“The Toleration Act, it was believed, was a way of providing protection for Catholics while at the same time representing a nod in the direction of the English government, which in 1649 and for a dozen years thereafter was firmly under the control of the English Puritans.” (Maryland). The Act allowed freedom of worship for all Trinitarian Christians in Maryland, but sentenced to death anyone who denied Jesus. This act came into creation because the Catholics started to feel pressure from the Protestants. The Catholics had become a religious minority so they had to create an act to protect themselves from any immediate threats. In today’s society creating an act because of different religious beliefs is unheard, it could also be considered religious discrimination. But the Catholics were in danger of being ill-treated by the Protestants, so they used their powerful political ties to protect themselves. This Act was supposed to bring them religious freedom.
