Introduction

McDonalds is the leading global foodservices retailer with more than 34,000 restaurants serving nearly 69 million people in 119 countries every day. But how did it get here?

Headquartered in the United States (Oak Brook, Illinois), the company began in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant in San Bernardino, California, operated by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald. In 1948, the brothers reorganised their business as a hamburger stand using production line principles. They produced a limited menu, concentrating on just a few items – burgers, fries and beverages – which allowed them to focus on quality at every step.

In 1954, Ray Kroc, a former multi-mixer salesman, discovered the restaurant after the brothers had placed an order for 8 multi-mixers to service their huge crowd. He was stunned by the effectiveness of their operation. At that time, Dick and Mac McDonald where looking for someone to help them franchise their restaurant all over the United States, and that is where Ray Kroc stepped in. He pitched his vision of creating McDonald’s Restaurants all over the North America to the brothers.

In 1955, Ray Kroc joined the company as a franchise agent, and founded the McDonald’s Corporation. The first ever McDonald’s restaurant opened on April 15th 1955, in Des Plaines, Illinois. Mr Kroc subsequently purchased the brothers’ equity in the company and led its worldwide expansion.

McDonald’s restaurants offer both counter service and drive-through service. A McDonald’s restaurant is operated either by a franchisee or the corporation itself. In Malta, the company is franchised by Hili Group and it employs around 550 people. The corporation’s revenue comes from the rent, royalties and fees paid by the franchisees as well as sales from company-operated restaurants.
