...MARTHY MCCASKEY* Martha McCaskey1 felt both elated and uneasy after her late Friday meeting with Tom Malone and Bud Hackert, two of the top managers in Praxis Associates’ Industry Analysis division. Malone, the division’s de facto COO, had said that upon successful completion of the Silicon 6 study, for which McCaskey was project leader, she would be promoted to group manager. The promotion would mean both a substantial increase in pay and a reprieve from the tedious field work typical of Praxis’ consulting projects. Completing the Silicon 6 project, however, meant a second session with Phil Devon, the one person who could provide her with the information required by Praxis’ client. Now, McCaskey reflected, finishing the project would likely mean following the course of action proposed by Hackert and seconded by Malone to pay Devon off. Praxis’ client, a semiconductor manufacturer based in California, was trying to identify the cost structure and manufacturing technologies of a new chip produced by one of its competitors. McCaskey and the others felt certain that Phil Devon, a semiconductor industry consultant who had worked in the competitor’s West Coast operation some 12 years earlier, could provide the detailed information on manufacturing costs and processes required by their client (see Exhibit I for a summary of the required information). Her first interview with Devon had caused McCaskey to have serious doubts both about the propriety of asking for such...

...BECOMING A WRITER January of 2011 was the beginning of a special adventure in my life as a student. I took an English class 0890, at Utah Valley University. Now, in the last days of this class, almost four months later, I can look back and see myself with a lot of problems in my writing that needed to be fixed. These four months in this class have helped me solve many writing challenges. I am far from perfect in becoming a good writer but I have learned that hard work and perseverance can produce wonderful results. Even though I learned many things, the three man points that I want to talk about are the following: quote analysis scaffold, grammar, and research online. The first month of the English 0890 class was intense, the students had to do a special analysis writing exercise called “Quote analysis scaffold”. It is the developing of many skills in one exercise. It helps develop reading and vocabulary comprehension. After the quote analysis scaffold is made, it can be used in the essay as a hook or concluding thought. We ended up doing around ten of these exercises. After writing the quote, provided from the teacher, this analysis was made from the following steps: The first thing was to do a research online about the author and make two to three sentences, on average, about who he was and what were his major contributions to society. Second, the students had to look for unknown words and their definition in the dictionary. After this, the third part was for the students...

...Dani Szafran WR121 Process Analysis Essay How to Pick the Wrong Significant Other There are very few things I am good at that I can eloquently put into words and give instructions for them. One thing I do really well; constantly dating the wrong person. Friends might think that after making the same mistakes over and over again, that I would have learned by now. Those friends are wrong. At least, they were. Finally admitting to myself what mistakes I’ve been making, and talking to my friends about it, I have learned to take more time in getting to know someone. It always starts the same way: a cute face. A physical attraction. Just go with it. I wait until the guy talks to me because I’m just a little too shy and awkward. When they do, I need to get a drink because it loosens me up and makes me less nervous. Maybe my friends are there, that always helps. So, we’re talking and the hormones are flying. Then there’s a light brushing of hands. Electric. Sparks are flying. Also, at this point, the drinks are flowing. Nothing really deep or important usually comes from these conversations. It’s basically just like two teenagers trying not to paw at each other in public. We arrange to hang out again. Great! First dates are awkward but I get that excited feeling in my stomach when I’m pulling up to meet them. Once, I was extra nervous as I wasn’t quite sure I’d recognize the person that I’d met at a bar and talked to for about five minutes before setting up a date. Fortunately...

It is described as the most natural, emotional feeling because it is outcome of love due to family ties. Fatefully, it is the strong point what makes it the most defenseless. The affection is “built-in” and as a consequence people expect it. Prologue This poetry anthology is a collection of poems, which shows the people's view of love. As I am a hopeless romantic, I chose this topic. I think the journey that life takes us all on is one filled with many adventures. I believe to truly live life to the fullest would be to love. If a person can say that he or she has never truly been loved or loved someone then he or she has never really lived. The feeling of love is so euphoric. The closeness and love that a truly spiritual person has for God or any other religion is a “gift-love”. The love a...

...may need training to gain further skills or knowledge. They may be over-stretched and suffering from stress. Perception can also affect our judgement of another person’s level of motivation. The individual may be competent, but acting in ways that appear incongruent with the culture of the organisation and therefore the individual seems to lack competence or motivation. On a more personal level, the individual may not appear motivated to us, because they may lack the ability to perform at our level, or their style, or manner, may be quite different from ours. Putting broader environmental issues to one side, there are two major theories about motivation. The first is process analysis. This contends that energy will be expended if people expect to be rewarded and if they value the reward they are to receive. Hence, telling me that I will receive performance related pay may motivate me if (a) I value money as a reward and (b) I believe that there is a direct link between my performance and the money I might receive. There are at least three potential breakdowns in this process. I see that my efforts do not result in good performance (eg because I lack the skills, ability, back-up to do the job); My good...

