...Study case : Diesel “Live, breathe and wear passion” 1 : Explain which of the promotional strategies used by Diesel are above- or below-the-line. Analyse the impact that each approach might have ? There are two different types of promotional strategies. One is above the line and the other one is below the line. Above the line is using the media like television, radio to promote your product to a mass audience. Below the line is looking to reach a customer not a whole bunch of people, an example of a below the line is using catalogues, direct mail. An above the line strategy used by diesel is through commercials and billboards. The Television ad of diesel has probably the biggest impact to their company because everyone watches television. When people see their advertisement they will think about the product and if they like it they might go to a Diesel store and buy their products. Another above the line strategy that Diesel uses is music. They now have their own radio station and they sign bands that are unknown and give them a chance to be heard by people. This can help Diesel to promote their company because when the unsigned band becomes famous Diesel will sponsor them when they go to tours and concerts. People who like the band will copy what their wearing and therefore diesel will be able to sell. A below the line strategy that Diesel uses is they have special offers. Customer’s loves special offers, so when they see that Diesel has a special offer, they...

...Is the Truck Half Empty or Half Full? Karinna C. Milans Bellevue University RCBC320 February 12, 2013 Introduction In the world of “big box” retailers, selling product at competitive, low prices is not the only thing that is required to be successful. These retailers also have to make sure that they have enough products available to satisfy customer demand. At the same time, retailers must be careful not to sit on their financial assets by overstocking their warehouse with unneeded merchandise. Proper inventory management is impacted by several factors including verifying on-hands, correct capturing at point-of-sale, effective merchandising, product ordering, and receiving of the product. The first four factors are directly controlled by the retailer itself. The final factor, receiving of product, can be affected by outside influences. The product sold by retailers arrives at their final destination via vendor trucking companies or parcel delivery companies like UPS. The cost of these delivery services can highly fluctuate based on the cost of fuel, and can have a negative impact on all parties involved including the customer. In this paper, I plan to discuss how the high cost of fuel affects the operation and capital of a major retailer such as Home Depot. First, let’s take a closer look at Home Depot by conducting a SWOT analysis. StrengthsLarge buying powerProprietary vendors | OpportunitiesOnline sales “Green” shipping options | WeaknessesLimited...

...useful plants, is found as a good source of Moringa oil. This oil is believed to be a biofuel source. SECURA International announced that malunggay oil is being tapped by the North American Biofuels Inc. (NABI) since January as possible raw material for biodiesel production. As a result, the former is currently growing malunggay in 500,000-hectare farmland to meet the demands of NABI.Since malunggay can easily be grown in the country, SECURA International president Danny Manayaga encouraged the Filipino farmers to take advantage of the situation in meeting the demands of the world for the Moringa oil supply to be used as biodiesel. Manayaga said this business is sustainable since the market is very accessible. Currently, there are 165 marketing companies in the U.S. for biodiesel using soybean oil as raw material. It is expected that in the next 50 years, Japan and Korea will be the biggest markets of Moringa oil for their automobiles that will use biodiesel. Earlier, the Philippine government is endorsing jatropha as a source of biofuel. However, Manayaga said Moringa oil is more useful that jatropha. What makes malunggay better than the jatropha is that malunggay is 100 percent usable; all parts are biodegradable. Unlike jatropha, it has a toxic part. Once its oil is extracted, the left-over part becomes a nuclear waste according to the findings. With malunggay as a biofuel source in the Philippines, the country may in some way help other countries...

...insurance to clients through an overall merchant network Caterpillar is the world's driving producer of development and mining hardware, diesel and regular gas motors, mechanical gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. With more than US$89 billion in resources, Caterpillar was positioned number one in its industry and number 44 overall in the 2009 Fortune 500. Some of the key steps that lead to Caterpillar becoming the industry leader in earth-moving machinery are the strategic decisions, strong foundation and sustainability. The story of caterpillar dates back to the late 19th century when Daniel Best and Benjamin Holt each were experimenting with ways to fulfil the promise steam tractors held for farming. Prior to the merger that formed Caterpillar Tractor Co. in 1925, The Hold Manufacturing Company and C.L. Best Tractor Co. had individually pioneered gasoline-powered track type tractors. The first Diesel Sixty Tractor was produced in 1931. By 1940, Caterpillar’s product line had expanded to include motor graders, blade graders, elevating graders and electric generator sets. During World War 1, Holt’s track-type tractors were in great demand by the Allies for pulling and supply wagons through harsh conditions. Troops in World War 2 also relied on Cat equipment, including track-type tractors, motor graders, generator sets and special diesel engines for M4 tanks. The post war period ushered in numerous new products and the company’s first foreign subsidiary. In 1950, the...

