Summary of Mark Antony’s Speech

In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, there is a character named Mark Antony, he gives a speech at Julius Caesar’s funeral. People consider this speech to be one of the most finest and most remembered lines written by Shakespeare. This speeches main function was used to invalidate Brutus’s convincing statement of how Caesar actually died, Antony also wanted to shift the mood of the crowd. Mark Antony knew that Brutus had made the crowd believe that the death of Caesar was going to be most beneficial towards Rome. Brutus had just finished giving his speech on what had happened to Caesar and it was Mark Antony’s turn to address the crowd and he knew that he would have to hold a neutral ground at first to gain some support of the “plebeians” in line 75, Antony says, “ I have come to bury Caesar, not to praise him”. Antony then begins to talk about how Caesar is remembered by his bad deeds, but then he goes forth and addresses them on how Caesar also did good things he had done. “The evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones…” in this quote Mark Antony uses a literary device called personification and in this quote Antony personifies the attributes of good and evil.

Antony also uses another device called reiteration to suit a common person’s emotion. Antony keeps on repeating “Brutus is an honorable man”. However Antony uses a sarcastic tone whenever he mentions these words. Antony returns again and again to this increasingly sarcastic tone. By the end of the speech the crowd recognizes honorable as a bad word. This is a persuasive technique called emotional appeal. Antony makes them believe that the murder of Caesar was not honorable at all and it came about with a great hatred, he proved this by showing them all of the stab marks on Caesar’s body.
Antony’s main goal during this speech was

How Does Mark Antony Use Ethos In Julius Cesar

...reading, and they are often compared due to their different approaches. In Julius Cesar, Mark Antony's funeral speech is written better than Brutus' because he employs pathos, repetition, and ethos to go against Brutus' claims without directly attacking him. Mark Antony uses pathos effectively by giving an image that a reader can almost see. This occurs in the second paragraph when Antony says in Act III Scene I, "Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept." Antony is saying in this quote that Cesar sympathized with the poor. This quote appealed to the emotions of the Roman people by allowing them to know that this act of Cesar was not ambitious. This was definitely effective because the citizens of a town are always ready to side with the poor, as was Cesar. Antony uses a second form of Pathos towards the end of his speech in line 59-60 when he presents Cesar's will to the people and it reads, "And they would go and kiss dead Caesar’s wounds. Mark Antony's Loyalty

...Mark Antony was Caesar’s friend in both the play and in history. During Caesar’s first year long dictatorship in real life, Antony was second in command, so they were pretty close. Just like in the play, Antony was very good with his words and the way he spoke. Historically speaking, after Caesar was killed, Octavian (Octavius in the play), was at first his rival. They fought each other before they became the second triumvirate with Lepidus. They all split up the land between each other in real-life, Octavian had the west, Antony had the east, and Lepidus had Africa. Antony then defeated his friends assassins in Philippi, just like in the play. Mark Antony was very loyal to Caesar. I think that the moral of him is that it is good to be loyal...

Julius Caesar Rhetoric Essay

...turn the mob against the conspirators. Antony persuades the people of Rome to follow him and Caesar instead of Brutus. Brutus is a respectable man and is himself honourable, but most importantly he has mastered the art of rhetoric. Antony states in his speech that "[Brutus] Hath told you Caesar was ambitious", and then Antony retorts with "I thrice presented him [Caesar] a kingly crown which he did thrice refuse." By doing that, Antony carefully rebuts Brutus' statement that Caesar was ambitious and starts turning the crowd against the conspirators. Throughout his speech Antony calls the conspirators honorable men. He then says, "You [the crowd] all did love him once, not without cause. What cause withholds you then to mourn for him?" This question goes against Brutus by questioning his speech when he betrayed Caesar. Now the crowd is starting to turn against the conspirators and follow Antony. Antony then teases the crowd with Caesar's will, which they beg him to read, but he refuses. Antony tells the crowd to "have patience" and expresses his feeling that he will "wrong the honourable men whose daggers have stabbed Caesar" if he is to read the will. The crowd yells out "they were traitors" and have at this time completely turned against the conspirators and are inflamed about Caesar's death. To refute Brutus' claim that Caesar was a heartless tyrant Antony recounts "how dearly he [Caesar] loved him [Brutus]". Next, Antony humbles himself as "no orator, as Brutus...

Julius Caesar

...Both Brutus and Mark Antony have two entirely different purposes and agendas in each of their speeches to the Roman citizens. Brutus' aim is to convince the throng of restless Romans that Rome has been saved thanks to the gallant conspirators for slaying the avaricious, power-hungry, Caesar. However, Antony, a loyal friend of Caesar's, wants to show Brutus and the conspirators for what they really are: nothing but savage murderers who killed Caesar out of spite and jealousy and not for the good of Rome. By doing this, Antony hopes the fickle mob will turn into a bunch of irate demagogues that will settle for nothing less than the revenge and deaths of the conspirators. Brutus' speech is a useless and ineffective from start to finish. Approaching the citizens as intelligent scholars, when in fact, the mob consists of nothing but illiterate commoners, who cannot figure out for themselves what is right from what is wrong, was Brutus' fatal mistake. Throughout the duration of the speech, Brutus mentions how he loves Caesar and how no one has more remorse for the death of Caesar than himself. After paying tribute to the miraculous life of Caesar, Brutus explains that he killed him because he loves Rome more than Caesar, and that Caesar had become ambitious. Of course the gullible crowd is pleased to hear that Brutus loves Rome. But they cannot grasp the concept of being assassinated for ambition, as Brutus did not say in what way Caesar was ambitious or why he should be so severely...
