Mary Draper Ingles
Mary was a courageous woman. She was willing to do anything and everything for herself and her family. She had a rough spot in her life that could encourage almost anyone. Mary was also a great person who was thankful for everything in life. Especially after the hardest part in her life. She lived a beautiful life.
Mary and her family lived on the Virginia Frontier, in a place called Draper Meadows. There were hardly any casualties. Though, before long there was an awakening to them that there are going to be hardships. The war changed their life. The Shawnee indians came crashing into houses and ruining every part of life the people of Draper’s Meadows lived. They killed four innocent people, including a young child. The Shawnee indians injured one man and captured five people. Three of the five captured were Mary and her two sons. Her husband was away at the time, so he was completely safe. Hoping to make it home to the rest of her family, but was willing to die in the woods on her way back. She didn’t have much of a food source. Mary mainly survived on walnuts, grapes and a certain type of temperate fruit tree called pawpaws. “A letter from an unnamed correspondent, written from Augusta County and printed in the newspaper after their return, says that once they came upon an Indian skinning a deer; his dog barked at them, and the Indian fled as soon as he secured the hide. They were able to eat their fill of meat, and carry some with them to eat later” (Chronicles). The journey was rough. “Ingels wandered some 800 miles to return home, a legendary feat” ( Mary).
