The intent of this paper is to display the scope of the question “what is reality?” in relation to Plato’s arguments in ‘The Republic’ and the theories and inferences put forth in the film ‘The Matrix’. I will discuss the extent to which reality may be more than what appears ‘real’ to us, and I will also address the logic behind the human desire for security through examination my own thought processes. In the Plato’s Cave scenario in The Republic, the prisoner who is freed from his shackles is taken from his own world, the world as he has always known it and lead to enlightenment through the discovery of a new, better world. He is coming from a place where he is happy in his knowledge of his surroundings. When he is shown the world as it really is, he is leaving what he once believed was the only version of reality. He is shown that what he has experienced in the Cave was governed by other forces. As people, we are both enlightened and unenlightened on this matter. What is to say that we are not the prisoner? ...The world we live in is most certainly real, discordant, and unharmonious so we tend to make disillusioned realities in our minds as a means of survival. Plato’s writing suggested that the perception of the prisoner’s reality of the cave was deception of what reality is like and the light that personified the truth; the prisoners were blinded by fallaciousness of their own silhouettes of observations. In the Bible it states that the truth will always reveal itself in the darkness and that’s exactly what happened when one of the prisoners was released and pushed out into the world. He came back and told his friends what reality was like; he found his friends to be disenchanted by their own notions and could not make sense of it all. Descartes wrote that all that he knew from childhood was all falsehood conviction and no real honesty no substantial entity to grasp onto. He was lost until the light that indicates candor had shown him the way; Descartes found out that his own senses misled him to dishonesty so in concordance he only believes what he sees. It is a shame that we do not tap this rich source more often in our daily conversation to express ourselves more clearly and precisely. There are of course thesauruses but they mainly list common words. Other vocabulary books list difficult, esoteric words that we quickly forget or feel self-conscious using. However, there is a bounty of choice words between the common and the esoteric that often seem be just on the tip of our tongue. Vocabulary 4000 brings these words to the fore. Whenever possible, one-word definitions are used. Although this makes a definition less precise, it also makes it easier to remember. Many common words appear in the list of words, but with their less common meanings. For example, the common meaning of champion is “winner.” A less common meaning for champion is to support or fight for someone else. (Think of the phrase “to champion a cause.”) This is the meaning that would be used in the list. As you read through the list of words, mark any that you do not know with a check mark.
