In our ebook it states, “Internal marketing requires that everyone in the organization accept marketing concepts and goals and engage in choosing, providing, and communicating, customer value. Only when all employees realize their job is to create, serve, and satisfy customers does the company become an effective marketer” (Keller & Kotler, 2012).
Johnnie Walker is a brand of Scotch Whisky owned by Diageo and originated in Ayrshire, Scotland. They came up with, what they thought was, a great commercial. To market their famous Johnny Walker Blue Label Whisky to the Asian customers, they decided to use a animation of Bruce Lee in the commercials. First, Bruce Lee was famous for not ever drinking any type of alcohol. This commercial shows them drinking Johnny Walker Blue Label Whisky. This upset Chinese people as you could imagine. I this same commercial, they showed Bruce Lee speaking Putonghua. Bruce Lee spoke Cantonese. As you could imagine, this too upset many of the Chinese people that saw this commercial. After a huge backlash from several different agencies on behalf of Bruce Lees family and some Chinese people, Diageo quickly pulled the ad from television.
This is just one example of a company not doing its research internally before spending millions of dollars on advertising.
I work for Duke Energy. Duke Energy needs to be nearly perfect with their internal marketing. They need to make sure that they keep their public image very position. Before we go out and build a pole line or provide power to a business or home, we have to research exactly what we need and how big we need to big to provide the right power for the right project. When we are off, it goes public very quickly and we need to keep our public image as high as possible.
