I enjoyed listening to General Stanley McChrystal during the On Leadership at the Washington Post podcast. One of the comments that impressed me was when he received the question, “How do you tell if someone’s going to be (a) good combat commander?” General McChrystal’s response explained basically that a good commander had the skill set to develop and understand the balance point in gathering sufficient information to make a good decision, but not delay the course of action out of caution that prevents from making a timely decision. A previous supervisor by the name of Mitch Slaymaker had that skill which more accurately defined his leadership actions rather than traits.
