...Maya Angelou was born as Marguerite Ann Johnson, in Saint Louis Missouri. Her parents were Bailey and Vivian Baxter Johnson. Maya parents divorced and she and Brother Bailey Jr. had to live with her father's mother, Mrs. Annie Henderson, in stamps, Arkansas. Maya was sexually abused and raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Mr. Freeman. Maya told her mother what he had done to her. And that same night he was beaten to death by a mob of man. The Shock made Maya mute because she thought that her voice was the cause of his death and so the children were sent back to live with their grandparents once again. Her teacher Bertha Flowers helped to talk again. She dropped out of school to become San Francisco’s first African American female cable car conductor....

...Maya Angelou, along with writing poetry, was a civil right activist and produced most of her poems from the late 1960’s until the early 2000’s. Because of her involvement in the Civil Rights movement and the time period in which she lived, almost all of her poems are about common instances of that time. The message of most of these poems relate to social issues that developed during the middle to late 1900’s, whether they pertain to race, gender, or other matters. These poems are a way of informing people of those issues and hopefully able to cause a change. Some of Maya Angelou’s works address more than one problem and have many different interpretations while others have a more straightforward way of revealing their meaning to the reader. She writes from a certain perspective so that most people can understand the poem’s message and central idea....

..."I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is the chronicle of Maya Angelou's youthful exodus from victim to victor. In simple terms, Maya Angelou was an African-American woman, brown like me, who found her voice not only in words but in truth. She eloquently, brilliantly, and with high sensitivity expressed the harsh reality of her life experiences yet infused her readers with power, strength, realization, and infinite hope. It is truth that Dr. Maya Angelou helped save my young life... I was again fortunate to become acquainted with her family. When I encountered - or rather rushed to meet - Dr. Angelou alone at the elevator of the lobby where she'd just spoken at an HRC event, I stumbled over my words. Maya Angelou was truly a sight to behold... Luxuriously tall, and big, and broad... and that voice! That powerful radiantly soft and strong voice... I got to hear that voice again....

...Diversity and Prejudice in America Alycia Toth Eth/125 Professor Nowinski “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” Maya Angelou said these famous words and she could not have been more accurate. Discrimination and hate are not going away anytime soon but educating our youth on history, diversity, and prejudice could very well be the key to coming closer to the end. First I would like to discuss what I have learned from this class about diversity, discrimination, and prejudice. Honestly I had a general idea of what these three words meant but overall I was not entirely clear on their meaning let alone the severity of them in America. Like most people I was aware of the Civil Rights Movement and Act and knew that African American endured quite the challenge of gaining their rights and freedom but reading the text I was able to understand more of what happened and the challenges overcome. Also, from the text I was able to see that African Americans were not the only ones who faced prejudice and discrimination. So many people, me included, tend to not think about what woman, disabled people, and many other races have gone through to earn the same rights as everyone else. This class really opened my eyes and let me see how I was not seeing the “whole picture” and was not educating myself to help others. I am a Caucasian female and did not notice discrimination or hate around me due to the fact that I...

...“Let's tell the truth to people. When people ask, 'How are you?' have the nerve sometimes to answer truthfully. You must know, however, that people will start avoiding you because, they, too, have knees that pain them and heads that hurt and they don't want to know about yours. But think of it this way: If people avoid you, you will have more time to meditate and do fine research on a cure for whatever truly afflicts you.” ( Maya Angelou, Letter to My Daughter). This paper will talk about whether honesty is always the best policy. Honesty is always the best policy unless in certain situations like when someone else's feelings are at stake, personal protection, and self preservation. “ I have three children - how may I teach them to walk...

...Implementing Change in Organizations (Shift Happens) Research Paper MGT6681 Abstract As one of the key lessons in the book Who Moved My Cheese? points out, “change happens”; in fact, change may be the only constant in our lives. Some people thrive on change; others will avoid it at all costs – even if it costs them their livelihood. Because change is one of the major problems causing conflict and dissention in the organization’s most valuable resource, its employees, this paper will review some of the possible causes of resistance to change and how to overcome them. Specifically, this research will focus on these particular aspects of implementing change within an organization: Why change? Who avoids change, and why? How to overcome resistance and implement change. Nothing endures but change. Heraclitus Why Change? Possibly one of the biggest problems with implementing a change in an organization is the fact that employees may view the change as unnecessary. As an example, The Farm Bank case (Brown/Harvey, 2006) illustrates how change can go wrong when it isn’t analyzed for its costs vs. benefits, well-planned – beginning to end, or even needed to begin with. In this case analysis, the CEO decides that the company needs to implement a new MIS program to assist with increased productivity, long-term planning, and decision making. Although he has good intentions, he dives right into the project and even creates a new management position for...

...Final Project: Persuasive Research Paper Nycole Chatman COM/220 October 28, 2012 Debbi Kutner Reducing Recidivism in today’s Society Final Project: Persuasive Research Paper Reducing Recidivism in today’s Society Education and job skills are key elements to reducing recidivism therefore; prisons, county jails, and the probation offices should adopt mandatory programs so ex-offenders can become productive members of society. Every year approximately 9 million people are released from prison in the U.S. (Center, T. N.-e., 2012) and due to lack of education and job skills, 52% of those 9 million returns within three years. According to Yamatani & Spjeldnes (2011), “The United States represents only 5 percent of the world’s population, but we hold 25 percent of the world's inmates in our prisons and jails (Pew Center on the States, 2008). We have more people behind bars in total numbers and per capita than any other industrialized country--2.3 million out of nearly 300 million (750 per 100,000 residents)--one out of 100 U.S.” This essay will show the difference between recidivism and rehabilitation as well as showing how education and job training can effectively reduce the rate of recidivism in the U.S. What is recidivism you ask? The Merriam-Webster defines recidivism as a tendency to relapse into a previous condition or mode of behavior (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2012)...

...African American Women Under Slavery This paper discusses the experiences of African American Women under slavery during the Slave Trade, their exploitation, the secrecy, the variety of tasks and positions of slave women, slave and ex-slave narratives, and significant contributions to history. Also, this paper presents the hardships African American women faced and the challenges they overcame to become equal with men in today’s society. Slavery was a destructive experience for African Americans especially women. Black women suffered doubly during the slave era. Slave Trade For most women who endured it, the experience of the Slave Trade was one of being outnumbered by men. Roughly one African woman was carried across the Atlantic for every two men. The captains of slave ships were usually instructed to buy as high a proportion of men as they could, because men could be sold for more in the Americas. Women thus arrived in the American colonies as a minority. For some reason, women did not stay a minority. Slave records found that most plantations, even during the period of the slave trade, there were relatively equal numbers of men and women. Slaveholders showed little interest in women as mothers. Their willingness to pay more for men than women, despite the fact than children born to enslaved women would also be the slaveowners’ property and would thus increase their wealth. Women who did have children, therefore, always struggled with the impossible conflict...
