Does Schiller’s play accurately portray Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I’s lives?

Schiller’s play is set roughly in 1568, which was when Mary arrived in England in search of help from her cousin, the queen of England, Elizabeth I. Mary has had to flee from Scotland, where she was previously queen, but now her son, James, taken the throne. This is all because she had foolishly decided to marry the Earl of Bothwell, but was unpopular as he was suspected for the murder of her previous husband, Lord Darnley. Of course Mary chose to ignore this and married him! But, now many others thought that maybe she was involved in the murder of her husband, as just before his death they were having many arguments. The play shows Elizabeth and Mary’s way of living, how they feel about each other and their many arguments that were unable to prove Mary Stuart’s innocence.

I feel that Schiller’s play does offer an accurate presentation on Mary and Elizabeth’s lives because the play clearly states the feelings of each cousin. It clearly explains both Mary and Elizabeth’s thought about each other and their many differences that have kept them so distant. For example, while Elizabeth feels that locking Mary up for nineteen years kept her safe from her enemies, Mary Stuart felt that this act from Elizabeth was rude and deceitful. But Mary came to England as her cousin, expecting to be free, and all though protected, she was immediately treated like a prisoner. This extract from the play does give many clear points on Mary and Elizabeth’s lives, but from the play, we are only sure of Mary’s way of living, and not so much Elizabeth’s lifestyle.

Elizabeth is a very strong woman, who will not put up with others being rude to her. But, she is also a weak minded character, as she is unable to make firm decisions, until she believes it is the right thing. For example Elizabeth leaves Mary to rot for nineteen years, because it takes her that long to prove that Mary is either guilty or innocent. Because of this, she had to hire Sir Francis Walsingham, who desperately wanted to catch Mary plotting against his queen. So, he pretended to deliver all her letters for her. this meant whenever a letter was written, Sir Francis would read it first, before delivering it to where it was supposed to go. This was how the Babington Plot (her husband’s murder) was discovered, proving Mary guilty.

Only because of this evidence, was why Elizabeth signed Mary’s death warrant. But, she did claim that she only signed it because she had been threatened, which also shows how she was weak and unable to make choices. But, this also proves that no matter that Mary was a threat to her throne, a Catholic and murderer, Elizabeth was still unhappy about signing Mary’s death warrant, all because she felt sorry for her cousin, the lady who could be the death of her!

In Schiller’s play, he shows that Elizabeth is angry, saying “did you conspire to murder me out of love and respect?” She is angry for believing that Mary was kind and would be happy that she was taken into care, instead of been executed straight away. Elizabeth is also angry that she has given Mary a place to live, and yet she is still plotting to murder Elizabeth. This makes Elizabeth so mad, as she feels that she has been so kind to her cousin, and yet this is what she gets. Death plots! This is all from Schiller’s play, and it clearly states the life of Elizabeth, and her hatred from her cousin, for her, drove her so mad that she eventually signed the death warrant.

Mary is a strong lady who stood tall, and never gave up, no matter how much she was beaten and locked up, she always found a way out until till the very last time, where she died at the age of forty-five. She even escaped from an island just before she arrived in England. Mary had a failed attempt at escaping the first time, dressed as a washer woman, but the second time was a success for her. But, even being locked up in various places, Mary still continued to try and kill her saviour and her cousin. To Elizabeth, Mary was locked away but well treated, but for Mary, she was a prisoner, locked away from daylight for nineteen years of her life. She was unable to see her son, James. But she kept strong till the day that she died.

