In the following table, we have data for two different years. The first 2 questions refer to this table. Year 2007 Year 2008 $20,000 $21,000 $1.25 $1.50 $2.00 $2.10 100 120 100,000 115,000 400,000 380,000 Price of 1 Automobile Price of 1 loaf of Bread Price of 1 cup of Coffee Number of Automobiles Produced Number of Cups of Coffee Produced Number of Loaves of Bread Produced 1. Using the year 2007 as the base year, compute the following statistics for each year: nominal GDP, real GDP, the GDP deflator (a Paasche price index) and the CPI (a Laspeyres price index). For the CPI, assume that the representative basket of goods is exactly the one produced in the year 2007 Answer: To calculate nominal GDP for 2007 is $20, 000 ∗ 100 + $1.25 ∗ 400, 000 + $2 ∗ 100, 000 = $2, 000, 000 + $500, 000 + $200, 000 = $2, 700, 000 for 2008 $21, 000 ∗ 120 + $1.50 ∗ 380, 000 + $2.1 ∗ 115, 000 = $2, 520, 000 + $570, 000 + $241, 500 = $3, 331, 500 To calculate real GDP for 2007, since 2007 is the base year real GDP 2007 equals $2,700,000 1 for 2008 just use the 2007 prices $20, 000 ∗ 120 + $1.25 ∗ 380, 000 + $2 ∗ 115, 000 = $2, 400, 000 + $475, 000 + $230, 000 = $3, 105, 000 The amount of stuff produced in 2008, at 2007 prices is the real GDP in 2008 To calculate the GDP deflator in both years simply divide Nominal GDP by Real GDP, so for...

Media Killed the Radio Star

...Media Killed The Radio Star By Jacqui Picone Marketing will be the end of rock and roll. It takes genuine talent and turns it into a messy, cheesy ball of annoyance that no one wants to hear. One Direction have exhibited this to a T. Marketing is why they are five very talented boys who; whilst it is undeniable they are the most popular band in the world right now; have a large base of what more dedicated fans refer to as Directionaters. Marketing has cut, polished and zip locked them into a bag of kiddy pop tunes that alienate a potential male fan base as well as any older listeners. I know that many (myself included) very quickly filed them away under a shame playlist, commonly graced with the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen and Wham! It’s only now I’ve begun to realise I was missing out on some proper raw talent. Since when has music been defined by the clothes the band wears and the brands they endorse? Why is it that a shirtless Adam Levine with a mediocre voice is selling more albums then The Black Keys? Marketing takes all that is good and pure about music and twists it into something plastic and fake. Musicians used to sell their souls to crossroad demons just to play the blues, now musicians sell their souls for a six-pack. Amps and stage dives have been replaced by awful dance routines and Pepsi commercials.  Do not mistake this for nostalgia, I have no time for it and do not mistake this for music snobbery. There are still people like Dave Grohl and Mark Hoppus who...

Drill or Not

...1 Music Censorship Kenyetta Daniel Sunday May 6, 2012 Kris Shaw 2 Would it be hard trying to picture the world without music, or thinking about someone telling you what you can listen to or sing in the privacy of your home? That is what it seems to have come down to. Censorship is what the government and others seems to think is hurtful and vulgar to society many have wonder if this is true or not. Many people have found themselves protesting censorship in music, is censorship in music too harsh for kids today. Censorship has been around since the time of Plato and has gone on through the centuries. In this country it was with the beginnings of rock and roll and has continued on today. Rock music is huge when it comes to censorship because of the allusion to sex, drugs, alcohol, and violence. The Government believes that profanity is what they need to censor people from, though the freedom of speech is a First Amendment right to all people. The Government sees it as what the average person would find offensive and lacks any serious value in literature, artistic, political, or scientific. It is the sexually explicit and violent material in the songs that makes it so a person has to be a certain age before they can buy a CD with this type of music. This is why many...

