Gender Pay Argument

...politicians have endorsed the statistic. Furthermore, this statistic is supported by the World Economic Forum that “there is no country on earth where women make as much as men for the same work” (Annese). In addition, in the World Economic Forum’s 2016 Global Gender Gap Report “it would take another 170 years to close the global pay gap between men and women” (Annese). However, it is difficult for women to close the wage gap. Women have a harder time negotiating their wage because if they barter they are seen as too aggressive (Sandberg 201). According to Sheryl Sandberg in the article “Why I Want Women to Lean In” (2013) the reason women have a harder time negotiating wages is that “success and likability are positively correlated for men and negatively correlated for women” (201). People generally see success as making a lot of money (Sandberg 201). Yet when women make a lot of money, they are seen as less likable and too aggressive (Sandberg 201). On the other hand, there is a great deal of evidence against the wage gap existence. Many recent pieces of literature point out the flaws in the past studies on the gender wage gap. For example, Mark J. Perry from American Enterprise Institute points out there “is no gender wage gap, rather there’s a gender earnings gap.” An earnings gap is different from a wage gap in that an earnings gap means that women do tend to make less than men, but it has nothing to do with men and women doing the same exact work or job (Perry).
