The Calm Before the Storm
About five and a half years ago, on May 8th, 2009, damaging winds and scattered tornadoes took place in southeast Missouri and in southern Illinois. When people came out of shelter to see all the damage that the storm had done, they were in shock. Most people say that the May 8th storm was an “inland hurricane,” it wasn’t. Although the May 8th storm did have several small tornadoes, does not mean that it was an inland hurricane. An inland hurricane has different characteristics than what actually took place on this hectic day. The damage it did to the citizens, cities, and counties, both health wise and financial wise, was very devastating.

A derecho is a line of intense, and fast-moving windstorms that move across a large area and is distinguished by damaging winds. “Many experts and NWS meteorologists considered this to be one of the worst derechos and MCVs in the past decade.” According to Wikipedia. The storms formed overnight on May 7th in Kansas, and it moved quickly through Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois. The storm is still being study to find the real cause, but it is said that a few of the tornadoes occurred within a coma head. It is said that a research case in the 1980’s documented a case of a derecho in Illinois, and that tornadoes would be associated with it. The derecho traveled over a thousand miles in just twenty-four hours. The derecho had a very unusual sized bookend vortex, which made this storm very unique. An average vortex is 12 nm in diameter, this one was between 30 and 40 nm in diameter. It was one of the largest vortexes to ever be seen. The wind gusts were super high that day. The automated system failed after the winds hit 81 mph, and it is said …show more content…
County management emergency agencies were getting calls reporting damage right after the storm went through. The storm took many peoples lives, it caused a ton of injuries, and did millions of dollars in damage. The damage was widespread throughout Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois. Flash Floods were widespread and did a bunch of damage itself. Bridges, and concrete fixtures, low-lying roads, and culverts were taken out by the high waters. The excessive rain shut down many highways, and roads. Barriers had to be put up in some county’s due to all the rain. Schools and businesses were being closed due to flooding. Things as simple as tree limbs were killing people. Roofs were flying off buildings, cars were drifting off the road due to currents, cars were overturning, power lines were falling, it was all a huge disaster. Peoples homes were falling apart and being destroyed, leaving some people without a place to stay. Tornadoes were flipping peoples homes, and or carrying them away. Metal beams from buildings were flying and hitting people and crushing cars, and trees were being flattened and uprooted by the high powered winds. Towns had to call water rescue’s due to the amount of water flooding that was flooding the streets. SIU Carbondale was hit pretty hard. One hundred windows were blown out of the school, and the damage was extensive. There were many electrical outages everywhere. In some towns, power was not

The cool crystal clear water of the springs range in depth from just inches to five feet and maintains a 72 degree temperature. Wekiva means "flowing water" in Creek. The spring flows from a small 20 feet deep cavern, which spreads into a deep cave. This area was once populated by the Timucuan Indians. Wekiva is home to an array of wildlife that includes foxes, river otters, white-tailed deers, Florida bear, great blue herons, great egrets, alligators, and a variety of tropical birds. The aquatic preserve is also the winter home of over 325 West Indian manatees, which is a federally protected species ("Wekiva Spring", 2012). This paper will discuss the springs and the associated agriculture, effects of human population on the spring, sustainability, risk and benefits of nonrenewable and renewable resources, and the sustainability and conservation of Wekiva Springs. Identify Associated with Agriculture The associated topic linked with Florida's agricultural life cycle is a resource located in the central part of Florida. ...circumstance, for me this inability to always be in control is a difficult concept. You see, I am an ex-professional athlete in a high-risk sport, motocross. In motocross we like to believe that as we train and prepare we gain control of all situations and when things go north this preparation will allow us to control the uncontrollable. The difficult truth to accept is that although preparation diminished unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstances, it doesn’t eliminate them and when something goes wrong. It goes really wrong. I, like many people will never come to accept that we can’t control certain circumstances and will continue to prepare ourselves and to train ourselves in hopes of controlling the uncontrolled. As crazy as this may seem however, it is people like us that develop equipment, strategies, movements and technology to get us closer to control. It is their relentless conviction to not take no for an answer that today saves thousand of life in many impossible situations with advancement such as protection and training in sports, therapy and diagnosis for emotionally unstable individuals, schools for children with disabilities and without a doubt warning and anticipation of natural phenomena situations. ...PROJECT POSTMOTERM REPORT DUBAI PALM ISLAND PROJECT Action Items (Lessons Learned) 3 The JCXSK Group Dubai Palm Island Project Postmortem Report BACKGROUND The Palm Jumeirah is a large artificial island built off the coast of Dubai that contains residential, leisure and entertainment facilities. Between 2001 and 2004, it was the world’s largest and most ambitious project of its kind, involving over 25km2 of new land being created and extending Dubai’s beaches by about 78 km; twice the size of Dubai’s natural coastline. The Palm Jumeirah takes the shape of a palm tree and is divided into three main sections: the trunk, which is 1.9km long and 500m wide is considered the “hub” of the palm because it consists mostly of commercial, retail and hotel infrastructure. The fronds and the spine are attached to the trunk and extend into the sea laterally. They vary in length from 600m to 2km and mostly contain residential villas. Then there is the crescent, an elliptical shaped island surrounding the Palm that acts as breakwater offering shore protection on its outer side and contains luxury hotels and beaches. In the summer of 2001, construction began with 4 dredgers, a fleet of 9 barges, 10 floating cranes, 40 pieces of heavy equipment, and 15 tugboats. The breakwater core was built with seabed sand and erosion was prevented by placing interlocking rocks on it up to 3m above sea level. Divers were sent constantly to ensure the breakwater was in place and standing firm. The project...

