1. “How Dell You, Alien?!” ...

...Nine Reasons for Product Development Copyright © 2007 by S. M. Ikhtiar Alam This is a very brief abstract of a training module for Product Development Professional “Product Development” refers to “New Product Development”. What is a new product? We have discussed nine types of products that we develop. All of them are new products in the sense that we change (hub, cross, dilute, adapt to new market needs) and improve existing products, follow the suit (make products similar to others as long as Contestable Market Effect is positive); we also make totally new to the world products (Zero-Based New Products), and/or commercialize something as a product which we already produce and consume only privately and not for sale as a product to other(s) through an exchange process (Non-Zero Based New Product) such as traditional cakes, fast foods, recipes, fruit juices, etc.). All of these are new products. Why does an organization need to develop new products? Organizations manage B-F-T for profits and thus need to change B (Benefit), F (Form), and or T (Technology). There are nine circumstances when such changes are needed. Each of these nine circumstances is called “Reasons for Product Development.” As an Operations Manager, if you do not know why you are producing a product, you are not sure exactly what you have to produce. This will lead to serious demotivation and commitment in managing the operations process effectively and efficiently. In most cases, you are a part...

The plan looks to address and enhance the use of social media marketing. This exhibit is coming to the Flint Institute of Arts starting on October 26, 2014. We will lay out a four step plan using various types of social media that will bring attention and buzz to a great event. Following our blueprint will allow the FIA the opportunity to increase its customer base and marketing methods, not only for this exhibit but for future events it looks to host. A Brief Overview As stated, the Flint Institute of Arts already uses traditional forms of advertising and promotion when it comes to upcoming exhibits and events. ...Strategy is sometimes confused with tactics, plans, vision and others due to the fact those concepts share certain similarities. By including ‘Long-term courses of action’ in our definition we differentiate strategy from tactics. Tactics are very short-term and they are based on existing strategy to address specific situation. ‘Open for adaptation’ specifies that strategy can be modified with time. This is in contrast with plans which are dropped if, for instance, circumstances change and plans cannot be executed. With regard to vision, which is a goal in the ‘far’ future it should be remembered that strategy directly refers to it but it consists of more than a goal. Strategy also provides certain ideas on how to reach the point where vision becomes reality. Our definition also fits well with the importance of flexibility in strategy as mentioned by Kanter (2002). That is, strategy should adapt to changing conditions much like improvisational theater. Defining whether an organisation has a strategy or not might prove difficult as the applicability of perceived strategies is subjective. One way to test the presence of the strategy is to ask a number of questions regarding crucial characteristics of the construct to different executives in the company. For instance, the following questions should be, if possible, answered by at least 3 top executives in the organization: 1. Does your company have a long-term (6 months or longer) general ‘plan’ of action? Yes/No 2. Does your company...

While this is a bid to exploit the entertainment industry, the core service being offered, although not exclusive to, is based on a website that features young artist. Other services ranging from; artist development, campaigning (social media, email-blast & face-face), public relations, will also be a feature of the company to be named “ Xposed”. Considering this is a new business offering a unique service, my research suggests that there is niche for this service based entity. “Xposed” will be a home based company, since operations will be centered on the use of a computer, the internet and cell phone. For managing core business operations the general managing and directing of operations will be done by me. I will employ the services rendered by professionals in various fields, such as: • website creators/graphic designers for the creation of the website and other graphic design needs. •...

...to accomplish its mission, and initiatives. Consequently, executive leadership will support sustainable funding plans and lead the institution through these changes (UNM, 2006). In order to achieve success of this strategy several objectives must be accomplish. First having a more collaborative IT and integrated and governance structure helps the institution make the right decisions in respect to IT. These actions will help the Executive VPs to support the idea of IT funding based on value received (UNM, 2006). Within a strategic level, the only technologies that have changed more rapidly are information technology and communications. These changes are driving most of the changes in a more global business environment. Companies that are capable of getting their “arms around” their information systems and communications have a critical competitive advantage. Companies’ content with older technology will find themselves on the wrong side of an ever expanding technology driven gap in customer service, production flexibility, cost efficiency, customer technical support capability, and product customization and differentiation( UMN, 2006). Consequently, executive leadership will support sustainable funding plans and lead the institution through these changes. Communication plays a large part in this. Commitment on developing comprehensive IT human resource plans to include...

...To what extent are ‘big businesses’ poor at contingency planning? Contingency plans are made to deal with unplanned events such as natural and crises such as floods, fire, system failures or fatalities. For businesses this will be dependent on size or industry area, for example a small shop owner will have a different range of contingency plans to say that of a national bank. A contingency plan is generally made prior to a project taking place and forms part of the formal corporate planning process. Its two main aims being to firstly try and foresee any potential risks that are faced within the course of a projects life, and secondly it sets out guidelines to be followed in the event of any such event actually take place. Large businesses take these precautions generally as standard as in the process of projects, in the short run contingency planning may be costly to the businesses but in the long run it can save the business a lot of money in the event of such crisis. Small businesses often lack the resources and capital to undertake such thorough planning, often this leads to negative consequences for these businesses. When undertaking contingency planning businesses will use ‘SWOT matrix’ analysis, weighing up the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to carrying out a venture. By doing so businesses will firstly decide whether or not the plan is viable enough to carry on, after this it allows them to delve into what potential problems or threats and the likelihood...