...Individual Conflict Analysis Jemain McCreary MGT 210 Individual Conflict Analysis Analyzing conflict is not as easy as it may seem. The reason that it is not easy is because it does not involve just one person. However; analyzing conflict is very important to solving the issue that the parties are involved in. Analyzing conflicts involve defining the conflict, actions taken during conflict, interpreting the conflict, and a hand full of ways to try to resolve the issues. Any, or most of the conflicts that I have been involved in could have been handled a lot better than they have been if I or we would have addressed the conflict sooner than later. I have learned techniques that have been quite helpful lately. Recently, I have been in a conflict with my girlfriend, and it has since calmed down because of the positive things that we have done to correct our problems. There has been compromising, increased communication, negotiation, and a lot of time spent with each other. The benefits of analyzing my conflict with my girlfriend really helped us reach a common ground. I think that the root of the conflict is the start to analyzing the problem. The root would be the main cause of the conflict. If the main issue is identified, then that is a great start to reaching an end to the conflict. I believe the root of my conflict with my girlfriend is more of a certain feeling that both of us was experiencing. I also believe that stress allowed us to not think clearly...

...World by Gary Jules is about existence. He realizes that there is no point in existence and that life is just very trivial. Gary Jules sees the world as worn out, dry, and wonders if its really worth it. Children are completely oblivious to the outside world. During the time when a child feels so excited about an event that an adult finds almost insignificant, they display true ignorance and obliviousness. The singer yearns to be a child and have such mentalities, but as he cannot, he sees no reason to exist. Lyrically the song is pretty loose. It throws together a lot of different images to paint a picture without saying anything specific about the world. He starts the song off with “All around me are familiar faces, Worn out places, worn out faces. Bright and early for their daily races, going nowhere, going nowhere. Their tears are filling up their glasses. No expression, no expression. Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow, no tomorrow, no tomorrow” (line 1-8). The familiar faces, worn out places, and worn out faces indicate that he has seen all their is to see, and that to him, all faces look the same, worn out and tired of life. If one considers the commute from home to work, at the end of the day its just the same cycle over again the next day. He continues to wonder where life is really going. When he sings bright and early for their daily races, going nowhere, he means the daily races of our lives. How busy and how hectic they can be. We all wake up bright and early as...

...swain March 3, 2014 patti swain Today I would like to talk to you about homelessness. Every day the numbers grow. There are many reasons for people becoming homeless. Alcohol and drug addiction is one of the main reasons of homelessness. Phychosis and depression are the second highest reason, and serious mental disorders are the third highest reason. Researchers have over 29 studies that have included over 5684 homeless individuals. Every day we are coming up with new answers to why people are becoming homeless and we are constantly working on ways to keep everyone off of the streets. The homeless are a group of people that have poorer physical and mental health than the general population. There are over 1 million homeless worldwide. According to the Prevalence of Mental Health Disorders among the homeless: Systematic Review and Meta-Regression Analysis published December 02, 2008 DOI 10.1371/Journal.pmed.005225 the main causes of homelessness are the following: * Drug and alcohol misuse * Lack of social support * Family support * Family breakdown and disputes * Institutional backgrounds (prison) * Armed services * Mental disorders In today’s society the homeless are looked down upon. No One wants to ask questions but just assume. I think that everyone should be treated the same and not judged by how they look or the clothes that they wear...

...The Case Study Handbook by William Ellet) A case, at its simplest level, is a real-world situation in which you, the marketing professional, are expected to use your critical thinking skills to figure out what to do. As in most real-world situations, you have neither enough information or time to really address the problem, and you also have a million other things going on at the same time. So rather than thrashing about aimlessly, this mini-guide is intended to give you a skeleton of an approach that may be useful in analyzing these cases. The first step in any case analysis is to actively read the case. That means going through it carefully and making notes in the margins, highlighting, or whatever other methods you typically use to understand what is really going on in the case. Treat the case like a mystery novel – try to unravel the complex web of information (and sometimes disinformation) that is presented. Typically the cases will be tied to the chapter of the text we are currently reading, but that is not always the case. If appropriate, think about the principles we are discussing for that chapter and see if they apply to that particular case or not. The instructor (me) is not always good about fitting the cases and the chapters together, and these are general purpose cases not necessarily oriented to a Product Management course, so there may not be the perfect overlap that would happen in a perfect world, or somewhere like Harvard. All cases are self-contained...
