I am Mary Draper Ingles. I was born in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania in 1732 to George and Elenor Draper who were Irish immigrants. I lived in Drapers Meadow with my parents and siblings whose names were Martha, Jane, John and John Sr.
What led up to the main event?:
I was married to William Ingles in 1750 and we were the first couple married west of the allegheny mountains. We had two sons, Tommy, who was four, and George who was two. Two French men were in the Indian town and I sewed red cloth that was sought after for them. In payment, they let me keep some blankets to keep my sons and I warm. The journey was made a lot longer because neither of us could swim, so we had to walk up and down the tributaries to find a place to walk across. After a few days, we ran out of squash and corn. We then survived on lots of things. Black walnuts, pawpaws, grapes, unknown roots and berries, dead animals, snails, leaves, bark and lichen were what we mainly survived on. I had a scary scrape with death when we were coming upon the end of our journey. Things got so desperate, that the Dutch woman tried to kill me. At that point, both of us were starving. She tried to kill me in my sleep. Luckily, I woke up and ran away in time. I felt bad that I had to leave her, but my life was in
