...Returning to college is a big step for adult learners. There are so many obstacles that impair the adult learners. There are family, full time employment and other related activities. There are a lot of time and effort put into the adult learner’s decision to return to school. Even the most brilliant students will find it difficult to return to school due to the lack of self confidence in the ability to comprehend the learning styles of the teacher. Many times the teaching style is new or different to the adult learners because so much time has passed since they were in the classroom. Adult learners learn best by self-directing with their own learning techniques (Clapper, 2010). The adult learners have many life experiences that can be applied in the classroom. Most often the adult learner learns best by hand on situations, by life experiences, current and former employment. Educators find it difficult to teach some adult learners because they have their own way of wanting to be taught. When learning in the health care profession, educators are constantly looking for ways to help the adult learner grasp the coursework. The adult learners have acquired talents in their former employments. The adult learners are sure of the health care profession when they choose to go back to school. Educators have developed Simulation Centers to help the adult learners appreciate going back to school (Knowles, 1984) Educators realize that the adult learners learn in...

...Econ 545 March 24, 2014 In today’s economy, it is common to see young adults wonder what their career prospects will be like once they enter the workforce. This is the case with my cousin, Jenny. Jenny is a bright high school senior who is interested in making a smart investment into her future career path. Currently, Jenny is interested in exploring a career as a doctor. Since she knows I am currently taking this course in Economics, she is interested in learning how economic principles could play a role in her potential career path. In order to better help Jenny, I have conducted some research to help her make an informed decision. Over this course of this paper, I will explore several economic facets to help make sense of the data about this profession including the supply and demand, elasticity, costs of production, pricing, and economic or normal profit or loss. My goal is to better educate myself on these basic microeconomic concepts while providing Jenny with valuable data! To begin, the discussion will focus on what the demand for doctors looks like. I found an interesting article that focuses on the shortage of available physicians in the United States. This article paints a startling picture of how the demand for physicians will continue to grow over the next decade, as the available supply of physicians remains far less than the demand. Below is an interesting trend graph that this article presented. The article also goes on to discuss how the recently implemented...

...Science has come a long way in the world we live in. From not having medicines to having many different forms, from large amounts of the human population being lost to sickness to that sickness being avoided. The use of vaccinations is one way in which medical science has come a long way. Vaccines are used to try to provide an immunity against diseases and to act as an antigen. Vaccines are responsible for many successes such as the decrease in diseases such as Polio, however vaccines are also responsible for failures and cause much protest within our communities. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends getting 28 doses of 10 vaccines for kids aged 0 to six (“Should Any Vaccines”). However, No US federal laws exist that makes vaccinations...

...known Mrs. Laroda for six years and we meet when I was working as a medical office assistant at her gynaecologist office. I decided to ask Mrs. Laroda to be my interviewee for this project because she is fifty-eight years old and the assignment required me to interview a person between the ages of fifty to sixty five. Prior to asking her, I had asked several persons but they declined because they did not want to or did not have the time to be interviewed. However, when I asked Mrs. Laroda she accepted with no hesitations. In addition, she is a very open, talkative and lively person and since this project required me spending several hours interviewing someone I wanted that person not to be uninteresting and willing to answer personal questions. The interview took three hours not because it was difficult interviewing her or because she had problems understanding the survey questions but because she is a talkative person. As a result, I found that we would start discussing topics unrelated to this assignment. During the interview I asked her questions regarding her beliefs, family and social life, and concerns about aging and entering retirement. Interview Questions 1. How did you meet your spouse? 2. Where do you work and how long have you worked there? 3. What are your recreational activities? 4. How do you want to spend your retirement? 5. Do you have any other means of income? 6. Do you have medical insurance? 7. What are your views on dying and the common health problems...

...the knowledge, support, and comfort of an RN – they are a large, diverse group who are integral to and in the delivery of healthcare. In fact, the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) Job Satisfaction 2010 survey indicates that nursing is the only “profession offering genuine opportunity for meaningful work.” The Employment Projections 2010-2020 profile suggests that there are 3.5 million licensed RNs working in various settings across the United States - which effectively means that RNs represents the single largest group of healthcare professionals in the United States; Wanted Analytics reported in December 2012 of 121,000 newly placed classified advertisements seeking RNs to fill positions in various settings to include schools, hospitals, long-term care facilities, companies, and staffing firms during the months of October and November 2012; and the National Institute of Medicine confirms that between 2005 and 2012 the nursing sector experienced average annual growth of twenty-three percent (23%), and further predicts that the sector will add an additional 283,000 positions by the end of calendar year 2015. Despite rosy and extremely optimistic employment prospects, the US is in the midst of a nursing shortage as illustrated by the following: The summary of the 2010 US Census indicates that the demographic of citizens born between 1946 and 1964...

