Case Study Directions

Harvard Business Review Cases all follow a similar format. The problem or challenge is presented usually in the form of a key business challenge and a decision or decisions that need to be made. What typically follows is some background information about the company to provide context and then specific information in the form of analysis, research or financial results that someone (you) need to look at and evaluate. The goal (your goal) is to provide a recommendation and advice on the right course of action and to back up your recommendation with solid analysis and reasoning.
The actual format of the case would look like this:

Executive Summary
This is the section designed for the ADD executive who doesn’t have the time or inclination to read through all the analysis you’ve done and just wants the facts and your recommendation in summary form. It is usually a page in length and includes the relevant facts, how you analyzed the situation, your recommendation, and why you believe this is the right course of action.
Situation Analysis
This section, also about a page but maybe more, summarizes the situation and provides your analysis of the various alternatives and the pros and cons associated with the choices based on the hard facts and data that have been provided. You get points for the way you have thought about the business problem and the analysis you have done to develop your recommendations.
Recommendations
This is the section where you make your final recommendation(s). What should the company do, why are you making this recommendation, and what do you believe the outcome will be if the company accepts and implements your recommendation? Once again your recommendations must be consistent with the analysis you have presented. The company is not looking for any fluffy opinions. As a consultant, you are getting paid $25,000 for this analysis and your recommendations. Make it worth it for the company and make them want to hire you back or offer you a full-time job. Lots of consultants get full-time gigs because they impressed the client with their consulting work.
