Week 8 Assignment 2 Mattel designs, manufactures, and markets a broad variety of toy products worldwide through sales to its customers and directly to consumers. Mattel’s business is dependant in great part on its ability each year to redesign restyle, and extend existing core products and product lines, to design and develop innovative new products and product lines, and successfully market those products and product lines. Mattel plans to continue to focus on its portfolio of traditional brands that have historically had worldwide appeal, to create new brands utilizing its knowledge of children’s play patterns and to target customers and consumer preferences around the world. The objective of Mattel is to continue to create long-term stockholder values by generating strong cash flow and deploying it in a disciplined and opportunistic manner which is outlined in Mattel’s capital a investment framework. To achieve this objective, management has established these three overarching goals. The first goal is to grow core brands by continuing to develop popular toys that are innovative and responsive to current play patterns and other trends. Additionally, Mattel plans to pursue additional licensing arrangements and strategic partnerships to extend its portfolio of brands into areas outside of traditional toys. The second goal is to improve execution in areas including manufacturing, distribution, and selling. Mattel continues to focus on improving the efficiency of its supply chain using Lean supply chain initiatives. The objective of the Lean program is to improve the flow of processes, do more with less, and focus on the value chain from beginning to end. The third goal is to further capitalize on Mattel’s scale advantage. For example, as the world’s largest toy company, Mattel believes it can realize cost savings when making purchasing decisions based on a One Mattel philosophy. To be able to achieve the goals that Mattel wishes to achieve they will have to follow a strategic plan. First Mattel needs to make sure they have hired employees that will allow them to achieve their goals. Mattel needs to have target market and make and produce toys that will satisfy this market that will allow them to sell as many toys as possible. They also need choose materials that are high quality. Mattel’s HRM needs to make sure they have the technology that is up to date and efficient. Make sure employees are also having continuous training and development so they have an understanding of the goals of Mattel as well. HRM also needs make sure there is a rewards program for their employees so that they have committed and competent employees. Also Mattel needs to make sure that all their production sites are operating on current safety standards. That the employees are being compensated and rewarded properly for the work they do. All of these things are measureable. The audit approach appears to be the best fit. The audit approach focuses on reviewing the various outcomes of the HRM functional areas by evaluating key indicators and customer satisfaction. Things that would be measured under this type of approach would be staffing, equal employment opportunity, compensation, benefits, training, performance management, safety, labor relations, and succession planning. With the use of electronic employee databases and information systems has made it much easier to collect, store, and analyze the functional indicators. It is also important that employees will have direct contact with HRM. This can be achieved through arranged office visits, email, or phone calls. Surveys will also be given to employees so that the company can see their side of how they believe things are going.
