As Jackie traveled down south she began to see who she is as a person from her roots. In the south during the Civil Rights movement was labeled as a bad place but really is full of loving, welcoming, and spiritual families, just like the Irby family. Her grandparents are like her second set of caretakers, they have implemented what it means to be a family. The Irby's do things together, as one, as a family. There is a division between Jack Austin Woodson and Mary Ann Irby, also known as mom and dad to Jacqueline. This resulted in a split in Jacqueline's sense of family. Therefore the mom wants absolutely nothing to do with her daughters' father. For this reason, Jack is completely taken out of his daughter's life. How will Jackie react? She doesn't open up to anybody directly in parts I or II. In Greenville, South Carolina now lives Jackie and her family. When her mother goes to NYC to find a Home she if left with grandma and daddy. They do everything together including worship, grandma has always stressed the importance Jehovah's Witnesses, a form of Christianity. As she awaits the return of her mother she prays, worships, and grows spiritually every single day. This form a sense of the importance of spirituality come from mainly her daddy or grandfather. In part II her spirituality was a major part of how she wrote when she talks about her grandfather and her spirituality in part II it may be the most important parts of her at the moment. ‘But I want the world where my daddy is and I don’t know why anybody’s God would make me have to choose.” Daddy may be more important than religion, but who could ever make you choose.
