Mass Media Significantly Contributes to the Socialization Process The media has a lot of control over the socialization process. When one looks at the values of a society and one sees that the media has changed significantly over the past thirty years in terms of sexual content, sexual undertones, and violence. People have become numb to programs and reports that in the past would have created a stir. The media has helped to mold our social mores. When the media presents homosexuality in a more pleasant tone, persons have become more accepting of the stands. Rosie O'Donnell was aware of this when she aired her program about families of gay people on a cruise ship. It was addressed at helping to alter public opinion of what constitutes a family in the 21st century. News shows only present the information that will sell. The media operates on the support of sponsors. If an issue is not going to draw public interest, the media will not present it. The news media also reflects the opinions of the person's who create the news as a team. The fashion industry and product market functions on the media attitude that if the public identifies with a product it will sell. In order to sell products sexuality and music serve to entice the public. Yes, the media has a significant impact on the social values and mores in a society. AGENTS OF SOCIALIZATION IN U.S SOCIETY There are four major agents of socialization in the life of many people today. Those major agents are family, school, peers, and mass media. There are also two other agents called religion and workplace. Many people today live on the guidelines of these elements. Family is one of the most important agents ofsocialization. Having a family gives a person certain needs such love and nurture. Seeing that certain needs are made helps a child social, physical, and emotional growth for the society.

Marketing

...WHAT IS MARKETING? Marketing Focuses on Exchange One popular conception of marketing is that it primarily involves sales. Other perspectives view marketing as consisting primarily of advertising or retailing activities. For some of you market research, pricing, or product planning may have come to mind. While all these activities are part of marketing, it encompasses more than just these individual elements. The American Marketing Association defines marketing as the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational objectives. Effective marketing requires that managers recognize the interdependence of such activities as sales and promotion and how they can be combined to develop a marketing program. The AMA definition recognizes that exchange is a central concept in marketing. For exchange to occur, there must be two or more parties with something of value to one another, a desire and ability to give up that something, to the other party, and a way to communicate with each other. Advertising and promotion play an important role in the exchange process by informing consumers of an organizalion's product or service and convincing them of its ability to satisfy their needs or wants. Not all marketing transactions involve the exchange of money for a tangible product or service. Nonprofit organizations such as charities religious groups, the...

Intercultural Communication

...FACULTY OF MUSIC, SOCIAL SCIENCES, AND DESIGN January-April 2011 Subject name: Mass Communication Research Subject code: SM 312 Lecturers: Kenneth Teo Student ID: 1000922384 Topic : Benefits of learning intercultural communication to university student. Chapter 1 Introduction Background of the Study Anthropologist Edward T. Hall is the founder of intercultural communication during the 1951-1955 when he was at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of States. The scholarly field of intercultural communication was then mainly advanced by university-based scholars of communication in the United States and Japan, and in other countries. The development of intercultural communication in the U.S. and Japan is analyzed here. Intercultural communication is one of the most important communications and also a structure of global communication as the world today is characterized by an ever growing number of contacts resulting in communication between people with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This communication takes place because of contacts within the areas of business, military cooperation, science, education, mass media, entertainment, tourism but also because of immigration brought about by labour scarcity or political conflicts. Hence, there is communication which needs to be as constructive as possible, without misunderstandings...

Psi India

...9 -5 0 7 -0 3 2 REV: JULY 23, 2012 ELIE OFEK PSI India—Will Balbir Pasha Help Fight AIDS? (A) Every time Sanjay Chaganti, program director of HIV/AIDS Prevention at Population Services International (PSI) India, walked the streets of Mumbai's red-light district, he felt as though there was probably no other place like it in the world. Although dirty, crowded, and run-down, the district known for its brothels and the local Indian mafia was also a vibrant area that included shops, restaurants, and movie theaters. At any time of the day or night and at any time of the year, the redlight district was an area that was always alive and open for business. This particular afternoon in March 2002 was not unlike any other day in this area of Mumbai. To Sanjay and his colleagues at PSI, however, the red-light district of Mumbai was also ground zero for the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in India—something that the nonprofit organization was fully committed to prevent. Over the past 10 years, PSI had worked to educate sex workers in Mumbai about HIV and the significantly lower transmission rates that resulted from the use of condoms. It was estimated that there were between 20,000 and 30,000 sex workers within a 10-block area of the red-light district. Since roughly 85% of all HIV transmission in India occurred through intercourse with sex workers, for PSI the red-light district was a major battleground in the fight to prevent the spread of HIV. To reach as many sex workers...

...Customer Advocacy: A New Era in Marketing? Glen L. Urban have been active as a marketing researcher since 1964, or much of what Wilkie and Moore (2003) call Eras III and IV of scholarly research. The field of management science in marketing has grown in both scope and impact during this time. My work has been centered on new product development, with models from assessor to information acceleration. Most recently, I have been working on issues of trust, advice for consumers, and the discovery of new product opportunities by “listening in” to the online dialogue between a trusted advisor and a customer (Urban and Hauser 2004). Because I have done this recent work on the Internet, I sensed a sea change in the underlying consumer behavior. Something had shifted, and it took me a while to discover that customers had gained new power in buying decisions. Since 1950, marketing has been based on a push/ pull model in which the manufacturer designs a product to fill a need and then convinces the consumer to buy with aggressive advertising, promotion, and distribution tactics. The increase in customer power changes the equation, and I believe that this shift in the power relationship will define the dividing line between Eras IV and V of marketing. I call this new era “customer advocacy” because it is based on the firm representing the customers’ interest by providing them complete and unbiased information, advice on which product is best for them (including fair comparisons with competitors)...
