The movie which I chose was Lean On Me. From this movie, a conceited and unconventional educator comes back as principal to the idyllic high school from which he had previously been sacked to discover that it has become a burrow of drug abuse, mob violence, in addition to urban misery. Ultimately his efficacious but unorthodox approaches lead to a conflict with city executives that threaten to undo all his exertions. The school located in Paterson, New Jersey, has below average basic skills test scores. Consequently, it is faced with the likelihood of being taken over by the municipal. Therefore, the mayor asks the institute administrator for help, and he proposes that they employ the scandalous Joe Clark as the school head. Clark reluctantly agrees to become its next head. And when Clark arrives, he shakes things up by recasting instructors as well as calling all of them ineffectual. And it is not long before a lot of individuals demand for his removal. However, but at the same time, Clark gains the admiration of some of the instructors and the learners when he gradually turns round the fortunes of the school. Information is exchanged for a variety of reasons and it flows both ways. Communication plays a crucial role in modeling and upholding acceptable superior-subordinate relations. There are numerous concepts at play in superior-subordinate communication. Key among them include feedback, upward influence, and trust. First, upward communication or influence refers to the process where information is transmitted from the lower (subordinates) levels of an organization to the upper (superiors) levels of an organization. Such kinds of communication include estimations, proposals, complaints, grievances, petitions, reports among others. This is very important because it plays the role of the feedback to a successful downward communication that may have been made earlier. Through such communication, the superiors can be able to assess the position of the organization, as well as subordinates vis a vis daily running of the organization. From the film Lean On Me, there are numerous instances where there is an upward influence is the scene where the choir teacher Mrs. Elliot responds angrily to Mr. Clark’s promptness to stop practicing. Mrs. Elliot was preparing students for an upcoming conference when she was ordered to stop apparently for not informing Clark. After an exchange, it is apparent that there was an upward influence and it revealed a lot about Clark’s no nonsense character (Schiffer, 257). Second, the concept of trust is very important superior-subordinate communication. It refers to honesty and righteousness at all times between the superiors and subordinates. Trust is very critical in an organization because it serves the function of ensuring that everything is done in an open and candid way. Through trust, the organization is bound to achieve its objectives and goals quite smoothly. There is also an air of transparency and hence easy to analyze things with predictable results. In the movie Lean On Me, there are instances where trust comes into play. The school superintendent Dr. Frank Napier has immense trust in Clark. In this case, Dr. Frank Napier is the superior while Clark is the superior. The mere respect accorded to Clark by Dr. Frank Napier shows that he immensely trusts him to turn the fortunes if the school round (Schiffer, 257). In another scene, the staffs of the school gradually start trusting Clark and his methods to turn the fortunes of the school round. Trust is, therefore, a vital leadership element that binds the human relations into an operative and working partnership. Third, compliance gaining is the attempt of deliberately trying to change one’s behavior. This concept refers to how individuals endeavor to get other persons to do things, or conform. There are various compliance gaining tactics that individuals can use. These include promising, threatening, use of expertise, aversive stimulation, moral appeal, coercive power among others. In superior-subordinate communication, superiors are the most common people who tend to use various compliance gaining tactics so as to get things done. In the movie Lean On Me, there are numerous instances where Clark uses compliance gaining techniques so as to achieve his objectives of restoring the glory of the school. For instance, he threatens to fire the teacher of English for complaining about his treatment. In this scene, Clark uses coercive power. Clark also promises one of his students not to punish him if he tells him those who are doing the wrong things within the school (Schiffer, 257). A major goal of compliance gaining is behavioral conformism, not essentially credence or attitude modification.
In a word, media analysis has helped me gain insight into some of the most intricate matters of superior-subordinate communication. For instance, for effective communication to take place between the two parties, then there must be certain communication elements. Concepts such as feedback are very important in ensuring that the organization is in the right course of action. Upward influence is also very important in communication. A subordinate who is gratified with his or her upward communication will be less anxious about communicating upward than a subordinate who is displeased with his or her upward communication.