My Perfect Mate

...mate would be a girl that has the same interests as me. She would be into watching movies, athletics, and trying to help out others. The girl I would want would probably be much different than any that my parents would chose for me. My parents would want me to be with a girl that is educated, well off financially, and friendly. I don’t think I would let my parents chose a girl for me though, since that would be the girl that they would want, not the one that I am looking for. She’d be a brunette or blonde girl around the same age as me. She would be into the same things as me, like hiking, watching movies, mountain biking, and playing games. My perfect mate would be somewhat educated, so I wouldn’t have to making all the money for our household. I would want a girl that is athletic, so that she would work out with me, like taking morning jogs and walks. I would prefer her to be pretty. Also, I would want to do hobbies with her like hiking, biking, basketball, and other things. My perfect mate according to my parents would be much different than mine. They would want me to find a girl who is educated, well mannered, and friendly. They would probably prefer that I would marry an Indian, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I wouldn’t want to have girls narrowed down by race. But they wouldn’t mind if I did marry a girl of another race. They would want me to marry someone who is well off financially. Also, they’d want me to find a girl with a cultural background, which I...

What Does It Mean to Be Well Educated?

...What Does It Mean To Be Well-Educated? Greg Bonner Abstract To be well-educated mean more than the quality of the schools and colleges I attend. My education began with the sovereignty of God, the Creator. At birth my training and education began with my parents and care-givers. Throughout my life I was taught by those whom God had predestined for me as stewards, mentors and teachers. God created me in His image in every way. Divine wisdom, knowledge, and understanding are gifts inclusive of His image. I was and am increased in His knowledge through the nurturing and discipline of the Holy Spirit, our parents, teachers, and professors. To be well-educated expands further than the class rooms and curriculum of studies. My God given knowledge is released in “precept upon precept, and line upon line” in all that I do personally, academically, and otherwise (Isaiah 28:9-10 ESV). The best schools do not merit one to be well-educated. To be well-educated is forever learning, never ceasing to learn the knowledge of God in one’s self and others. What Does It Mean To Be Well-Educated? Reading Alfie Kohn’s article, “What Does it Mean to Be Well-Educated?” compelled me to answer the question. His article caused me to reflect and assess my own meaning of one being well-educated. My initial thought was that of academic and scholastic achievement. Being well-educated entails greater experiences than academic success. Life lessons, discipline, and...

Fiu Spring 2012 Productions

...Semester Productions Lucky for me, I had the privilege to sit through an intro to acting class this past semester that assigned me to watch two productions. It wasn’t until I took this class that I realized how talented the theatre department of my school is. It even made me sad that I hadn’t gone to any of its productions until now! I was pleasantly surprised by both plays and did thoroughly enjoy them, as I was a theatre student myself in middle and high school. In The Next Room was the first play I ever saw by FIU theatre and I really believe that the director did a great job executing the play. I was happy to see one of my own sorority sisters up on stage, Michelle Antelo as Mrs. Givings. She was able to project herself very well and kept me engaged with the play throughout the entire show. Antelo greatly contributed to the success of the show. Her acting made it easy for me to suspend my disbelief in order to successfully get involved with the given circumstances of the play. It was clearly noticeable the extra time she put into her character and there was much evidence of preparation. The blocking the actors used on stage was very well thought out and it was also noticeable that all involved equally did their part to make the show a success. Antelo’s character, Mrs. Givings was an emotional one in the play. Antelo’s fascinating was of embodying these emotions are what kept me engaged throughout. I bring up her projection again because to me, it was powerful and it was...

Why College Education Is Important to Me

...always been there for me. Throughout grade school, learning has enabled me to express my outlook on any matter in multiple ways. Whether, I was debating on an event in black history, leading an open forum on a best selling novel, or creating my own personal narrative. I was always able to actively express my interpretation of a subject in an ingenious manner. Based on my knowledge of the benefits of receiving an education, it has definitely increased the value of a college education to me. A college education is invaluable to me because my ancestors once fought for American Americans to receive an education, it will enhance my required technical skills, and it will profoundly expand my intellect. Unfortunately my ancestors faced many economical and social barriers that prevented them from being privileged to receive a college education. But they did not allow those obstacles to deter them from becoming educated. Not only is a college education significant to me because it is a privilege, but because it is a necessity as well. I learned that to be successful and to have more than a general knowledge on any area of interest, that one must gain a college education. Through being an active learner in my studies I noticed that education is to be treasured and not to be taken for granted. While many others feel that a college education is useless, I feel that it is actually advantageous. Primarily because I am aware that if my ancestors had not fought for me to gain access to an education...

It became a healthy outlet for me when I didn't feel comfortable sharing my emotions with another person. It was a place for me to express my thoughts without feeling self conscious.