...was used as a currency. Used as both an industrial metal and a hard asset, it plays double duty in the commodities market. It has also become an investment vehicle which provides a safe haven from the unpredictable stocks and bonds. Trading it and predicting its price is a careful balancing act between what consumers need and what the currency market demands. The objective of the paper is to study the demand and supply mechanism for the silver market. Due to the dynamic nature of the market, the demand and supply forces keep changing due to various reasons; the author has tried to find the same. The author has further tried to study the implications of the demand and supply on the price trends. The research and analysis primarily gives a broad description of the current trends in the market for silver. The paper examines only the spot prices and the study does not include future market. The paper tries to examine how India is a part of the global market. After establishing a link between international and domestic silver market, the paper looks at the price trends beginning from 2005. Statistical Databases

...Statistical Databases Jaideep Srivastava and Hung Q. Ngo, Department of Computer Science, University of Minnesota, 200 Union street, EE/CS Building, room 4-192, Minneapolis, MN 55455 e-mail: srivasta, hngo @cs.umn.edu, ¡   1 Introduction A statistical database management system (SDBMS) is a database management system that can model, store and manipulate data in a manner well suited to the needs of users who want to perform statistical analyses on the data. Statistical databases have some special characteristics and requirements that are not supported by existing commercial database management systems. For example, while basic aggregation operations like SUM and AVG are part of SQL, there is no support for other commonly used operations like variance and co-variance. Such computations, as well as more advanced ones like regression and principal component analysis, are usually performed using statistical packages and libraries, such as SAS [1] and SPSS [2]. From the end user’s perspective, whether the statistical calculations are being performed in the database or in a statistical package can be quite transparent, especially from a functionality viewpoint. However, once the datasets to be analyzed grow beyond a certain size, the statistical package approach becomes infeasible, either due to its inability to handle large volumes of data, or the unacceptable computation times which make interactive analysis impossible. With the increasing sophistication of data collection instrumentation...

Hadopp Yarn

...ubiquitous usage has stretched the initial design well beyond its intended target, exposing two key shortcomings: 1) tight coupling of a specific programming model with the resource management infrastructure, forcing developers to abuse the MapReduce programming model, and 2) centralized handling of jobs’ control flow, which resulted in endless scalability concerns for the scheduler. In this paper, we summarize the design, development, and current state of deployment of the next generation of Hadoop’s compute platform: YARN. The new architecture we introduced decouples the programming model from the resource management infrastructure, and delegates many scheduling functions (e.g., task faulttolerance) to per-application components. We provide experimental evidence demonstrating the improvements we made, confirm improved efficiency by reporting the experience of running YARN on production environments (including 100% of Yahoo! grids), and confirm the flexibility claims by discussing the porting of several programming frameworks onto YARN viz. Dryad, Giraph, Hoya, Hadoop MapReduce, REEF, Spark, Storm, Tez. 1 Introduction...

