Social media is harmful to youth and social media has the ability to affect one’s future. Social media seems to have a huge affect on teens/students in many different cases such as stress, cyberbullying, enticement to waste time, and overall one’s future. Responsibility plays a major role in social networking; one must be very responsible because it can affect them, which can could have long term affect on their future. Social media is known for bullying, false rumors, and a bunch of negative; however, some may say that social media is a great aspect of one’s future and present and is beyond useful. Others may say social media is created to ruin lives. There’s only one question to the people of society; Is social media apart of our world, or is social media literally our world? Social media allows false information to spread to million of online users rapidly. It essentially causes problems that may not be fixed as fast as they were spread. “Missteps and misinformation get issued and repeated more quickly than ever.” (Todd leopold C1) It is known that whatever happens on the internet stays on the internet. Because social media spreads rapidly, and anything you do or say could be seen by millions of people that you don’t even know exist whether it’s true or false. For instance if you’re planning on getting a job in the near future, future employers could have access to your personal life; also if you’re planning to attend college,

Nelson 2 colleges have access to your personal life as well. Social media lacks privacy, even if you make your facebook, twitter, and/or instagram private there are still people who are looking who could tell a friend that doesn’t have access to your private accounts. It’s who takes in your information and how they use it. “ But in an increasingly connected world social networking has made us all news sources” ( Todd Leopold C1).

Effects of Social Networking Sites

...of Web 2.0 applications. Sites such as Facebook have exploded in membership. In a short period of 2007 – 2010, Facebook estimates that its membership has grown from 50 million to over 400 million users (Facebook, n.d.). Online social networks are now an integrated part of daily life and compel questions of how these media platforms affect human development, relationships, and interaction. Teenagers are among the most avid users of technology in general and social network sites in particular (Lenhart, Madden, Macgill, & Smith, 2007b). Recent reports find that youth spend nearly 10 hours per day using some form of technology, with socially networked media playing a large role in their daily lives (Rideout, Foehr, & Roberts, 2010). New technologies are deeply intertwined with adult perceptions about teenage life. Mimi Ito and colleagues observe that, “Although today’s questions about ‘kids these days’ have a familiar ring to them, the contemporary version is somewhat unusual in how strongly it equates generational identity with technology identity” The clear finding is that today’s youth are increasingly connected to the world through socially networked media. While teenagers are engaged with technology, they are ever more disengaged from another major component of their lives – school. National analyses find that nearly 30% of high school students do not obtain their diploma on time (Cataldi,...

Effects of Social Networking Sites

...The influence of social networking sites on high school students' social and academic development Dissertation Author: June Ahn Abstract: This dissertation examines the effects of social network sites on youth social and academic development. First, I provide a critical analysis of the extant research literature surrounding social network sites and youth. I merge scholarly thought in the areas of Internet studies, digital divides, social capital theory, psychological well-being, identity development, academic engagement, and educational technology to understand how researchers might examine new social technologies and youth. Second, I examine the question of digital divide, or whether particular teenage populations do not have access to online social networks. Using a nationally representative dataset from the Pew Internet & American Life study, I explore whether there are disparities in teenage access to social network sites. Third, I report a cluster-randomized trial that was designed to explore whether social network sites have a beneficial impact when used in high school classrooms. A total of 50 classrooms, and nearly 1,400 students were randomly assigned to use an experimental social network site. The results highlight the challenges and potential of this technology when applied to school contexts.

Social Media's Impact on Politics

...Media’s Impact on the Government Subtopic: Social Media’s impact on Politics Social Media has had a lot of impacts in the government. It affects the governments in different ways such as:Globally, Politically, economically, and Involvement. As we know now a days the government likes to use social media to keep us informed or as youths like to say it to keep us Hip. The Government doesn’t just use social media to keep us Hip, but they also use it for campaigning. As said here “It has become fairly common for political campaigns to produce commercials and publish them for free on YouTube instead of, or in addition to, paying for time on television or the radio.”(Tom, Different ways of doing it). Politicians use social Media to do things like this in order to save money. Meaning when they are campaigning they also try to save money. “Personal communication via social media brings politicians and parties closer to their potential voters.”(European Parliamentary, Politicians). This shows how politicians are brought together with the people that could potentially vote for them. “Reactions, feedback, conversations and debates are generated online as well as support and participation for offline events.”(European Parliamentary, People). Due to social Media more and more youths are involved in politics, this means youths are no longer left in the dark they are knowledged. “41% of young people engaged in at least one act of...

