I believe that Martin Niemoller would advise Whitman to take action against the situation in which he is found, to not sit still and watch while these atrocities are occurring entirely in front of him. "I sit and look out upon all the sorrows of the world, and upon all oppression and shame" (Niemoller 2) Niemoller would rather advise him to take leadership and initiate a change for the good of the society in which he lives. Encouraging him to not be indifferent to such situations because, he could find himself in a similar position in the future waiting for someone to advocate for him. This is my perception regarding the way in which Niemoller would respond to Whitman and I can emphasize this kind of response because of the way he responds.
