Identity has always seemed scary to me. It has always been something that made me feel uncomfortable because I have never known what my personal identity is or represents. I know that an identity is something gathered and put together over time; like a puzzle. According to Matthew McCarty in his article Why Your Heritage is Important “Heritage, whether it be national, cultural, or family is an endowment of unique sets of historical knowledge; but foremost; heritage is your history.” For me, this means that my heritage is the values and behaviors that have developed within my family: independence, a wicked sense of humor, and the importance of hard work.

Though being difficult and strenuous I am eternally grateful for living with an independent and supportive woman like my mom. Having a family like I do has helped me become independent and individualistic myself. Growing up without a father figure in the house and it just being my mother, brother and I; I have always had to be able to take care of myself. My brother moved out at 18 and he is 9 years older than me so when I was 11 and mom would work until late I would go to my friends house after school and hang out with them until late then skateboard home when my mom would call. Even as a kid I feel like I lived the same sort of way as I do now. I did laundry, cooked dinner, walked to and from school, go to the store. My mother let me live with independence and freedom while still being under her watch. And this way of life was just like my mom’s when she was a kid.
