Market Share
The India air conditioner market in 2011 was estimated at 3.14 million units. According to latest data from market researcher GfK-Nielsen India, LG's volume market share in multi-brand outlets-a key sales channel that accounts for almost 90% of AC dealerships-stood at 17.7% in May 2012 against 18.3% of Voltas.
Samsung retained its third slot in room ACs but its market share has plunged from 14.5% in July 2011 to 10% in May 2012. The drop was a result of it vacating the window AC segment this year; now it is not far behind Japanese brand Panasonic, which has doubled market share to 9.9% in the last 10 months. Even Hitachi increased its market share from 5.2% to 7.3% in the period.

2. Washing Machine
The Indian washing machine market continues its high growth trajectory, albeit the annual growth rate has come down from 38 percent in FY 2010 to 24 percent in FY 2011. The total market of washing machines in FY 2011 was 4.7 million units.
The market is dominated by four players - LG, Samsung, Videocon group, and Whirlpool - with a combined share of 74.6 percent. This is a drop by 4.55 percent from last year. Godrej and Onida each are in the vicinity of 6-8 percent market share. IFB, Haier, TCL, and Panasonic are also aggressive in this segment. Other brands include Weston, Toshiba, Gem, T-series, Beltek, Texla, ETA O’General, Maharaja, and SVL.
The semi-automatic segment continues to have a dominant market share of 65 percent in terms of quantity, at sales of 3.05 million units in 2010-11. However, in value terms they are almost neck-to-neck in the `4900 crore industry. Fully automatic sales is estimated at 2500 crore, the balance 2400 crore being contributed by semi-automatic segment.

The Indian air-conditioner market in 2011 is estimated at 3.14 million units, a 19 percent decline over last year. LG and Voltas dominated the market with a combined market share of 41 percent. Samsung contributed 12 percent to the market, and Hitachi 7 percent. Other aggressive brands such as Daikin, Panasonic, Blue Star, Godrej, Onida, Videocon, Whirlpool, and Carrier were each in the 4-6-percent sales vicinity. The Indian microwave ovens market, consistently growing between 20 and 25 percent over last 4 years, since 2006. The year, 2010-2011, saw a growth of 9.5 percent. The market is estimated at 1.38 million units valued at 800 crore. LG was clear leader with 29 percent market share. Samsung market share stood at 18 percent. Onida and IFB were neck to neck with an 11 percent share each, as were Godrej and Whirlpool at an 8.7 percent each.
