Medical Billing and Coding Medical Billing and Coding is an occupation that is rapidly growing. If you choose to work from home or in an office the salary can fluctuate. If working in an office then there are benefits such as 401K and health insurance. If working from home, these options are not available with most companies. A medical biller and coder works with the patient and many insurance companies to file claims. “The biller will submit and follow up on any claims in order to receive payment for services rendered by the health care provider. This usually involves learning many codes, each one representing a symptom, medications and diagnoses, in order to process the claim properly” (“Medical Billing Career”). Because there are so many different codes that you need to learn education is necessary for success. …show more content…
“While the lack of skilled medical billing and coding professionals currently working makes it more likely that an individual with an Associate’s degree can obtain a high paying position, earning a Bachelor’s degree in the field will guarantee more lucrative employment overall” (“Medical Billing and Coding”). Salary varies from state to state and by how much education and experience you have. Coders earn on average of $25,000 to $60,000 a year. “According to AAPC, certified coders earn 21% more than non-certified coders” (Santiago, 2015). Most jobs that post on-line do not specifically give the hourly wage until you have had an interview. This is where benefits are also discussed. Benefits are important especially if you have a family. The cost of health insurance alone is expensive, so obtaining a position with a company that contributes to the cost is essential. This particular job is full time and is offered

Evaluating Compliance Strategies

...Evaluation Compliance Strategies Medical Billing and coding compliance is very important to the billing world. Billing management starts at the first patient contact and ends only when the account has been paid in full. . In between, there are a series of important steps, each of which is critical for accurate billing and proper reimbursement. In this essay we are going to discuss the importance of the linkage code, implications of incorrect medical coding, and how physicians and payers fee are related to the billing compliance. We are also going to discuss what steps we can take to meet the compliance standards. When claims are filed correctly they will show the connection between the service being billed and the diagnosis code. The linkage code helps determine which procedure goes with which diagnosis code. If the linkage codes are not correct this will cause the claim to be denied. Linkage codes help the payer to determine the medical necessity for the service provided. Payers will determine the coverage by medical necessity. Services that are considered to be of nonmedical necessity are not covered under an insurance policy. It is important that the billing specialist be aware that different payers will have their own set of medical necessity edits. The implications of incorrect medical coding can cause issues for both the medical provider and the patient. Coding incorrectly can cause denial of claims. Providers would lose their patients trust, causing them to...

I was born and raised in the mountains of Colorado. I grew up riding horses and rodeoing. I moved to Alaska four years ago where I met my wonderful fiancé. I love spending time at the beach watching wildlife, finding seashells and beach glass. We spend lots of family time swimming and playing outdoors. Having kids at such a young age made it hard for me to complete high school. I have been a stay home mom off and on for many years. I have recently completed my GED within four months of taking my first test and scored very high in all of my testing. My expectations of this workshop are to learn how to proficiently use Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point so that I can make sure the assignments that I come across are done correctly. I used these programs during school, but I have been out of school for so long that I am pretty rusty in this area. So I am very excited for this workshop. My career goals are to complete my Associates in Medical Billing and Coding in the next two years. I would like to better myself and my education so that I can get a decent paying job and I can become a better role model for my children. Nurse vs Dr

...Jocelyn Seawood Nurses vs. Doctor English Composition 121 Kathy Knecht 10/17/2011 Nurses vs. Doctors In the field of healthcare there has been a long time ongoing discussion about which healthcare profession plays the most important role in the healthcare industry. If you were to ask the nurses the nurses would say that there will be no good healthcare without great nurses. The doctors would say that the doctors are the brains and the strength of the healthcare world. Those who work outside of the medical industry often confuse the roles of doctor and nurse, not aware that the two have very different functions. Although the two work side-by-side in many situations and need each other to complete certain tasks, there are major differences between a doctor and nurse. Both roles, however, are essential for the medical industry and of equal importance. In this essay I will objectively compare and contrast the role of the doctors and the role of the nurses, and maybe this will give more insight on who’s who in the healthcare industry. Doctors and nurses first differ in their job descriptions. In most cases, the doctor is tasked with examining and diagnosing patients. A nurse, on the other hand, will have a more hands-on role with physically treating a patient based on the doctor's diagnosis. Nurses often joke that they are just as knowledgeable, yet are paid less and charged with performing the "dirty work". However, both jobs can be physically and emotionally demanding. It...

...ork2012 - 2013 Catalog A Message from the President “Sullivan University is truly a unique and student success focused institution.” I have shared that statement with numerous groups and it simply summarizes my basic philosophy of what Sullivan is all about. When I say that Sullivan is “student success focused,” I feel as President that I owe a definition of this statement to all who are considering Sullivan University. First, Sullivan is unique among institutions of higher education with its innovative, career-first curriculum. You can earn a career diploma or certificate in a year or less and then accept employment while still being able to complete your associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree by attending during the day, evenings, weekends, or online. Business and industry do not expand or hire new employees only in May or June each year. Yet most institutions of higher education operate on a nine-month school year with almost everyone graduating in May. We remained focused on your success and education, and continue to offer our students the opportunity to begin classes or to graduate four times a year with our flexible, year-round full-time schedule of classes. If you really want to attend a school where your needs (your real needs) come first, consider Sullivan University. I believe we can help you exceed your expectations. Since words cannot fully describe the atmosphere at Sullivan University, please accept my personal invitation to visit and experience...

...health insurance reforms To explore developments associated with the corporatization of health care To speculate on whether the era of socialized medicine has dawned in the United States “Where’s the market?” 81 26501_CH03_FINAL.indd 81 7/27/11 10:31:29 AM 82 CHAPTER 3 The Evolution of Health Services in the United States Introduction The health care delivery system of the United States evolved quite differently from the systems in Europe. American values and the social, political, and economic antecedents on which the US system is based have led to the formation of a unique system of health care delivery, as described in Chapter 1. This chapter discusses how these forces have been instrumental in shaping the current structure of medical services and how they are likely to shape its future. The evolutionary changes discussed here illustrate the American beliefs and values (discussed in Chapter 2) in action, within the context of broad social, political, and economic changes. Because social, political, and economic contexts are not static, their shifting influences lend a certain dynamism to the health care delivery system. Conversely, beliefs and values remain relatively stable over time. Consequently, in the American health care delivery experience, initiatives toward a national health care program have failed to make significant inroads. However, social, political, and economic forces have led to certain compromises, as seen in the creation of Medicare, Medicaid, and other...

Why There Still so Many Jobs

...Journal of Economic Perspectives—Volume 29, Number 3—Summer 2015—Pages 3–30 Why Are There Still So Many Jobs? The History and Future of Workplace Automation† David H. Autor T here have been periodic warnings in the last two centuries that automation and new technology were going to wipe out large numbers of middle class jobs. The best-known early example is the Luddite movement of the early 19th century, in which a group of English textile artisans protested the automation of textile production by seeking to destroy some of the machines. A lesser-known but more recent example is the concern over “The Automation Jobless,” as they were called in the title of a TIME magazine story of February 24, 1961: The number of jobs lost to more efficient machines is only part of the problem. What worries many job experts more is that automation may prevent the economy from creating enough new jobs. . . . Throughout industry, the trend has been to bigger production with a smaller work force. . . . Many of the losses in factory jobs have been countered by an increase in the service industries or in office jobs. But automation is beginning to move in and eliminate office jobs too. . . . In the past, new industries hired far more people than those they put out of business. But this is not true of many of today’s new industries. . . . Today’s new industries have comparatively few jobs for the unskilled or semiskilled, just the class of workers whose jobs are being eliminated...
