Almost every day of our lives we are exposed to the media in at least one form or another. Television shows, magazines, newspapers, radiobroadcasts, videogames, books, and the internet are all different outlets of media— produced and published images and ideas that are circulated and communicated around communities, nations, and the world. How often do we stop and reflect on how these images and ideas shape us or if they even affect us at all? An article by an aliased blogger, “Media and How It Affects Culture”, claims that we as a “mature and healthy culture” will not be affected by different notions displayed in the media—that the media is a reflection of society already (MJFANDE). In response to this claim, what the author fails to acknowledge is that the illustrations seen on television, in video games, and other media outlets are not reflections of society in the real world, but reflections of the human imagination designed to entertain, inform, and in some cases influence. The outrageous amounts of violence and vulgarity I have seen on television have not ever been condoned in a real world arena, yet these negative actions occur at an increased rate, proportionate to the availability of access to media. Is it completely fair to say that the increased amounts of violence in schools have no relation to the increased amounts of violence depicted in videogames and television? Also, is it rational to suggest that the thousands of anorexic women and even more women who deal with body image based depression have no connection to the fact that almost every successful female figure depicted on magazine covers and in movies are in pristine physical shape and often depicted in a sexualized context. It is clear that mass media has a hand in creating and popularizing toxic culture in these aspects and among others. In this piece I will use these examples to demonstrate how

...exist? Communication dominates and is what drives our lives. Culture, by definition, “is a learned behavior by members of a social group” (Baran, 9). These behaviors are taught by parents to their children, teachers to their students, media to their viewers, etc. Culture is all around us at every point in our lives, as stated by one anthropologist, “culture is the medium evolved by humans to survive, and nothing is free from cultural influences” (Baran, 9). For a moment, think about average daily routines and how culture dominates every aspect. From items chosen to be eaten for breakfast to the music one listens to, all is culture. Culture is found in verbal communication, how one addresses their elders, in non-verbal communication, how one makes eye contact, and in mediated communication, advertisements and television shows. Culture is everywhere and is transmitted through every type of communication. “Communication is the transmission of a message from a source to a receiver” (Baran, 4). In order for there to be culture, communication has to exist. Communication has many forms, the impact of which the message is transmitted depends on the culture that the message is being transmitted through. For example as the internet is growing and social media and smart phones are more readily available the medium of print is becoming less effective and thus eventually becoming obsolete. “Eighty-six percent of all American adults own a cell phone, but half of all Americans own a device with...

Affects of Media on Society

...Affects of Media on Society Walden University HMNT-3001 November 23, 2013 Affects of Media on Society As Americans, do we paint the reality of being lackluster human beings? Does the American personality reflect Kalle Lasn’s description that if one does not reach the feeling of satisfaction we “become shallow and meaningless,” (Lasn, 1999, pg.11)? I do not believe this to be a truth one bit. I do not believe that media’s effects on society make us homogenous. I believe we choose to view and take in media in our own ways. That we can pick and choose what we watch and read, and in turn make sound decisions of what we purchase and consume. I disagree with Kalle Lasn’s view on the media megacorporation that they, “…control not only the daily newspapers and TV airwaves but the magazine, book publishing, motion picture, home video and music industries as well, information and cultural diversity both plummet, (Lasn, 1999, p. 25). Lasn makes consumers out to be almost zombie like. The truth is we have choices on what we watch and read. A republican may choose to watch Fox for all of their news information while a democrat may choose to watch CNN. There are biases that surround certain television networks that no one can change, but you can choose to watch something else. Linda Holtzman stated, “Socialization teaches us the culture of norms of our society. It may teach us that honesty and hard work are valued in the U.S. society. But it can also lead to the misinformation...

