It all started this summer I was on a quest to find the other half of me, my soul mate some may say. On my quest I did find a person who I thought would be my soul mate but wasn’t. By using Mark Knapp’s stages of getting in and out of a relationship, I’m going to tell you about this summer time heartbreak. But first I must explain that there are ten stages of Mark Knapp’s relationship stages in getting in and out of a relationship. Mark Knapp’s getting into a relationship stages are initiating, experimenting, intensifying, integrating, and bonding (Author Mark, K., pg. 208, Figure7-1). And Mark Knapp’s stages of getting out a relationship are differencing, circumscribing, stagnating, avoiding, and termination (pg. 208, Figure 7-1). First off the girl I fell for was not a girl I would typically fall for because she wasn’t my type. And when we went into the Initiating stage of our relationship as described by Mark Knapp as the stage of starting a relationship (pg. 208, Figure 7-1), I just saw our first encounter as a friendly conversation. ... The script is a good example of the interpersonal communication ten stage model by Mark Knapp. This developmental model entails the stages of a relationship from it’s infancy to an ending. In the movie we can clearly identify all ten stages of this model. Stage # 1 - Initiating According to the Knapp model, the beginning of every relationship—especially an intimate, romantic or close friendship—begins with the initiation stage. This stage involves the initial contact with another person. In the movie the stage of initiation begins when Harry and Sally meet for the first time and prepare to share a day travelling together in Sally’s car from Chicago to New York City. During this stage Harry and Sally are introduced by Harry’s girlfriend and begin their trip. Stage # 2 - Experimenting The second stage of the Knapp model, experimentation, is usually focused on time spent between people getting acquainted. During this stage people usually making “small talk” and it helps prepare the stage for future communication and interaction. ...Interpersonal Communication Interpersonal communication describes the process of communicating ideas, thoughts and feelings to another person or a group of people. Interpersonal communication skills are acquired behaviours which improve with knowledge and practice. Interpersonal communication occurs between at least two people who usually interact face-to-face and act at the same time as objects and subjects of knowledge, message receivers and message senders. The nature of interacting is different when communicating with friends, family or strangers, but the aim is always to learn more about the other person using both verbal and nonverbal communication. Interpersonal communication can be defined in many ways but is usually described as communication among those in a close relationship (Alberts 189). The Break Up is a perfect movie that will show examples of the definitions used. Individuals initiate relationships with those they see as attractive, while physical appearance is critical in forming a relationship so is a mental and the ability to communicate effectively. When initiating a potential romantic relationship flirting comes in many forms. Ambiguous flirting isn’t overt or obvious and always leave the possibility open that flirting wasn’t happening at all (Alberts 199). Regardless of the technique used, flirting aims to fulfill one purpose: stimulate sexual interest.
