Introduction
Being underprivileged is not a justification of committing misdemeanour. Most criminals have an excuse that they commit crime just because they did not get a probability to go to school, which is not a high-quality thing to do. It is a well-known piece of evidence that there are certain circumstances behind people committing crimes. In most cases people who commit crimes were fatalities of other types of crimes before. There are different types of crimes, but I am going to centre on one type of contemporary crime, which is serial murder, and I will also not forget to look at the incidence, nature, causes and lessening and prevention measures also of serial murder.
Understanding Serial Murder/ conceptualisation
“South African criminal law defines murder as the unlawful and intentional killing of another person”, Bezuidenhout (2011). In other words the killing must be unlawful in order to be defined as murder. The perpetrator may not be found guilty of murder if she/he claims it was self-defence. Bezuidenhout (2011) , also emphasis that the killing also has to be intentional in order to be labelled as murder. For example if sixteen people die in a car accident. The tax driver may be guilty for not driving like he is expected but he the killing may not be defined a murder.
There are many different types of murder, but I will focus on Serial murder. “Serial Murder is defined as the killing of multiple victims over the period of time ranging from days or weeks to months” Adler et al (1996). Adler et al, also emphasis that Serial murders have a minimum of three to four victims. All serial murders turn to have many things in common.“Serial murders tend to be highly mobile in order to minimise the likelihood of establishing links between the murder they commit between various geographic”, Addler (1996). It has been argued by Burchell and Milton (2007), that many criminals are below-average intelligence. I think it is a different case when it comes to serial killers, because most of them plan before killing someone and them also enjoy manipulating the victims. They can promise those jobs, and those who are unemployed can be their targets.
The Incidence
“Taking the life of a person is often described as the most serious form of harm that one human may inflict on another”, Addler et al (1996). In most case serial murders kill others because of anger and bitterness inside them. Some of them claim that they kill other to teach them a lesson which is something that does not make sense. Hickey (2002) argues that criminals diverge in terms of being organised or not when doing crime. Some criminals are smart in such a way that they can easily manipulate others, and others fail to do so, they use force when committing crimes. When it comes to serial killers, we have those murders who are well-organised and those who are not well-organised.
Organised murders posses in most cases characteristics like, high intelligent, high birth-order status, masculine image, charismatic, social competent, sexual capable, occupationally mobile, lives with a partner, geographical mobile, experienced harsh discipline, controlled emotions during murder, high interest in media response to crime, and model inmate in prison. Bezuidenhout (2011) argues.
Bezuidenhout (2011), stated valid points about serial murder I can easily agree with him by looking at some example of serial murder. Moses Sithole was very smart, and he also used ideas you can think of. He used to meet a victim several times before killing her. First he would tell her that he has a job for her, and sometimes he may even ask a victim to apply for the job. This is just a prank because the answer is always the same every day. The next few days he would make an appointment with her, and tell her the “good news”, and he would say “your application was impressive, and you finally got the job”. Serial murders like Moses Sithole who are high intelligent do not rush thinks, they are so calm, but inside they are burning.
They always make sure that they have gained trust from the victim, and what is very interesting and confusing at the same time is that, they can even spend lot of money, buying things, booking hotel and also travelling with the victim. As they all choose, Serial killers choose those people who remind them the person he is angry with. So they will try to commit their first murder, and they are more likely to fail to do so because they are not use to it. They will try their best to make it perfect as results he will kill many people until he makes it perfect.
Normally people who become serial murders are normal those who did not get the attention or while when was still young. As a right they kill people to get the attention from the media and also from the state. They also make sure that they make it very difficult for polices to catch them, and that will make them feel good because they will feel like they have all the powers and they rule the world. Serial Killers can call the police and tell him or her that he is the one that everyone is looking for, and he can even tell him/her where he have left dead bodies to prove to them that he has the powers and police do not. There is a thin line between serial murders and serial rape. This is because in most cases people who found guilty of serial murders were also labelled as serial rape. So in other words that actually means that these people do not want to be caught. So they make sure that they do not live evidence behind, they first rape the victim and they kill her after. Some of serial murders have partners but their partners will know nothing about them being serial killers, and they are smart in such a way that their partners will not notice something. This is also a indication that serial killers choose who they want to kill, because one may ask him/herself that if they are real killers so why they do not kill their wives.
