Mary Shelley, a devoted author, was also a devoted mother. Although motherhood was a depressing experience for Mary, she loved her children very much and despite the tragedies that she experienced she was always very involved as a mother. Mary met Percy Shelley at a Wollstonecraft's retreat in St. Pancras churchyard, though the two did not become romantically attached until two years later when Percy was twenty-two, and married, while Mary was sixteen. A month before her seventeenth birthday, Mary ran away with Percy and they traveled Europe even though Percy’s father cut him off his allowance. When they married the couple tried to gain custody of Percy’s children by Harriet but failed, after this Mary was pregnant four times and only one survived. …show more content…
brough much happiness to her life and helped her get through the devastating death of her husband. Mary described Percy Jr. as “A fine tall boy” and she though he “might have the art of painting in his tiny fingers” and was “amiable and vivacious I dare to hope for some comfort from him”. That same year Mary had a dangerous miscarriage which, of course, was hard for her. Following Percy’s death, Mary had no idea how she was going to make a living or how she was going to provide for herself and her child. Percy’s father, Sr. Timothy Shelley offered to give Mary financial support under the condition that he would take care of Percy Jr. Mary could never let go of her only surviving child so she refused and decided that she would provide for herself and her child by writing and selling books. Her financial situation improved when Sr. Timothy Shelley increased Percy Jr. allowance, which allowed Mary and Percy Jr to travel Italy and Germany. In this time they had many adventures and created many great memories together and she also wrote a book about it called Rambles in Germany and Italy. As a widow, Mary also wrote five more novels but they all received negative criticism. Some of her book, which many people believed to be autobiographical, were researches and searched for clues regarding her life and the people within her circle. Percy survived and he happily

...male authors than authors themselves. The perspective of Mary Shelley’s position has been no different, as for much of history, she has been recognized primarily as the wife of Percy Shelley, a prominent Romantic writer (Spark). However, the works of Mary Shelley distinguish her as more than merely the wife of a famous author, but an established writer and activist herself. Villa Diodati - Research Paper

...Phong Huynh English 205 Research paper Villa Diodati Villa Diodati is a mansion in the village of Cologny near Lake Geneva in Switzerland, notable because Lord Byron rented it and stayed there with John Polidori in the summer of 1816. Villa Diodati was originally called the Villa Belle Rive, Byron named it the Villa Diodati after his family owned it. Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley, who was renting a house nearby, is a frequent visitor. Due to bad weather, in June 1816, the famous group spent three days together in the creation stories to tell each other, two of which have been developed into the landmark works of the genre Gothic horror: Frankenstein Mary Shelley and the Vampyre, the first modern vampire story, by Polidori. In May 1816 the poet Percy Shelley, together with Mary Godwin and their son William travelled to Geneva. The journey across the French border and into Switzerland involved travelling through bleak, wintry landscapes. As Mary recorded afterwards in her travel volume History of a Six Weeks: Tour through a part of France, Switzerland, Germany and Holland (1817): “Never was a scene more awfully desolate. The trees in these regions are incredibly large, and stand in scattered clumps over the white wilderness; the vast expanse of snow was chequered only by these gigantic pines, and the poles that marked our road: no river or rock-encircled lawn relieved the eye, by adding the picturesque to the sublime”. The landscape, with its frightening, lonely...

Science vs God

...Genesis, God created everything from scratch. God created the heavens, earth, light, darkness, sea, stars, birds, and animals. God created a man and named him Adam. God created a woman and named her Eve. Adam and Eve were put in the Garden of Eden. The Garden of Eden was filled with fruit trees, animals, and there were river flowing all the time. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had plenty to eat. They did not have to work nor make money. Adam and Eve were naked but they were shameless. Adam and Eve did not have much to worry about. In the year 2001, we are living in the garden that is embedded with various scientific stuffs. Let’s just take a look at my life. Few years ago, I used the typewriter to write papers. Now, I am using a computer to write the paper. In the morning, the alarm clock wakes me up. I turn on the faucet to get water to brush my teeth. I pour out already brewed coffee from programmed coffee maker. I drive a car to get to the places. I wash my cloth in washing machine and dry them in the dryer. I don’t wear eyeglasses anymore because I am wearing contact lenses. Furthermore, this winter break, I am planning to have Lasik operation to correct my vision permanently. Then, I could say goodbye to my contact lenses. This is the sketch of my life, but just a part. I am living in the garden with full of scientific devices that I could no longer live without. Wow. How did we get here from the Garden of Eden to the Garden of Science? What makes the world...