Media: Mirror of Society

...Media: Mirror of Society Everywhere in the world, society keeps evolving and changing. The thoughts, mindsets, and ideas of cultures all over the world are constantly changing due to the influences of what they see. The media has always had a role in the construction of an individual’s body image and ideal self. In the article “How does the media influence our thoughts on body image?” Kayhan, Baig, Mehmi and Basra argue that during the early 20th century the ideal, beautiful woman was 5’4 tall and about 140 pounds with a small mid-section; yet, for some if not most women, in order to achieve a small waist they would be put into a Victorian hourglass corset, which shrunk the woman’s waist to a much smaller size, we still see these tactics used by today’s women. This issue isn’t only occurring in the United States, it is a worldwide problem that continues to grow. The media uses the social elite, such as athletes and actresses, to advertise products and goods; the use of these models can have significant outcomes, both negative and positive, on individuals in our society. The positive being that viewers of these magazines that advertise skinny models and fit athletes may be influenced to change their lifestyle from unhealthy to healthy. The negative being that viewer’s want to take the quickest and easiest ways in order to achieve results, which can lead to dangerous side effects and habits. So the question is, is it even worth it to try to look perfect if dangerous methods...

Media Influence in Society

...Bryan Frank Oakes Grand Canyon University February 12, 2012 Professor Lisa Denny Media Influence in Society Media plays an important role in our every day lives. It is always there to confuse, manipulate, and to cloud our judgement. Nine out of ten of the population have checked weather, traffic, social sites and the news as their first act of the day. It is a powerful instrument that we have all become so dependent upon. To us it is as normal as breathing. It can be used for positive as well as negative. I feel the negative effects are stronger because of the "consistency" used to pound this negativity into society's mind. It isn't necessary to use a hot babe in skimpy attire to sell a hamburger, but I've seen it done and in commercials for "family" restaurants. Sex is used to sell anything and everything and in that respect, it sends a negative message all around. Gone are the days when it was a shock to see an undergarment in a commercial. Now it's nothing to see the undergarments attached to live models. How many people do you think are actually looking at the undergarments instead of the body parts ( Kathy D 2007)? . On the flip side...there are good influences via the media. When a catastrophe strikes such as hurricane Katrina, people are seen reaching out to help others. The tv show "Extreme Home Makeover" is a great example of how strangers pull to together to help those less fortunate. Influences such as these can provoke the thought for people...

Impact of Media on Society

...Media has continuously pervaded and defined society and has advanced with technology. The traditional forms of media propagation including television, newspapers, posters and mail remain as efficient as before the introduction of newer methods. Email, websites, e-zines and social online media have replaced expensive media production such as magazines and photographic paper. Media imparts and shapes society’s opinion on the subjects of politics, business, culture and sports. It reflects on the freedom of speech and freedom of expression within a country. The positive aspects of free media far outweigh the negative effects that may occur. In the case of internet based media, control is difficult. Control of the Internet has however been imposed in China. Media has the ability to bring relief to disaster prone areas while at the same time it may be responsible for nurturing prejudice against certain regions. For example, the perception that Africa is an extremely underdeveloped region although it is actually bustling with megacities. In the world of social media, gossip columns have the potential to ruin lives of individuals or boost their popularity. Advertising through modern media has led to the rise of fortune 500 companies. It has been argued that media has resulted in a generation of couch potatoes who rarely engage in outdoor activities. It has become rarer to find someone who has good handwriting since typing is now the preferred skill. Conversely, media has brought...

Media in a Pluralistic Society.

...Media in a Pluralistic Society (Communications) It wasn’t until the 1960’s that women started to break into the previously male-dominated world of sports broadcasting. With many setbacks, difficulties and a large male audience and workforce to win over, female sports broadcasters have endured many challenges and earned the positions they have today. Although the ratio is still what some would consider unfair, the examination of some of the pioneers of female sports broadcasting can help us gain a better understanding of both the evolution of female sports-broadcasting and the unique role in which they play today. Considered three of the most influential figures in female sports broadcasting history, Jane Chastain, Gayle Gardner and Jeannie Morris each have a career and story detrimental to the progression and current position of women in sports broadcasting today. Jane Chastain is documented and credited with being the first woman to work for a large network, and is also widely considered the fist woman to do play-by-play. Being the icebreaker, her role is important but however, her struggles and setbacks as a woman were not well documented. Jeannie Morris’s however, were. A talented journalist and writer, Morris didn’t have a difficult time breaking into the field. Morris was also thought to of gotten the job through her husband’s assistance, Johnny Morris, who is the all-time leader in receiving yards for the Chicago Bears. Morris may have gotten her foot in the door...