Reality Television Affecting Body Image

...Reality Television Affecting Body Image Media of today has swallowed lives of the youth as it constantly portrays an image of perfection in which they must live up to. Individuals have seen through reality television and other sources what is categorized as this image. This is shown psychologically as it is not directly stated but represented. The Hills and The Real World, two MTV reality television shows, are provoking public interest showing these wrong images influencing the youth. This is changing the youth, as they are slowly becoming more and more degraded as the generations’ progress. Our next generation is constantly fighting a battle against reality television shows and their overall visual portraying what teens of today must live up to. Due to these programs today, the youth of today are constantly competing with “unrealistic self-expectations to be perfect; not just physical appearance, but more importantly, overall peer ranking” (dailytitan). Shows like The Real World and The Hills, both MTV programs, “sensationalize the physical attractiveness, sexual promiscuity, drug and alcohol abuse, co-dependent relationships and other negative connotations as to what is the norm” (dailytitan). For example, a young teen of today, could watch Real World or The Hills and see perfect body images, generating insecurity within them, leading to vulnerability around “popular kids” who induce self-doubting. This changes the teens overall impression of perfection. Magazines of...

Scarface Stereotypes

...history. For decades society has known about psychoactive substances and many are presented through media as a norm. Throughout, the American popular culture, the media frequently documented these substances through movies, songs, TV shows, TV commercials, etc. Both society and the media have implemented good and bad stereotypes of drug use. On one side, they indicate that media cannot portray more than it is actually shown in the media. On the other hand, longitudinal studies support a connection between media portrayals of drug use and other drugs among children, adolescents and young adults. For this said, I decided to choose one of America’s popular movies, Scarface,...

Media Impact on Youth Violence

...Media Impact On Youth Violence Today’s media has influenced the youth to become more violent in the sense that what children see in the media is what they will most likely try to imamate. The impact the media has on today’s youth has brainwashed them into doing acts of violence along with making bad decisions to fit in. I remember when I was a kid growing up I watched the news from time to time and one day while watching the news randomly like I would sometimes I seen that the government was attempting to outlaw the production of urban music because in their belief it was supposedly violent and not to be heard by the youth. I followed this story on the news for a while and after a couple of weeks I found out that some of the youth was doing violent actions after listening to urban music. I wanted full proof so I watched some of my friends and how they acted after listening to urban music and as bad as it seemed the government had a point that couldn’t be augured against. Urban music had influenced drugs, sex, money, crime, and gangs the music that I listened to and liked had become the music that birthed many of today’s criminals. The first point I would like to make would be the fact that music has had a major influence in the way the youth acts and how violent they become when hearing certain kind of music. I have seen kids at my school acting wild and violent when listening to artist like Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flames, and Lil Wayne. I have seen artist like Machine...

The Mass Media

...The Mass Media The mass media, including Television, Video Games, Radio, Newspapers, Magazines, the Internet and Advertisements, have a great influence in shaping peoples thoughts and ideas, sometimes in a better way, but most of the time in a unconstructive way. The purpose of mass media is to entertain, inform and persuade information to a large group of people, and it can affect how we dress, what we buy and how our society functions. Even though there are a lot of positive influences in the media, in my eyes there is still way more negative influence. The media is affecting children, the youth and society in general. According to the studies by the Kaiser Family Foundation there was a 400% increase from 1976 to 1996 in sexual references. Not to mention all of the television shows that influence crime, drugs and drinking alcohol. If children learn by observing, imitating and making behaviors their own, then why are all of these negative influences on the mass media? People are trying to understand why the crime rate is so high in the youth population, maybe they should take a look at what they are watching on a day to day basis. Now day’s children have an extremely easy access to the media. Sometimes parents will even hand their children the remote, or buy them a new video game to act is if it were a babysitter. What people need to know is; children learn by observing, imitating and making behaviors their own, so all of the things they are watching...

Influence of Media on America’s Youth

...Influence of Media on America’s Youth What teen has not been exposed to the internet, cell phones, television, video games, or social networking? They control the lives of our youth. American teenagers have become obsessed with new hobbies, and no, they are not knitting, fishing, or gardening. Our nation’s adolescent lives revolve around handheld electronic devices, gaming consoles, and anything and everything that has a screen. Obviously the present growth of technology is remarkable, but do we truly know how it is directly impacting America’s youth? The lives of today's teens revolve around technology and various social media, all of which severely affect adolescent health, relationships, and education, exposing young adults to the bittersweet reality of modern life. In more ways than one would initially believe, the media affects the well being of adolescents. California Adolescent Health Collaborative provided survey results showing that 21 percent of teens who regularly use the media in California are at risk for depression. The collaborative also supplies the fact that teens who are habitual users of technology and social networks report not being satisfied with their lives due to often feeling glum and having a lack of excitement or even frequently being in trouble (Carroll et al). Teens who often try to stay under the radar, but are glued to their cell phones, are inclined to have damage to their mental wellness which may impair how they function on a daily basis....