Procreation

...I chose procreation as a topic for this paper for a few reasons. First, because of complicity of the issue. Scope of this problem almost unlimited and correlates not only with modern legal and ethical general acceptable principals, but also with core issues of human existence. Second, I do believe, that understanding of origin of procreation and ability to build personal approach in this issue plays significant role for every professional in the Health Care System. Even if in real life situation some of us will never directly participate in solving such problem, still establishing firm personal position on this issue will benefited everyone who involved in running of human services. Third, I think that in the scope of course “Legal and Ethical issues in Health Care”, procreation could be a best example to justify my personal opinion on the social role of ethics and its priority over the social role of legal system. In comparing law and ethics, many people thinking about law as a sphere of clearly identified and easy to recognize points, while sphere of ethical issues for many, more-less limited to the individual stand points in terms of what is good and what is bad. However, it is an ethics established law, not law established ethics. Especially in the procreation dilemma, it turns out ethics plays a big part in all aspects of breeding, in the sense that ethics makes our choices relevant to other people. The decision to have or not to have children has a profound impact on all...

...Carbohydrates are Killing Us Softly Thomas J. Engstrom Western Governors University WGU Student ID# 000529592 Carbohydrates are Killing Us Softly The nutritional dietary consumption of carbohydrates is between 55-75% for the vast majority of the global population as their main source of food intake and energy.  And the general populous continues to be misinformed by government agencies regarding what a normal, healthy diet, should be, as well as what a balanced diet looks like.  Eating a low-carb high-fat, or ketogenic, diet of high fat, adequate protein and low carbohydrates can provide many health benefits as compared to the alternative of an unhealthy diet. Research suggests that a ketogenic diet builds a healthier body than other diets because it will lead to weight loss, improved blood pressure, and reduce appetites. The ketogenic diet is the foundation for a healthy life. As noted by Dr. Eenfeldt (2014), The ketogenic diet has been referred to by different names, such as: the keto diet, low carb diet, low carb high fat (LCHF), and to some degree the Adkins Diet. The ketogenic diet is a well known diet for being associated with consuming a low amount of carbohydrates, a moderate amount of protein and high amount of fat, where the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy (Taubes, 2008). With a diet high in carbohydrates your body will produce glucose and insulin. Glucose is the easiest molecule for your body to convert and use as energy, so it will...

The Effects of Dream Length on the Relationship Between Primary Process in Dreams and Creativity

...1991 The Effects of Dream Length on the Relationship Between Primary Process in Dreams and Creativity Glenn Livingston l and Ross Levin l ,2 The effects of dream length on the relationship between primaty process in dreams and a measure of creativity unconfounded by IQ was investigated in a sample of 93 graduate students using the Auld, Goldenberg, & Weiss (1968) Scale of Primary Process Thought (SPPT) and a modified Wallach-Kogan (1965) creativity batte/yo Consistent with previous research, total and mean primary process were found to correlate significantly with creativity (r = .28, P < .01 and r = .23, P < .05, respectively). Both significant relationships disappeared, however, once the effects of dream length were partialled out, confirming Wood, Sebba, & Domino's (1989-90) contention that this relationship may be artifactual. It is suggested that dream length as an individual difference in and of itself may thus be a more fruitful variable to examine in future research investigating the relationship between creativity and dreams. KEY WORDS: dreaming; dream length; primary process; creativity. The contention that creativity and dreaming may reflect similar psychological processes has long been maintained by both the lay public and philosophers alike. In support of this, both the anecdotal and empirical psychological literature contain numerous references suggesting both a direct and analogical relationship between dreams and creativity (Adelson, 1960;...

Effects of Creative Educational Drama Activities on Developing Oral Skills as Perceive by the Teachers

...Chapter I PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction The age we live in may be defined as the communication age. Effective communication is considered one of the most important skills that individuals should have. Receptive and expressive language abilities constitute a significant aspect of effective communications in terms of language skills. One of the expressive language elements is speaking skill. Speaking is the most common and important means of providing communication among human beings. The key to successful communication is speaking nicely, efficiently and articulately, as well as using effective voice projection. Furthermore, speaking is linked to success in life, as it occupies an important position both individually and socially. As is the case with many basic skills, one of the important periods to improve speaking skill is, incontrovertibly, during primary education. Speaking skills acquired and developed during primary education are significant with regard to both acquisition and permanence. Therefore, it is essential that efficient and effective teaching methods are employed in order to improve speaking skills during primary education. In our view, a favourable technique in aiding primary school students to acquire and develop oral skills is the use of creative and educational drama activities. No matter where this technique is applied, creative drama may be considered a method of learning –a tool for self-expression, as well as art. Background of the...
