“I have a dream”.

Dr. Martin Luther king Jr was the most influential individual the world has known. His speech ‘I Have A dream’ is known worldwide and has not only touched the hearts of those who were fighting for equality, but even those who were against it. One of his many contributions that affected history was the black Sunday’, this march was instrumental in giving blacks the right to vote in Alabama. Dr. King’s actions were non-violent but were still effective in creating change. Not only did the actions of Dr. King go unnoticed but many of our leaders in The Bahamas were inspired and encouraged to fight for human rights, and social justice.

I hold a firm belief that as a champion for social justice and equality an individual who believes in anything, he/she should fight for this cause no matter the consequence. Some might think that those who hold a political status were more into their work than fighting for the rights of their country and people. Sir Lynden Pindling was one of the founding fathers of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP). Most recently Majority rule was celebrated as a public holiday in The Bahamas. Mr. Pindling played a major role in this event, like the United States of America Bahamians also suffered racial discrimination. People of color were not allowed to enter shops or even stay out in public after a certain hour. The PLP’s main reason for forming was to put an end to the rule of the UBP, who were manly white. With Sir. Lynden Pindling as their leader they were able to make history as, the first black party ever to gain majority seat in the house of assembly. Bahamians of color were now able to be truly free, without having to worry about getting arrested for being on the streets. Additionally they achieved the right to vote.
