Media Review:
Me, Myself, and Irene Me, Myself, and Irene is a classic, and hilarious comedy that was released in 2000. It includes the amazing actors, Jim Carrey and Renée Zellweger. Jim Carrey plays a nice-guy cop, Charlie Baileygates, whom happens to have a split-personality disorder. Renee Zellweger plays a blonde, sweet woman wanted in her hometown for murder. Charlie sets out on an assignment to deliver Irene to the police station but instead wind up on the run from some corrupt police officers and a crazy ex boyfriend. During all these events Charlie loses his medicine subscribed by his doctor or help with his disorder, thus releasing Hank at the most inappropriate times. Charlie’s split-personality disorder began when his wife left him for their limousine driver, leaving him taking care of their three grown children. All this inner anger developed Charlie’s alter ego, known as Hank Evans. Hank is caused by advanced delusionary schizophrenia with involuntary narcissistic rage. Hank is the complete opposite of Charlie. Hank is crazy, and aggressive, more outspoken than Charlie but not in a good way. Charlie is assigned to escort Ms. Irene Walters to upstate New York where police wanted her in her hometown. Upon arrival Irene realizes that her ex-boyfriend is actually setting her up for murder. Charlie then takes her under his protection from the corrupt cops and crazy ex-boyfriend. In the middle of all this madness, his prescription that keeps his disorder under control is lost. Charlie and Irene are now on the run from both the police and the crazed boyfriend, not alone though. Hank makes his appearance at the worst possible times when Charlie’s medicine wears off. Despite his disorder along their hilarious journey together Charlie and Irene form a bond, Hank also has feelings for Irene. Irene has no feelings for Hank because she feels that his random appearances both disgust and terrify her. Charlie’s disorder gets in the way a lot along the way, one time Hank even had plastic surgery on Charlie’s face leaving both him and Irene in shock. Hank also makes his appearance when Irene and Charlie stop at a restaurant when he insulted Whitey, young albino waiter. Hank makes fun of Whitey, repulsing Irene. Later when Charlie has returned to his normal self he decides to apologize and talk to Whitey about the events that had taken place at the restaurant. That is when Whitey calmly recounts the story of how he brutally murdered his family with a hammer. You truly get to see how bad Charlie’s disorder is when he leaves the room to buy some sodas. While attempting and failing to obtain the sodas from the machine a man walks by mocking him. Hank returns to the room where he tells Irene that he may have suppressed Hank in his moment of anger, fully believing that he did. The next morning after finding out that Hank had sexual relations with Irene, Charlie walks outside and there you see the soda machine dent in with soda’s falling out of it. Hank had not been suppressed; in fact he had taken control that night. I had watched this movie many times before, probably more than twenty. Before I focused on the humor that Charlie’s disorder brought to the movie, but after watching the movie and focusing on the disorder itself you realize that this disorder would actually be devastating to a human being, not comical. Although I still find the movie completely hilarious, I empathize those who are fighting with this disorder. The disorder proved to be many obstacles in Charlie’s life. Between plastic surgery, insulting people, beating soda machines, and having sexual relations with the woman whom he loves, Hank was a burden on Charlie. Hank did come in handy in some cases, but one can imagine that Charlie would rather not have him. Although Charlie’s family was not shown in the movie, his children seemed to deal with his disorder well because they were not exposed to it. Irene proved otherwise because she was exposed to his disorder. Watching this movie again from a different view gave me a new perspective on this disorder. This movie did an excellent job portraying this disorder and showing what it can do to a person, both good and bad. If I was someone suffering from this disease I would be glad to be in this movie. I would want the humor to be brought out of my disorder, while still portraying the struggle that people with this disorder go through everyday and how it affects their everyday lives. The next twenty times I watch it I will be sure to be more aware and respectful of the disorder than beforehand.