Essay On Media Mirror Society

...Although many argue that there are two ways to approach the study of the relationship between media and society - media shape society and media mirror society -, others believe that media actually do both, shape and mirror society. Scholars, anyways, agree on one point: media present a selected view of the world, with a particular perspective. In this class we have been talking about how media are able to distort news more than once, and we got interested in how it happens. We found out that the process is actually quite easy and fast; therefore, we tried to understand if media are able to distort even news that are breaking news. Taking as a case study the Bruxelles attack we analyzed the Fox News coverage and the CNN coverage. The first bomb exploded at 8am (Belgian time) and the second at 9 am, when in America was still night. By looking at the two video, we experienced that both CNN and Fox News chronologically started to contract the news in four steps: first, they tried to identify the enemy, and speculate on who was behind the attack; second, they identified the target and the outcomes of the explosions; third, they started to...

Mass Media Influence on Society

...Media’s Influence on Society Over the last 500 years, the influence of mass media has grown exponentially with the advance of technology. First there were books, then newspapers, magazines, photography, sound recordings, films, radio, television, the so-called New Media of the Internet, and now social media.  Today, just about everyone depends on information and communication to keep their lives moving through daily activities like work, education, health care, leisure activities, entertainment, traveling, personal relationships, and the other stuff with which we are involved.  It's not unusual to wake up, check the cellphone for messages and notifications, look at the TV or newspaper for news, commute to work, read emails, take meetings and makes phone calls, eat meals with friends and family, and make decisions based on the information that we gather from those mass media and interpersonal media sources. We need to be aware that the values we hold, the beliefs we harbor and the decisions we make are based on our assumptions, our experiences, our education and what we know for a fact.  We rely on mass media for the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of. We trust the media as an authority for news, information, education and entertainment. Considering that powerful influence, then, we should know how it really works and how does it really influence us. The degree of influence depends...

The multimedia sources consist of magazines, advertisements, TV shows, and social pages such as Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter, and Facebook, all in which society seems to be addicted to. The real question is, is having all of these sources of media positively or negatively affecting society? Some people blame the media for harming society by causing eating disorders and a low self esteem. On the other hand, many others believe that it helps society in several ways such as keeping people physically fit and boosting self confidence by posting selfies. While...

Media: Not the Precursor for Violence in Society

...Media: Not the Precursor for Violence in Society Although the surge of brutality on television is often blamed as the prominent cause for the increased violence in our society, the true causes are related to the social situations that influence and contributing to violent behavior. Child abuse, domestic violence, poverty, and substance abuse are just some of the issues that have a predominate impact on developing aggressive tendencies; people are created by a combination of these life experiences. It is not a coincidence that many of the children growing up with violence become violent. These same combative adults may gravitate toward television programing that depicts aggressive behaviors. Families and communities are ripped apart by the increasing violence in society. It is argued that exposure to violence from television, movies, and video games do cause the violence in communities. The Aurora Movie Theater shooting and Sandy Hook Elementary massacre are just two examples of horrific violence in schools and communities. Both pointed towards media as the catalyst. Notwithstanding are the many studies showing the effect of aggressive behavior from viewing violence on television. Unfortunately, the results of most of these studies show the relationship of violence just doesn’t go in one direction; according to Leonard Eron (1982, p. 210), “Aggression can be learned in many ways. Recourse to aggressive behavior as a way of solving problems is the...

Social Media and Its Effects on Society

...John Drozd Writing 101 04/07/2016 Social Media and Its Impacts on Society One of the biggest invention in the world is social media. A tool that changed our society and the way we communicate with others. The aspects of social media both have a positive and negative impact on life. Websites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter has made it easier for people to communicate with other people all over the world. However, this type of technology might be doing more harm than good. The downfall of social media is that it prevents people to have a face to face interaction. Without that face to face interaction, false information can be used such as identity. Social media reflex a negative influence in school, relationships, self-influence, and interaction with others. Social media has expanded and became more popular not only to teens but to adults as well. Meeting new people may seem like it has become a good concept because of social networks, but it is the complete opposite. For example, when a guy compliments a girl, the possibility of a girl responding back to a guy in person is way higher than the possibility of a guy leaving a compliment on a girl's picture. People usually tend to respond to people to attractive people and to people that they know personally. The sad truth is that growing up with social media, people feel more comfortable talking behind a computer than in person. This concept...