Mary was a very rude lady, according to the play script. For example she says “your mother was not really married to Henry.” No matter that her fate is in Elizabeth’s hands, she is not complimenting Elizabeth, but instead insulting her, saying that she should not really be queen, as her parents were not married. If this were true, then because Elizabeth has no heir, it would be Mary that would take over her English throne, and afterwards James. Mary is also shown as a respectful lady, as at the start of the play she kneels in front of Elizabeth, showing her respect to the Queen of England. Her attitude changes suddenly, as she becomes angry at the way Elizabeth is treating her, tell her that she kept Mary safe from her enemies, whereas in Mary’s eyes she was locked up to die just like a prisoner. In her mind she came to Elizabeth with open arms and kindness, but that has not been shown. Mary is also argumentative saying “I was in their hands, I was powerless.” To her she was given no choice, and decides to argue with Elizabeth, who angrily says how Mary never stood up and helped her yet expects help and kindness to be given. Mary’s life is told greatly, showing how many hardships she faced, and yet managed to live a full, but forced, life.
Schiller’s play does show both cousins lives, as well as how they behaved towards each other. Also, that even some of the greatest Kings and Queens are weak and end up feeling sorry for any of their family. But, it is important to prove if someone is guilty or innocent before deciding what their punishment is to be.

Judge Galina Yefremova rejected the petition, saying the court that sentenced Alekhina had already taken the child’s existence into account. Reaction: The crime that the two women had committed was very disrespectful, and definitely deserved harsh prosecution. They interrupted a church service and subjected people to whatever point they were trying to make. They covered their faces in church, a big disrespect in the Orthodox religion, stormed the Altar, forcing the church service to stop. Also, women are not allowed in Orthodox Altars, sang a prayer to the Virgin Mary which included swearing. Sinning there. and had their backs to the Altar, another disrespect. Imagine this happening in a Catholic church or a Muslim mosque. No one would be defending these girls if that was the case. Representation of American Art History

...The six works of American art that I have chosen all represent women. These paintings show how women were depicted by American artists. Some of the works of art show only women or children, while one of the portraits shows a couple. John Singleton Copley painted Portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mifflin (Sarah Morris). This is the only portrait that I have selected that shows both man and woman. I feel that these six works of art show the growth of how women were presented from 1671-1893. The works of art that I have selected are Mrs. Elizabeth Freake and Baby Mary(1671-74), Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mifflin(1773), The White Girl(1862), Miss Amelia Van Buren(1891), A Virgin(1892-93),and Lady Agnew of Lachnaw(1892-93. I believe that these paintings are similar in many ways, yet different as well. Anonymous, Mrs. Elizabeth Freake and Baby Mary, This painter, although unknown, can be attributed to half-dozen portraits that were painted in Boston. This colonial painter shows their knowledge of traditional British portraiture that is derived from representations of Elizabeth I. As you can see by looking at this painting, this artist gave more attention to the clothing that Mrs. Elizabeth Freake is wearing then to Mrs. Freake’s characteristics. This portrait was done in oil on a 42 ½ X 36 ¾ “ canvas. One way that I feel that this painting is different than the other paintings is that it is a pendant portrait. This was painted to hang next to the portrait of Mr. Freake. These paintings...

Well, I do not expect that the Rector is like Jesus. So the Rector gave us a word of encouragement. Just go to the Hospital and smile. So we went to the Hospital and the moment we entered into the ward, we were chased away by the patient. I felt discourage at that time, but not strong enough to pull me down. The second time we went, I brought Mother Mary and St Joseph together with me so that we will not be chased away again. So it does. Mother Mary and St Joseph help us through the day. Kirk Clark Birth Of An Angel Analysis

...Artist, Kirk Clark, created a marvelous 2-D artwork in the religious category; it represents the positive and negative people of same sex marriage. This art piece is called Birth of an Angel (BA) at Beyond Arts Gallery in downtown Harlingen, Texas. Kirk Clark was born right here in the valley in McAllen, Texas and studied sculpture and drawing in the mid-60s, graduating from The University of New Mexico. As already stated this piece is a 2-D artwork done marvelously. There are so many vibrant colors on the top symbolizing heaven yet dark colors on the bottom symbolizing earth. These colors are formed in wiggly lines all around the painting, but one part of the painting forms an angel in a cool color of silver. One pattern you can see is in the angel formed with silver lines and silver dots to notice the angel in the painting. The angel can be seen as very graceful and honorable in a religious evaluation. I believe this painting symbolizes the darkness our world has become. Heaven is the vibrant colors in the painting; our key to a better home. Our world has become so dark and cruel on so many levels. Some of our people hate on those for loving their same sex partner. Love is love no matter whom or what is may be. I believe God loves all his children no matter their mistakes or whoever they may love. Our world should see that no matter what God loves everyone so they should as well. Matthew 6:14-15 states “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive...