Dissociative Identity

...Dissociative Identity Disorder Porsha Castillo Belhaven University ABSTRACT This paper will focus on the mental disorder Dissociative Identity Disorder. It will follow the case study of JANE. The paper will include the hisroty of the disorder as well as treatment, and current research of the disorder. Dissociative Identity Disorder Rebecca, a 14 year old girl, presented to a hospital by her mother with a complaint of ‘behaving like a male’ for past 2 weeks. She was identifying herself as Mr. S. and dressed herself like a male. She was not recognizing her neighbors, relatives, or teachers anymore and her belongings as well. She was not able to recount her personal information either. Her mother also reported a significant and contrasting change in her behavior, like she had become stubborn, confident, outgoing and demanding during this period in contrast to her normal behavior. She developed interest in drawing and painting, would demand different types of fast food items, dresses, and certain objects in the altered state. Her mother fearing worsening of her illness readily fulfilled these demands. Rebecca stopped going to school and would stay at home all day long. Upon exploration, it was found that about 2 years back, her father and older sister had left the house to live separately from Rebecca and her mother. There was a strained relationship among the parents on the issue of not having a son. Since separation, there was no communication with them. Rebecca was...

...Psychological Disorders Writing Assignment The purpose of this project is to give you experience in making clinical diagnoses and to attempt to make sense of the many psychological disorders that are out there. You have been assigned to watch a popular movie. I decided to give this to you before Christmas Break because you will have at least 2 weeks to think of the movies form the list and watch one or two or whatever number you want. Pretend that you are a clinical psychologist, and the character in the movie has come in to your office. There is one central character in the movie that has symptoms of a psychological disorder (sometimes there may be more than one character; I have given you the character with the most obvious symptoms). In your paper, you should give a brief description of the character. Then, you should answer the following: o Identify the diagnosis that you would make of the character. • You should back up your diagnosis with the relevant symptoms displayed by the character (in other words, explain why did you make the diagnosis that you did). Refer to the movie to illustrate the symptoms that the character demonstrates. • Discuss all the possible symptoms of the disorder; does the client show all the possible symptoms, or only some of the possible symptoms of the disorder? • In some cases, the character may be lying, and does not really have a disorder. For example, the person may be faking the disorder to avoid prosecution...

Mental Illness: Misrepresented In The Media

...It also states how it’s the people who are prejudice are the ones who endorse the stereotypes and generate negative emotional reactions. Another great point that was listed is “Stigmas about mental illness seem to be widely endorsed by the general public in the Western world. Studies suggest that the majority of citizens in the united states and many western Europeans nations have stigmatizing views about mental illness are not limited to uninformed members of the general public; even well-trained professionals from most mental health disciplines subscribe to stereotypes about mental illness”(Corrigan, P. W., & Watson, A. C.,2002) This fact actually surprised me because from what I also was under the misconception that only the general public was under the impression it’s quite shocking to find out that even well-trained professionals are susceptible to this as well. Much like the articles before, the authors believe that the media should stop reporting inaccurate representations of mental illness and that the public should stop believing in negative views about mental illness. Not only that, but they believe that by forcing the general public to meet people with mental illness who live regular lives they may diminish the...

...WORKING WITH ABUSED CHILDREN 1 / CHAPTER ONE The Abuse of Filipino Childr en Filipino families consider children as gifts from God (Bulatao 1975). They are persons who inspire love and affection and bring happiness and security in the twilight years of parents. Interestingly, children are seen as links to immortality because children pass on from one generation to another the family’s name, history, and heritage. Often, children are portrayed as being nurtured and properly attended to in their homes; however, Filipino children are not as secure and protected as they are ideally portrayed. The increasing number of street children who work on the streets or beg for alms from pedestrians and motorists belie such an idealized portrayal. Street children, among other things, are the most palpable reminder that all is not well with Filipino children. Reality reveals the many children who are denied even the most minimum of needs like food, love, nurturance, stability, security, and stimulating learning environment that will allow for their healthy development. Many Filipino children are rushed into maturity because early on in their lives, they are forced to contend with difficult problems and to take on adult roles and responsibilities. Media and popular and academic literature, more than any other time, has brought to our attention the plight of children, be they street children or not, who perform adult roles and who are in need of the basic components ...
