The Avoidance of Pressure Injury on Marjorie Templeton Using Evidence Based Practice
Procedures, protocols and guidelines evolve as new research shows for more efficient practice. Nurses must stay competently with these changes as evidence-based practice offers patients the best quality care, avoidance of adverse effects and variances (White, Dudley-Brown & Terhaar, 2016). Performing care that is poor evidence based can put the patient at risk of their safety and quality of care (Clarke & Donaldson, 2008). Prevention, Assessment, management and communication with the patient are the appropriate interventions when handling a patient with a risk of developing pressure injuries.
Marjorie Templeton was admitted to the emergency department with an infected foot ulcer by her general practitioner. According to the patient notes Templeton has insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, also known as type 1 diabetes or autoimmune diabetes (Katsarou et al., 2017). Pressure injuries, more commonly known as bed sores are a result pressure and friction to…show more content… A focus on the type of mattress Templeton will lay on will be focused on. Tradition mattress can produce higher amounts of friction, are generally non-breathable and can contribute to pressure (Cooper, 2013). There is an array of mattresses that a patient who is in risk of developing pressure injuries can have replace the traditional mattress. Low air lose mattresses had lower rates of pressure injuries within ICU units were found in a study (Black, Berke & Urzendowski, 2012). In this study low air lose mattresses were being compared to integrated power air redistribution beds they found that pre-existing pressure ulcers would worsen on the air redistribution beds. Additional high-quality studies will be required to form a stronger understanding on the different type of mattresses available for high risk