Nature
A large division that separates serial killers from other murderers are their motives to kill. Normally murders are committed due to arguments that variety from family affairs, gang violence, financial difficulties, and disputes between lovers and between friends. "A Serial killer, I should make clear, is not like any other murderer. A murderer has a dispute, a nice specific personal thing against his victim", Addler (2011). Unlike that of a normal homicide, serial killers are only driven by instinct and a desire to kill. Due to these sexual desires and the need to fulfil their arousing fantasies it often drives these individual to murder those who are complete strangers to them.
“Many of them are remarkably skilful in their presentation of self, so much so that they are beyond doubts and therefore are difficult to catch" Addler(2011). Mistaken is that some people may assume that serial killers wear hockey masks or walk around in pull ups carrying a chain saw. Movies, Newspapers and TV or media in general have put an image into our minds that these are the characteristics of a murderer when in reality they are masters at masking their emotions and thoughts letting them merge into the social order. Magicians of death, they roll their victims into a false sense of security by many times tricking them with an offer of jobs. Once they have control of their victims they remove their fake personality killing their victim with any weapon that they can find, fulfilling their wants, desires, and impulses.
CAUSES
Understanding how and why serial killers commit such dreadful crimes is an important step to stopping the murderous tear these serial murderers from going on. Scientists searched and found what is believed to be firm proof, that genetics is the key role in determining who becomes a serial killer, unlike criminologists and psychologists who argue that large events such as abuse and abandonment create the setting and foundation in which serial killers grow into cruel mass murders. Though both arguments are strongly proved and explained through research and statistics neither are individually the answer to why serial killers exist. In reviewing the evidence of both explanations I think that it is a mix of both genetics and cultural upbringings. Though many humans must deal with violent situations as children and experience terrible events many do not become mass murderers. It is true that many children who are victims of abuse become violent in their adult lives but I think to cross into the group of a serial killer one must be born with a different biochemical form.
Reduction and Prevention Measures
As I said, It is not easy to see that this is a serial killer, and no one ask to be a victim, but the safest way to not become the victim of a serial killer is to avoid them in the first place. No one wakes up every day with conscious thoughts of staying clear of a serial killer. However unlikely it is that you will be targeted by one, there are some guidelines recommended by different authors by Bromberg (2006), and I Also believe they can save someone else’s life. Bromberg (2006), spoke to the serial killers after being detained, Kolchak (2006)argues that
It is important that people trust their instincts. 82% of these murder victims were female, women who did not listen to their sixth sense in many cases and paid for it with their lives. If it does not feel right, then it probably is not. Better to be embarrassed for a few seconds than a statistic for the rest of time. According to figures, a serial killer uses a car 78% of the time. Half of those offer their unsuspecting targets a ride .People must avoid free rides. Once you do, your chances of being seen again alive are incredibly small. Serial killer can not only use tactics argued by Bromberg (2006), but they can use other tactics, so it is important to be extra careful. A serial can sometimes fake an injury to try to trap someone. A man can come to you needing help because he is "weaker" than you or injured. In most cases strangers starts to give people too much information in a conversation, “A liar often fills in what he perceives as holes in his story to try to be more convincing and familiar to you” Ramsland and Katherin (2009) argues.
Conclusion
In my conclusion, I think that nature does choose what character we are born with but at the same time these traits cannot be exposed without a device that triggers these individuals to commit these dreadful crimes. Without the arrangement of both natural genetic defects and the cultural nurturing in which humans are brought up in, serial killers cannot become cruel killers. If we can control domestic violence then the chances for a serial killer to become violent will decrease significantly making our world a safer place.