When focusing on three different types of topics that necessary to me and my life, I decided to choose the three that The topics I chose to write on are: Did Jesus need to be born of a virgin, 0 Why are personal testimonies important in sharing the gospel, and If a person is a Christian, or does it matter how they live their lives? Yes, in order for Jesus to die for our sins He had to go through the birth canal so that He could be of temptation and human flesh and overcome it without sin. I think that personal testimonies are important in sharing the gospel because who better to show or tell you what God can do, than someone who has experienced it themselves. Yes they are. When a person is a Christian, they have to have a normal attitude about themselves, that they are loving and caring people who are God loving. I. Section One Did Jesus need to be born of a virgin? Yes, in order for Jesus to die for our sins, He had to go through the birth canal so that He could be of temptation and human flesh and overcome it without sin. From the day He was born until the day He died, Jesus was without sin to be a perfect sacrifice. Since, we are born into the world as sinners, a miraculous entrance into the world was required, and that’s why the virgin birth occurred. “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to...

Mary Barnett Cse

...My Thoughts Regarding the Mary Barnett Case Amanda Feeley Westwood College Ethics and Critical Thinking Dr. Henderson 01 November 2010 My Thoughts Regarding the Mary Barnett Case There are a few reasons in why I have concluded that Mary Barnett is guilty for second-degree murder of her child, Alison. Those reasons include: awareness of right and wrong, selfishness, and neglect. First, I would like to recap the case of Mary Barnett and some of the main details of the crime that she committed. On January 23, the defendant, Mary Barnett, left Chicago to visit her fiancé in San Francisco. She left her six month old daughter, Alison, unattended in the apartment. Seven days later, Mary returned to her apartment to find her daughter dead, she died from dehydration. Mary called the police and told them that she had left the child with a baby sitter, but later changed her story and said that she knew Alison would die in a day or two, and that she did not intend on returning home. She was charged with second-degree murder: intentional murder without premeditation. If convicted, she could face up to eighteen years in prison (Chaffee, 2009, p. 65). Next, are the key testimonies of the witnesses that spoke against and on Mary’s behalf during her trial. The witnesses and their testimonies played a key part in my decision of a guilty, verdict, of Mary’s actions. Mary was mentally evaluated by two different psychiatrists; one was her own personal...

Portraits

...Jean Fouquet: Etienne Chevalier Presented by St. Stephen Van Eyck's realism soon enjoyed international renown. In Italy, Bartolomco Fazio extolled the Flemish artist in 1455/56 as the "prince of our century's painters". In France, too, where Burgundian art was already well known, the new style quickly won favour, becoming known as "la nou-velle pratique". Traces of its influence can be felt in the work of Enguerrand Charonton, and in the celebrated Pieta of Villeneuve-les-Avignon, painted c. 1470 by an anonymous master of southern France. The donor, whose face is realistically represented, is shown kneeling in an attitude of prayer at the bottom left of the Pieta. His white robe, as well as the attribute of oriental architecture (the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem) against a gold background, suggest he has travelled as a pilgrim to Jerusalem. The artist has given powerful dramatic expression to the grief of the mourners, and the intention to introduce the donor into their company seems obvious enough. Nevertheless, the gaze and gestures of the donor have not (yet) made any impression on the holy figures themselves, so that he remains outside their gestural narrative. Although part of the painting, the donor thus seems somewhat isolated within it. His gaze is intended to be directed towards the events taking place, but in order meet his patron's demands, the artist has painted him looking less into the centre of the painting than diagonally out of it. Etienne Chevalier's...
