Media Influence
We’ve likely to grown up thinking that the main stream media was our friend, the middle man that is always there when we need it. Faithfully provides us with information that is of common sense and natural judge for everything that matters. They’ve told what to eat, what to drink, how to eat, how to drink, what wear to, and what the standards of beauty should be and look like. The content that’s important, and a reliable guide to existence. As we’ve gotten older we have come to realize that this isn’t quite true as we would want it to be. For that we have to go in depth with what is wrong with the main stream media. From time to time, the greatest messages have been propagandized through the usage of movies and drama over the asphyxiation of motive and emotional sequences, disregarding any logical or factual sequences, thus having media outlets pushing emotional content to its viewers, distorting fantasy from reality. This content is necessary in the eyes of the distributor that is trying to get its consumers to do something or believe in the same ideology as the distributor would want them to believe in. Rather than go through a discussion or debate using logic and facts. Let’s take Fox News for example, a right wing news outlet that specializes in taking tender topics to the extremes to get its viewers hooked on its coverage for consumption, allowing one side of an argument to be seen but not the other, thus having its observers believe or follow their sayings. A prime example of that would be the Trayvon Martin story. Hour after hour coverage on the case would go through the roof with new information coming from its host and guest to pick, analyze and leave out information that they see fit. Headlines such as “Trayvon Martin Could Have Killed Someone with Skittles and Iced Tea”

...Gwendolyn Davis Influence of Visual Media Hum/ 176 Instructor Prichard University of Phoenix August 12, 2012 Interrelationships are defined as being placed in or coming into mutual relationship with someone and or something. Forms of visual entertainment media are; radio, television, CD’s and DVD’s to name a few. When one speak of Media and the influence it has made on American society as far as culture and values, I can honestly see the reflection from what is viewed and or listened to in our day to day lives. In the times of old there were some shows that allowed a glimpse as to what we are living in now as far as the change of times. Shows like the Jeffersons and Different Strokes allowed Americans to see the change that was coming within our families, communities and the world as a whole. The Shape of Americans Culture and Values. As times have changed so has our ability to gain instant access whether it is the local news, a nationally syndicated radio talk show or the ability to attend online university and gain a degree as a working adult. America has changed based on the media; however it is up to each individual to determine the shape that is being made. We have come along way from VCR’S and huge televisions that weigh a few hundred pounds. Being that the majority of the world is always on the go, these are some awesome attributes of American culture and the shape it is taking; however the negative aspect for me is the fact that...

Influence of Visual Media

...Influence of Visual Media Kimberly Malave Hum/176 Melissa Caldwell 11/8/14 • In what ways have various forms of visual entertainment media shaped American Culture and its values? Media has changed dramatically over the last century. And visual entertainment media has shaped American culture and values in many ways as well. In today’s society there are so many different kinds of entertainment media that it has caused us to forget about the more important values in life. For example, today we all rely on the internet for so many things from shopping, to paying bills, to social media and news updates. We no longer have to wait for our information to be released through the newspaper, or books. Game systems, internet, films, cell phones and more have taken away from our values of taking the time to actually enjoy a drama or comedy through reading, even looking for information. Back in the day children didn’t have TV’s, so they would spend a lot of their time outside playing and being active. In today’s younger generation, the children rather be in the house and play video games or watch shows on TV than go outside and play with friends. The social influences of visual entertainment media have been more negative than positive. For example, YouTube has millions of videos up but most of them are either something negative or something of no benefit. Most of those videos are either about...

Media Influence in Society

...Grand Canyon University February 12, 2012 Professor Lisa Denny Media Influence in Society Media plays an important role in our every day lives. It is always there to confuse, manipulate, and to cloud our judgement. Nine out of ten of the population have checked weather, traffic, social sites and the news as their first act of the day. It is a powerful instrument that we have all become so dependent upon. To us it is as normal as breathing. It can be used for positive as well as negative. I feel the negative effects are stronger because of the "consistency" used to pound this negativity into society's mind. It isn't necessary to use a hot babe in skimpy attire to sell a hamburger, but I've seen it done and in commercials for "family" restaurants. Sex is used to sell anything and everything and in that respect, it sends a negative message all around. Gone are the days when it was a shock to see an undergarment in a commercial. Now it's nothing to see the undergarments attached to live models. How many people do you think are actually looking at the undergarments instead of the body parts ( Kathy D 2007)? . On the flip side...there are good influences via the media. When a catastrophe strikes such as hurricane Katrina, people are seen reaching out to help others. The tv show "Extreme Home Makeover" is a great example of how strangers pull to together to help those less fortunate. Influences such as these can provoke the thought for people to help more in their...

Influence of Visual Media

...Influence of Visual Media Radio was the popular media until television became the leader in mass media. Television reached out to people in a visual and auditory sense. The influence of this visual entertainment coupled with major motion pictures shaped and influenced American culture in ways that are negative as well as positive. The positive aspects range from instantaneous world news coverage such as weather events to political wars. Sporting events or learning how to prepare a favorite meal is available through a television in a person’s home. Major motion pictures “the movies” brought big screen entertainment to people where they were able to escape reality of their own lives and get lost in the plot of a story shown on the big screen. Some of the television shows and the motion pictures have mirrored real life activities and at other times are fictitious or a combination of both. There is ample proof in society that media is responsible for generating negative feelings among its viewers. Children are especially vulnerable to the negative influence of violence or viewing alcohol use, and abuse in films. When people frequently view death, sex, rape, suicide, and murder, it is a negative influence, because there are images etched in their subconscious that can never be unviewed. The television shows cost money to produce and air time has to be bought to show the program on television. Commercials are sold in order to pay for the cost of the shows. The companies...

