, and Urs Buhler, and they are dressed in black suits when they come out on stage. The concert was live in Barcelona on April 3, 2009 and the performance was at the Palau Sant Jordi. IL Divo is surrounded by an operatic quartet that plays the music beautifully. My initial reaction about this concert/place is what a magnificent place the Palau Sant Jordi is, it was built in the year 1990 in Barcelona, Spain. I truly wish that I could go and see these four beautiful men sing their hearts out, I would be in awe over how big and beautiful these guy’s voices truly are and I bet in person it would be an amazing gift to hear. The song that IL Divo sang is one of my all time favorite songs from Simon & Garfunkel is/was Bridge over trouble waters. Un- break my Heart originally sung by Toni Braxton who sang it in 1993 and she sounded great when she sang it, but when IL Divo sang this song they blew my mind away with the way their voices are so rich and deep it’s like floating in chocolate...

...Reading Response 6 Calvin Tomkins, “Christo’s Public Art: How to Win Friends, Outlast Enemies, and Make the Social Structure Work for You in Northern California,” is about the artist Christo and his Running Fence project. The project took place in Marin County, California and consisted of a shimmering white cloth that acted like a fence but rippled in the wind. The fence route ran through Marin County and down the coast into the ocean. When the nylon had been pulled as far as it would go into the ocean, Christo talked to Don Dickenson, of the Marin County Planning Department because Christo had been working in the forbidden coastal zone, which was a violation to the Coastal Commission. Christo has gone outside the normal art world to put all his time in projects that have no market for. It is projects only made for viewers to observe and not to buy. His projects only alter the environment only briefly before they are taken down. Christo creates public art and the involvement and the whole process is the crucial and most important part of the project. When Christo tried explaining the project to the Ranchers in which the fence would cross their land, he stated that it was a fence without function and a celebration of the landscape. I have seen a documentary on this project in one of my other classes and didn’t understand the project as much as I do now after reading Calvin Tomkins writing on the project. I didn’t understand the point of the fence on the coast at all and...

...Nico Zayas ENG 210 5/6/2013 Rosario Ferre and her influence on the Puerto Rican women’s movement Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1942 to a sugar industrialist family, Rosario Ferré grew up in a politically active household. Her father, Luis was a large influence on her as he was very well connected in Puerto Rican politics. Luis was one of the framers of the Puerto Rican Constitution and served as governor of the island from 1968 to 1972. After earning a Master's degree from the University of Puerto Rico and a doctorate from the University of Maryland, Ferré herself became politically active. She founded the Puerto Rican literary journal Zona de carga y descarga, which from 1970 to 1976 served as a forum for young Puerto Rican authors. In 1976, her first collection of short stories was published. These were the Papeles de Pandora which included "The Youngest Doll." Ferré's fiction focuses on the status of women in Puerto Rico and their role in Puerto Rican society. This along with her magical realism style makes for interesting stories. Ferré is credited with starting the feminist movement in Puerto Rico where she was one of its most resonant and forceful spokespersons. "The Youngest Doll" tells the story of a woman in Puerto Rico and describes the class and gender barriers that she seeks to change. The setting of the youngest doll takes place in a decaying sugar plantation in rural Puerto Rico, where a woman lives with her nine nieces where she has decided against a...

...question comes to mind: is it a short, clever story of an actual rose growing from concrete, or a symbolic representation of Shakur himself? When reading into it further, it seems to be the latter. The opening lines read, “Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?” (1-2) The rose that Shakur alludes to is meant to represent himself. This is something that could be assumed easily, but what is the crack in the concrete? This question could be a lot more complicated for someone who does not know much about Shakur. The crack in the concrete is a metaphor for Shakur's background: the projects. The crack in the concrete is representative of the streets he grew up in, from Harlem, NY to Baltimore, MD and eventually to Marin City, CA. Cities riddled with gun violence, gangs, and drugs during his time. Shakur is...
