Buku ini saya beli ketika mengikuti mata kuliah desain produk..Dosen saya waktu itu menyarankan untuk membeli buku ini sebagai rujukan dalam mata kuliah desain produk..Dosen saya juga memberi tugas untuk meringkas buku ini…Ketika saya berniat membeli, ternyata malah sudah habis (uda pada diserbu temen – temen)…Ya sudah akhirnya terpaksa saya “import” dari Solo…Sebenarnya saya bisa saja “men-copy” buku ini (wah..pelanggaran hak cipta nih..), Tapi “feeling” saya buku ini cukup “worth” untuk dibeli, jadi ya saya bela – belain sampai import dari Solo…Setelah saya baca, ternyata buku ini memang cukup layak untuk di beli…Buku karangan Tom Kelley ini menceritakan tentang inovasi dari sudut pandang praktis, berisi beragam cerita dan pengalaman “berkreasi” dari IDEO, sebuah perusahaan desain produk paling kreatif di dunia yang telah menciptakan berbagai macam produk inovatif mulai dari mouse asli Apple, tube pasta gigi berdiri, hingga alat analisa darah berteknologi tinggi.
Inovasi dimulai dari mata! Konsep “Menjadi orang kidal”, Konsep “Melihat produk dalam keadaan bergerak” hingga Konsep “Melihat dengan mata juling” merupakan beberapa konsep yang dijabarakan secara realistis bagaimana sebuah ide dimulai untuk mengembangkan sebuah produk dengan tentunya terus menerus berusaha memahami pasar, klien dan teknologi untuk kemudian mengamati orang – orang dalam situasi kehidupan yang sebenarnya untuk menemukan apa yang membuat mereka bertingkah laku seperti itu : apa yang mereka sukai dan benci, apa kebiasaan mereka, dan apa yang belum ada pada produk yang tersedia saat ini. Karena, ketika kita membicarakan tentang inovasi seringkali kita terlalu berfokus pada hasil akhir, namun bila kita mencoba melihat inovasi dari sisi yang lain yaitu inovasi sebagai kata kerja bukan kata benda, kita akan menyadari bahwa inovasi tidak berarti toko yang indah tetapi pengalaman belanja yang menyenangkan. Perusahaan yang hebat memerlukan tim yang penuh semangat. Inovasi memerlukan tim ! Bahkan ayunan tangan Tiger Wood yang sempurna pun hasil kerja keras banyak orang. Namun faktanya, menjaga tim agar tetap semangat bukan perkara mudah, apalagi dalam kaitannya dengan desain. Membentuk tim bersemangat bergantung pada pola pikir, IDEO percaya bahwa tim yang paling kuat akan berhasil bila individu – individu diberi kesempatan untuk memilih dangan kelompok mana mereka bekerja, dan pekerjaan macam apa yang ingin mereka kerjakan dan pada akhirnya setiap pekerjaan harus ada unsur kegembiraan. Hal inilah yang membuat IDEO seperti “Tempat Bermain Imajinasi” karena mereka semua berusaha menerbangkannya dengan semangat.
Cara terbaik untuk memperoleh ide bagus adalah dengan mendapatkan banyak ide. Bahkan mereka juga mengharapkan hal – hal yang tidak terduga untuk dijadikan ide. Menyatukan ide – ide untuk dijadikan suatu inovasi adalah sebuah tantangan sekaligus pembelajaran dalam sebuah perusahaan, curah pendapat menjadi suatu sarana yang baik untuk pertukaran ide tersebut. IDEO percaya bahwa mereka dapat memberikan nilai lebih, menciptakan energi lebih, dan menumbuhkan lebih banyak inovasi melalui curah pendapat yang lebih baik.
Selanjutnya adalah pembuatan prototipe sebagai perwujudan inovasi. Prototipe bukan hanya berkenaan dengan penemuan besar seperti DNA atau penemuan kecil seperti mainan anak -anak, tapi IDEO percaya bahwa sebuah gambar bernilai ribuan kata dan prototype yang baik bernilai ribuan gambar. Prototipe yang baik tidak hanya dapat “berbicara” tetapi juga harus dapat mempengaruhi.
Mengembangkan inovasi, Membuat prototype, bercurah pendapat, dan mengevaluasi dan menyempurnakan prototype secara berulang – ulang semuanya butuh tim! Dan tim memerlukan tempat bersemi dan tumbuh sehingga dapat menciptakan pengalaman untuk kesenangan dan keuntungan. Inovasi tumbuh dengan baik di rumah kaca. Apa maksudnya? Rumah kaca disini adalah tempat kerja, pengaturan ruang di dalam kantor dan tim – tim dapat bekerja bersama untuk melompati penghalang. Penghalang? Ya..!! Pola pikir perusahaan, kultur budaya, hingga permasalahan teknologi adalah masalah yang sering terjadi dalam inovasi. Alat berteknologi “terlalu” tinggi hanya akan menambah koleksi museum dan tidak akan laku dipasaran. Lalu bagaimana mengubah kegagalan menjadi kesuksesan? Kegagalan adalah sisi sebaliknya dari mengambil resiko, dan jika tidak berani mengambil resiko maka kita tidak akan sukses. Maka langgarlah aturan namun tetap berfokus untuk mendengarkan suara konsumen. Bahkan jika kita telah memilki orang dan tempat yang tepat, inovasi akan mengalir secara otomatis. Tapi ada satu hal lagi yang tidak boleh tertinggal, kecepatan!! Seberapapun hebatnya sebuah tim berinovasi, semuanya akan sia – sia bila kita melampaui tenggat waktu ditengah tegangnya persaingan dan dibawah sorotan mata klien yang hilang kesabaran.
Kesuksesan Inovasi seperti menyatukan pukulan golf yang sempurna. Teorinya memang mudah, menundukkan kepala, lengan kiri lurus, dan lutut sedikit bengkok. Mudah bukan? Bagian tersulit adalah menyatukan teori memukul saat bemain, kemudian melakukan pukulan tersebut berkali – kali secara konsisten. Membangun budaya inovasi adalah sesederhana dan sesulit memeriksa dengan teliti ide – ide dalam buku ini dan mengadosikannya kedalam kondisi kita yang sebenarnya. Inovasi bukan masalah kesempurnaan. Kita dapat mencoba bersusah payah sedikit agar pukulan kita sapat sebagus Tiger Wood. Keluar dan amati pasar, pelanggan, dan produk yang ada. Malakukan curah pendapat gila – gilaan dan membuat banyak prototype dan jangan lupa semangat inovasi sejati yang jenaka namun serius.

We would not start urging his resignation at this stage, but if next week's results are weak and the group fails to tackle its problems on clothing over the next six months, then his position will come under pressure."