...for relief and opportunity. The United States is currently experiencing a new wave of immigration; namely Latinos. Many of whom are migrating to escape the dangers of their homeland. Others are migrating to move beyond the political chaos and economic deprivation of their countries in hopes of having an opportunity at the American Dream and all of its promises. It can be agreed that immigrants come to the United States for the betterment of themselves and their families. However, their dreams are often shattered by the obstacles of gaining residency and citizenship no matter the length of the time they have resided in the United States. While immigrants are the foundation of our nation, immigration regulations were put into place in the 1700’s and has undergone changes throughout the years. Over the past several decades, there has been an emphasis on immigrants’ impact on our economy. In our current state combined with the vast amount of illegal immigrants entering and residing in the United States, immigration and immigrants are significant to America’s success. Our country’s international stature is dependent upon the advancements we make to enhance the lives of our young immigrant population; by considering our academic and employment opportunities through their status as residents. With the Latino population expected to become the majority of the United State population, it is a significant time to continue pushing for advancements in immigration reform and provide opportunities...

...College Costs Introduction It's no secret that financing a college education is getting tougher. College costs have skyrocketed over the past decade or so, and there's no relief in sight. Average tuition at four-year colleges will increase 7 percent this school year, double the rate of inflation. Student aid is not increasing fast enough to plug the growing gap between tuition and family finances. In addition, there is a growing number of older students entering college today. These students have families that they need to support. I know, because I am a family man who has returned to school. I wish to finish my degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The only problems I face are financial in nature. It is with this in mind that I set about this research. The not so simple question: Is financial aid available to older students, and if so, how do they go about obtaining it? The Cost Of Education The cost of higher education varies by type of institution. Tuition is highest at private 4-year institutions, and lowest at public 2-year institutions. The private 4-year colleges nearly quadrupled their average tuition rates between 1975 and 1996. For private 4-year colleges, tuition and fees for the 1995-96 academic year averaged about $15,400, compared with about $5006 at public 4-year colleges. The cost of attending an institution of higher education includes not only tuition and fees, however, but also books and supplies, transportation...

Poverty is seen as a relative concept, and the view is taken that we should not be considering one South African poverty problem, but rather strategies for developing the metropolitan, urban and rural poor households. The households have been further grouped into quintiles according to their incomes. In my quest to answer how likely trends are going to change, I will give an analysis of a broad range of transport issues. For example; the overall amount of travel; travel purpose; public transport accessibility, affordability and attitudes of customers; vehicle ownership; accessibility to shopping, education and medical facilities. The first issue that is apparent and seem to emerge from analysis is the difference between the rural and metro/urban poverty experiences. Secondly, there is an...

...men determined to maintain a strangle hold on the legal profession, and women struggling to enter the professions. One of the most dramatic changes in the legal profession in recent years has been the influx of women. In many countries women now constitute close to half of all law students, although it will be the turn of the century before this representation is fully mirrored among practitioners. In this paper, we make an analysis of the barriers to gender equality between first and third world countries. We try understand the reason why there is a gender gap in the legal establishment in countries such as the United States of America, Canada and Australia, entry into the so-called-learned profession has been a march in developed countries with very low or limited discrimination as compared to the third world country of Botswana. INTRODUCTION Barriers to women’s entry into the legal profession seem to have disappeared. Over the past decade the number of women graduating from law school and practicing law has grown enormously in most industrialized, Western including the African continent societies. Despite women graduating from law schools in significant numbers, they continue to lag behind in the most prestigious positions in the legal fraternity. The law profession is historically a male dominated profession in the western countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States of America. However, in Botswana,...

...level of literacy that would enable them to register to vote. This strategy was led by Stephen Currier and his wife, Audrey Bruce, the granddaughter of Andrew Mellon, during the early 1960s. Their Taconic Foundation brought the leading civil rights groups together with other foundations including the Stern, Rockefeller, and Norman foundations. The funding to civil rights advocacy associations was matched with volunteers throughout the South who tutored prospective voters in literacy and then sent them back to their own communities to teach others. The Currier’s Taconic Foundation also funded a program in Harlem that had been developed at New York University. The goal was teaching disadvantaged children concepts and skills needed for school, while developing motivation and self-confidence. It was possibly the first project to focus on...

...parental incarceration. The entire matching process, from the initial screening to the final pairing and beyond, is made possible by donators and community members’ financial support. Every local BBBS agency is a nonprofit organization with its own audited financial statement. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a program I have worked with since my sophomore year of high school where during that time, I was matched to a 6-year-old girl. Since then, I have learned so much about the community. Initially, I was informed that the children who were involved with the program were “less fortunate.” However, if I learned anything from being at BBBS, it is that each and every one the “Littles” has the potential to achieve anything they set their mind to. Many of the kids have moved from town to town and switched schools many times, but it didn’t stop them from doing well academically or participating in activities they truly enjoy, such as football and cheerleading. I remember my previous “Little” was not a big fan of school, but as time went by, she found a subject she truly enjoyed, English, and stuck with it. Now she loves school and actively reads for her own pleasure. These children may come from an economic disadvantage or a single family home, but it certainly does not make them less fortunate. If anything, I believe these qualities will make them stronger, and with a little guidance from their “Bigs,” there is no doubt they will have a bright future ahead of them. During my field...
