Company Background
RIM
Mike Lazaridis founded the wireless device company Research in Motion (RIM) in 1984 which has its headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario. Their best known product is the Blackberry handheld communication device. RIM not only produces the BlackBerry, but also develops its own software for its devices as well as developing and selling embedded wireless data components ("Research In Motion").
In 1999 the first BlackBerry was released. It used the same hardware as the Inter@ctive pager 950 - a pager RIM worked on with RAM Mobile Data and Ericsson. The first BlackBerry also ran on the Mobitex network which was developed by Ericsson and improved by RIM. The BlackBerry was the first device that solved the "two mailbox" problem. This describes the issue of having your mail on both your handheld device and corporate machine. Managing employees can be a daunting prospect. Many business owners started their businesses because they wanted to be their own boss, but what happens when there is a conflict of your interest versus the company policy – what kind of leader will you be, how will you juggle your business and the regulatory requirements of being the boss? While great leadership is often measured by your ability to lead and mentor your employees, it’s also important to remember that as an employer and manager you are required to treat all employees equally and fairly. This is something that Mr. Pedro Reyes failed to do when he took the responsibility that Ms. Amelia Rivera should have done as the head of the HR department. It was a gross disrespect on the part of Ms. Rivera. Mr. Reyes could have allowed Ms. Rivera to take action on the matter as it was the latter’s responsibility. https://www.coursehero.com/file/12214602/MBAcasetillwemeetagain/ 1/7 12/13/2015 MBA case ti...

...MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA) (Revised) 1. The Program: The importance of „management‟ as a professional study can today be compared with that of obtaining a normal graduate degree in order to be called educated. It is just short of becoming a compulsion. Businesses and institutions are growing in complexity and size. They are cutting across space and time by embracing technology, globalization and information. Mere operational efficiency is no more sufficient. Managerial capabilities have become necessary for firms to act on a global platform. Although there are a large number of institutions offering MBA programs, many of them just churn out non employable MBAs. A good institute must incorporate what the industry requires with changing times. The SMU way to Management degree or diploma is to mould the learning towards this objective. With this perspective it has introduced several programs which are geared to meet the industry requirement. These areas are Banking, Information System, Retail Operations and Healthcare. It is planning to offer more programs in the field of environment, disaster management, and media. The master of business administration (MBA) is an integrated program designed to provide an advanced program in management for those seeking managerial positions in industry, commerce and services. The core subjects are aimed at developing knowledge and skills in fundamental management disciplines. The program also involves participation in group work with...

...www.platinumgmat.com | Free GMAT Prep GMAT Practice Questions | GMAT Study Guide | MBA Admissions GMAT AWA Sample Essay Analysis of An Argument "The recent surge in violence in the southern part of the city is a result of a shortage of police officers and an absence of leadership on the part of the city council. In order to rectify the burgeoning growth of crime that threatens the community, the city council must address this issue seriously. Instead of spending time on peripheral issues such as education quality, community vitality, and job opportunity, the city council must realize that the crime issue is serious and double the police force, even if this action requires budget cuts from other city programs." In the argument above, the author concludes that the city council is not doing its job well and needs to focus on expanding significantly the police force in order to combat recent growth in the level of crime. The premise of the argument is that crime is expanding while the city council focuses on ostensibly unrelated matters such as education reform. However, the argument is flawed because it falsely assumes that the city council’s efforts to improve quality of life are entirely unrelated to levels of violence and it assumes that the crime problem can be solved by merely increasing the police force. First, the argument wrongly assumes that issues of educational opportunity, community vitality, and job availability have no bearing on crime. However, the author fails...