...! BIODIESEL INCORPORATED (Case Study p565-569) Joshua Maxwell shut down his laptop and looked out the window. From the second floor of the Graduate School of Management’s new building, he could see a number of cars driving on the nearby freeway and sitting in the adjacent parking lot. Josh was in his last term of the full-time MBA program at UC Davis. He would soon be graduating and entering a new chapter of his life. While he had the luxury of having several management-level job offers from which to choose, he was unsure whether he wanted to follow such a traditional route. There was one opportunity in particular that had recently come across his path which gave him pause. Background The previous term, Josh had been enrolled in Professor Dorf’s class on Business and Sustainability. While the class was offered at the GSM, it was open to the entire university. In this class, he met Hannah Long, who was in her final year of her undergraduate studies in Agricultural Economics, and Matthew Hammond, who was a senior in the Mechanical Engineering department. The three began working on a class project, which would ultimately turn into a formidable business opportunity. The impetus for their collaboration began with a lecture-discussion regarding the challenges and opportunities in the emerging renewable energy industry. The Challenge Dependence on energy is a worldwide reality. Energy powers the machines and equipment around us in order to make life more convenient and efficient...

...Volkswagen Research “The Volkswagen emissions scandal explained” http://www.theguardian.com/business/ng-interactive/2015/sep/23/volkswagen-emissions-scandal-explained-diesel-cars * “Volkswagen has been cheating in emission tests by making its cars appear far less polluting than they are. The US Environmental Protection Agency discovered that 482,000 VW diesel cars on American roads were emitting up to 40 times more toxic fumes than permitted - and VW has since admitted the cheat affects 11m cars worldwide.” * “…far more harmful NOx emissions, including nitrogen dioxide, have been pumped into the air than was thought – on one analysis, between 250,000 to 1m extra tonnes every year. The hidden damage from these VW vehicles could equate to all of the UK’s NOx emissions from all power stations, vehicles, industry and agriculture.” * “VW’s “defeat device” is not a physical device but a programme in the engine software that lets the car perceive if it is being driven under test conditions - and only then pull out all the anti-pollution stops.” * ““Clean diesel” engines cut emissions through techniques such as adjusting air-fuel ratios and exhaust flows, and in some (though not most VWs) injecting a urea-based solution to render NOx harmless. When running normally, requiring greater performance, VW’s controls would not operate in the same way.” * “How does the defeat device know it's being tested? The EPA tests have known practices and profiles. In many...

...CASE STUDY SUMMARY: MARKETING EXCELLENCE CATERPILLAR The steam tractors of the 1890s and early 1900s were extremely heavy, sometimes weighing 1,000 pounds (450 kg) per horsepower, and often sank into the rich, soft earth of the San Joaquin Valley Delta farmland surrounding Stockton, California. Benjamin Holt attempted to fix the problem by increasing the size and width of the wheels up to 7.5 feet (2.3 m) tall and 6 feet (1.8 m) wide, producing a tractor 46 feet (14 m) wide. But this also made the tractors increasingly complex, expensive and difficult to maintain. Caterpillar was founded in 1925 when two California based tractor companies merged. The name “Caterpillar” Company photographer Charles Clements was reported to have observed that the tractor crawled like a Caterpillar, and Holt seized on the metaphor. "Caterpillar it is. That's the name for it!" Some sources, though, attribute this name to British soldiers in July 1907. Two years later Holt sold his first steam-powered tractor crawlers for US$5,500, about US$128,000 today. Each side featured a track frame measured 30 inches (760 mm) high by 42 inches (1,100 mm) wide and was 9 feet (2.7 m) long. The tracks were 3 inches (76 mm) by 4 inches (100 mm) redwood slats. Holt received the first patent for a practical continuous track for use with a tractor on December 7, 1907 for his improved "Traction Engine" ("improvement in vehicles and especially of the traction engine class; and included endless traveling platform...