Media Influences on Sport

...Media Influence On Sport When communication is spread not just between two individuals but rather between tens of millions of people it is known as mass media. Mass media is known as the central nervous system of society. "Mass media has many different purposes, such as providing information, entertaining, persuading and also by carrying a vague general function of culture to millions of people."(Frederick 18). In order for mass media to exist, there must be an audience. Today's society is very selective; each receiver reacts differently through his or her own experience and orientation according to mass media. Therefore, mass media exists in many different forms such as magazines, television, newspapers, internet, motion pictures, and even plays. Some examples of these forms of mass media are cosmopolitan magazine for young modern women and TSN television network for sports fans. With such extreme varieties of mass media existing in today's societies there are three major constraints that seem to have an impressionable impact. These constraints can keep mass media very restricted. The major constraint of mass media is competition. Each form of mass media wants to be the one to target the audience, so therefore competition between mass media is very strong, because capturing the inside of the sports world is critical. Apart from the competition among the various forms of media there is also competition among each form of the media example Fox network competes...

Televisions, computers, and smartphones with access to different forms of visual media are used on a regular basis. These forms of visual media entertainment media has helped to shape American culture and its values. One form of visual entertainment media that shaped American culture and its values is cable television. In the beginning the three main broadcast networks, CBS, NBC, and ABC accounted for nearly all prime-time television viewing but with the introduction of cable television, a wide variety of channels became available to consumers. Now there are several different cable companies from which customer are able to choose from. Sitting around and watching television has become the main form or entertainment for most families. Families use to get together to play board games or listen to the radio and new they use getting together to watch their favorite show every week as a way to bond. Another form of visual entertainment media that has shaped American culture is the internet. I think this form has had the biggest impact. Just about everyone has used the internet at some point in time. Most people use it on a regular basis. There are video web sites such as, Hulu and Netflix, on which customers are able to view movies or their favorite television show whenever they want. These sites are accessible...

Influences of Visual Media

...Visual media has changed American culture tremendously over time. I think that television has the most to do with this change. What the normal family unit looked like in the 1960’s was the Cleaver family. If you think about it over time the family look changed. Andy Griffith was a single Dad that had his Aunt there to help with his child. The Brady’s were two divorced parents bringing all the children together trying to create harmony. Then we had the Huxtables that were an upper class black family and the Evans family from Good Times to show how the lower class lived. Now the family that so many Americans compare themselves to is the Kardashians. Quite a difference from the Cleavers. Advertisements on television also play a huge part in shaping societies view of what we should do or have to “fit in.” As with anything there is always positive and negative. I think the social influence of visual media is mostly positive. As far as the news goes distance is no longer a barrier. We also have up to date news and weather reports. This is extremely positive and helps warn the public when severe weather is about to come. Shows such as The Voice or America’s Got Talent helps discover people with talent that before would only be locally recognized. Games help people connect with one another and form a team. I think this helps so many adolescence discover team work. Some of the more negative sides to the social influence of visual media. Some of the negative influences are the...

Influence of Entertainment Media

...Influence of Entertainment Media Over the years, there have been many ways that various forms of entertainment media, like movies, and television has influenced American culture. All you have to do is to look at how our fashion, hairstyles, even the way we speak is influenced by entertainment media. Influences for entertainment media are all around us, and whether we want to or not we are influenced by them every day. Some major American values are individuality, privacy, time, and informality. All types of media have helped people develop their individuality by letting them chose what television show or station to watch, the different and wide selection of radio stations, and the massive unlimited sites on the internet. You have the privacy to use all types of media in your home, car, or whatever place you choose to. People would have some kind of time to watch television, listen to the radio, or be on the computer because they are all offered twenty-four hours a day. All media in a way are informative, the radio, television, the internet, all have either a station or site solely for news. So, you are always being informed about something. The social influences of the entertainment media have been both positive and negative. On the positive side, I think that visual media, like television and movies, has helped to thwart racism and bring equality to both, people of color, and women. For example, women now are no longer just seen as housewives or...

The Influence of Violent Media on Teen Violence

...The Influence of Violent Media on Teen Violence Back to over two thousand years ago, Socrates once wrote: “Our youth now love luxury, they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders, and love to chatter in place of exercise.” Truly teenage rebellion has been around for a long time. Teenage is one of the most dynamic period in our life. People change the most while they are teens, both physically and emotionally. Unlike adults, teenagers may not be aware the consequence of their rebellious acts. When it comes to extreme act of rebellion it becomes violence. Teen violence comes in many forms and vary degrees. For example, verbal abuse, bully, physical fight, gang violence, and assault with or without weapons are the most common violent behavior among teenagers. Teen violence is a growing concern in our society. People often hear teenagers bullying, teenagers involved in violent crimes on the news. According to Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance, about 20% of high school students report being bullied on school property in the U.S. in 2009 (8). One third of students had been in a physical fight in the last twelve months (6). For many teenagers, violence is a way to release anger and express freedom. All parents want their teens away from violent behavior. Before we can find solutions for the youths, we need to figure out why is teen violence happening? What makes teenagers turn to violence? There’re always have different and more than one reason that...