Impact of Communication Technology on Our Private 7 Public Lives

...And people apply these criticisms to children across a broad economic spectrum, to children from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as to children from the middle and affluent classes. These words, taken from a 1997 Public Agenda survey and confirmed by a 1999 follow-up study, are disheartening.1 But while we may experience shock and disappointment when reading the results of these studies, few of us are surprised. These results are part of a larger story about young people — how we view their roles and the expectations we have of them — and are indicative of a larger narrative that casts many young people as less than full citizens. In effect, we, as a society, are telling young people that they lack the capacity to play meaningful roles in our communities. This story — this pattern of low expectations — is endemic rather than epidemic. It exists steadily and lastingly, rather than temporarily. This story is part of our folkways: we can find examples from Renaissance France, a newly independent United States, and last week’s newspaper. We can trace the story back to the psychological theories of Freud, Erickson and others that emphasize the sturm und drang (storm and stress) of adolescence, and to a shifting economy that has left older adolescents with few clear roles in their communities. Negative perceptions of young people are nothing new. But the most recent iteration of this historical pattern is particularly troubling. A 2000 Gallup poll confirms our suspicions:...

...accommodate the many mobile devices. Mobile computing and social networks are part of the daily lives of millions of Americans. 42% of American adults own a mobile and tablet computing device. “Additional research shows that about three quarters of U.S. adults are online, with about 66% of them using social networking sites” (Brenner, 2012). Specific methods for how IT departments and mobile app developers and designers can decide on supporting different mobile platforms like the Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, Windows Phone, or Android supported smartphones and tablets will be discussed. Other topics addressed in this paper include the issue of “high availability” for mobile app users’ Based on these considerations organizations and businesses are nowadays focusing on the implementation of these applications, while replacing their desktop platforms to the mobile devices (Shih, et.al. n.d). “On the other hand, it is also observed that, these applications may also enhance various risks and vulnerabilities, regarding the security and confidentiality of customer’s and organizational information. In this scenario, it is necessary for the organizations to introduce and implement effective strategies in order to ensure the integrity of their organizational operations” (Kalil, 2009). These data could assist airport management in predicting periods of flight delay. Design/methodology/approach: Data were taken and analyzed from the data base “Research and Innovation Technology Administration” (RITA) for the years 2005-2011 for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The data included 2.8 million flights originating and departing from this airport. Data were also gathered from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) showing precipitation. Additional data were gathered from the FAA regarding delay causes, number and types of delays and changes to the infrastructure of ATL airport. Findings: There is a repeatable annual pattern of delays...

Adsorption of Lead (Ii) Ion Clay Using Clacined Okada Clay

...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY Removal of heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, nickel, chromium and copper from aqueous solution is necessary because of the hazardous effect it does on the environment ,thereby making environmental protection important, however waste solutions containing heavy metal elements need treatment systems that can remove these contaminants effectively (Harvey and Chantawong, 2001). Frequent appearance of these metals in waste streams from many industries, including electroplating, metal finishing, metallurgical, tannery, chemical manufacturing, mining and battery manufacturing. This problem has received considerable attention in recent years, primarily due to the concern that those heavy metals in waste streams can be readily adsorbed by marine animals and directly enter the human food chain, thus presenting a high health risk to consumers (Lin et al., 2000). A number of technologies for treating contaminated effluents have been developed over the years. The most important of these techniques include chemical precipitation, filtration, ion- exchange, reverse osmosis and membrane systems. However, all these techniques have their inherent advantages and limitations in application. In the last few years, adsorption has been shown to be an alternative method for removing dissolved metal ions from liquid wastes (Bayat, 2002). The removal of heavy metal ions from industrial wastes using different adsorbents is currently...

Business Ethics

...Nicholas David Bowman Michigan State University Online Publication Date: April 26, 2008 Journal of Media Psychology, V 13, No. 2, Spring, 2008 Abstract With the growing popularity of online video games, there have been anecdotal reports suggesting that these games are highly addictive, with some gamers spending in excess of 40 to 50 hours per week playing. Thus, research into the individual characteristics that lead to excessive play is warranted. This paper examines two individual variables – personality and perceptions of media – and explores how they relate to online game play, specifically online game addiction. By presenting a revised metric for online game addiction, this paper explores the relationship between addiction and both personality and perception. Online addiction is presented in this paper as a process addiction with four unique factors: perceived social sanctions, excessive play, uncontrollable play, and displacement. Both personality and perception are found to be significantly associated with online game addiction. These results are interpreted and discussed, and future research direction is suggested. Keywords: online game addiction, Big Five personality traits, media perception, MMOs Perception and Addiction of Online Games as a Function of Personality Traits Computer games as a leisure activity have become an ever-increasing part of many young people’s day-to-day lives (Griffiths & Davis, 2005; Durkin, 2006).
